UPDATE: Candles blamed for 2-alarm house fire in 8000 block of Fauntleroy Way SW, 2 people taken to hospital

(TOPLINES: Fire under investigation. 2 men in hospital. Metro back to regular routing on Fauntleroy)

(WSB photo, added 7:17 am)
6:58 AM: Seattle Fire has a house-fire response on the way to the 8000 block of Fauntleroy Way SW, which is across the street from Lincoln Park. SDOT says Fauntleroy is closed at Monroe, and a traffic cam shows black smoke from blocks away. At least one person is reported to need medical attention. More to come.

7:06 AM: SFD is sending more engines and also notifying Metro it will need to reroute lines that use Fauntleroy in the area.

(This photo and next, by Kam Junejo)
7:17 AM: One person is reported to be on the way to Harborview via SFD medic unit; another medic unit radioed that another person in need of medical attention “just walked up” to their unit at the scene and was “in the fire room.” Our crew on scene says flames are still visible from the second floor.

7:24 AM: SFD is sending a second alarm, so you’ll see/hear more emergency vehicles. Traffic-wise, there is absolutely no access to the Fauntleroy ferry dock from the north – if you have to get there, approach from the south – 35th to Barton, then west on Barton (which becomes California past the schoolhouse and then Wildwood in the Endolyne area) to Fauntleroy. Ideally, avoid the area TFN. P.S. At least one TV helicopter is now overhead.

(WSB photos from this point down)
7:31 AM: This is still a full-on firefight. The house, according to public records, is 106 years old. SFD says the person taken to the hospital is a man in critical condition, suffering from smoke inhalation.

7:50 AM: We’re adding photos from an upslope neighbor showing the extent of the flames. SFD’s Lt. Sue Stangl has just spoken to media on scene; our crew says she told them that multiple neighbors called the fire in. Five people were in the house, all got out, but as we’ve reported above, one man was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. Fire is still not out.

(WSB photo)
One dog was rescued, one other pet’s status is not known. We’ll add video of her briefing when our crew returns to HQ.

8:12 AM: SFD reports the fire is “knocked down” – that still doesn’t mean out, but it’s progress. We also asked Lt. Stangl about whether there was a water-supply problem – one firefighter was heard via radio that they were “out of water,” and lines subsequently were rolled blocks further south, but Stangl says that they had water on the fire from the start and that might just have involved the backup line; they’ll be checking.

8:35 AM: Firefighters are now calling the fire “tapped” – another milestone toward being out – and scaling down operations a bit.

8:50 AM: Crews at the scene say they’re expecting to have one lane of Fauntleroy Way open within a few minutes. Washington State Ferries’ advisory says that “traffic is temporarily single-lane offloading and is being directed to the south when exiting the Fauntleroy terminal.”

9:13 AM: Fauntleroy Way has reopened and Metro says buses are back on their regular routing in the area.

9:52 AM: Two men are in the hospital – in addition to the one in critical condition, the other has a “minor burn to the leg,” per SFD, which still has several units at the scene. Meantime, the ferry terminal is back to normal offloading.

10:29 AM: Continuing to await word on the cause. Here’s what the front of the house looked like as of a short time ago:

As discussed in comments, neighbors say the house has a troubled past. What we’ve found so far are multiple complaints to the city regarding junk storage, inoperable cars, and a dormer built without a permit; the online file shows that case was referred to the City Attorney’s Office last year.

11:54 AM: SFD has just announced that the fire was caused by “unattended candles on the main floor.” It also says a neighbor’s house was damaged.

God dang the sirens woke me up!

  • aeuropeantouch April 10, 2015 (7:05 am)

I live on Morgan Junction facing west… big cloud visible and fire smell… I hope everybody got out in time…

  • cj April 10, 2015 (7:07 am)

I live near the park on Fauntleroy. Fire response woke me up and has been going on for a while now. Many ambulances and fire trucks!

  • jSky April 10, 2015 (7:08 am)

Woke me up too and wsb was the first place i came to find out what was going on. Thanks for the quick reporting.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (7:10 am)

We’re just upslope from there and I heard the sirens before we got any other notification. This is definitely a full-blown house fire, listening to the logistics firefighters are communicating via radio – we’ll be on scene shortly.

  • linda April 10, 2015 (7:11 am)

Live up above..can hear fire from here..sent you some video

  • HP April 10, 2015 (7:14 am)

Ambulances racing the other direction now.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (7:23 am)

re: the other direction, HP, that’s because they’re accessing via Barton – a couple went past us eastbound on Thistle – clearly headed to access from the south, 35th to Barton to Wildwood to Fauntleroy at the ferry terminal. If you have to access a ferry, don’t even TRY from Fauntleroy southbound – go to Barton. – TR

Very smoky in Morgan Junction…I hope everyone is okay!

  • cj April 10, 2015 (7:17 am)

K even though I am just on the N edge of the park and facing north I can now see and smell the smoke. Getting a little creepy over here :/

  • Heather April 10, 2015 (7:17 am)

Can smell the fire from my place, Fauntleroy & Graham. Now seeing the smoke from my deck too. Praying for all.

  • Danette April 10, 2015 (7:18 am)

You can definitely see the smoke from the the Alaskan Way viaduct. I hope everyone is okay.

  • Kevin April 10, 2015 (7:20 am)

It’s certainly busy there. Currently trapped on a metro bus that headed down this way before the news came through, with no reroute options. Happy Friday!

  • Colby April 10, 2015 (7:21 am)

This house I believe, or at least has appeared to be under a remodel for the past couple years.

  • Jeff April 10, 2015 (7:22 am)

I live on Fauntleroy and so far at least 8 fire trucks, heavy rescue rig, mutable police and fire chief vehicles, and two of the large extended trucks have gone by my house. I saw two ambulance leaving the scene with lights and sirens and now TV crews are in route.
    This is the real deal.

  • cj April 10, 2015 (7:28 am)

Incoming helicopter. Had to close my apartment up the smell smoke is getting thicker. Just now another engine incoming. I hope there is no threat to the gas station next door.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (7:35 am)

This isn’t next door to the gas station. It’s a couple blocks south and on the other side of the street. I’ve confirmed via Parcel Viewer that the address on the SFD log is correct, 8022 Fauntleroy, which puts it on the east side of the Fauntleroy.

  • Kay April 10, 2015 (7:34 am)

What is happening with C line? No metro alerts yet!

  • Avalon Way Resident April 10, 2015 (7:35 am)

I smelled smoke and heard sirens going past as I was taking my dog out – I’m at 35th and Avalon. Do you think that is for the same thing, or something else? If it is, that is a bad house fire. Sorry for the people involved.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (7:38 am)

Avalon Way Res – When there is a major fire, some of the units come from across the bridge, as well as from the fire stations all over West Seattle (including 29 and 36, both north of you). So yes.

  • trevor April 10, 2015 (7:37 am)

Any word on bus service? Doesn’t seem like any C lines are getting through.

  • evergreen April 10, 2015 (7:39 am)

Praying the residents come out of this OK.

  • Michael M April 10, 2015 (7:39 am)

More fire trucks going by, Fauntleroy & Graham, including Command Unit.

  • Dave April 10, 2015 (7:42 am)

I think that is the house that always has clutter stored on the second floor balcony. I’ve wondered for years what was going on there.

  • miws April 10, 2015 (7:42 am)

Kay, you may have received this since you commented, it came into my Inbox at 7:29 am. But just in case not, here is the reroute info from the Metro Alert:

Routes 116, 118, 119 and the RapidRide C line are currently rerouted in both directions due to a blockage on Fauntleroy Way SW near SW Monroe St. These buses will be travelling instead via 35th Av SW, SW Thistle St and California Av SW in both directions, making all posted stops along this alternate route.

    Your patience is appreciated.

Thank you for riding and for using Metro’s services.

    .

Firetrucks are still zooming down there, C Line buses have been instructed to turn around and go down 35th. If you have a stop by Endolyne Joes or just past it, you may not see your bus for awhile

  • Paul B April 10, 2015 (7:50 am)

The C has been rerouted to Thistle and over to California.

  • DV April 10, 2015 (8:01 am)

I hope everyone and their pets are ok but this house has always seemed a little sketchy. For the neighbors sake, I hope its not a hazmat situation.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (8:06 am)

DV – The DPD file shows numerous reports for junk storage but there is no way at this point to know who was responsible and what if any of that is related to this, and we have at least one person in bad shape, so I request that we hold off on the backstory for now – if anyone has information that might be helpful to investigators, I’m sure SFD will want to hear it. At this point, though an SFD spokesperson has spoken to us and other media, there’s absolutely NO information on the cause – they don’t even have the fire out yet. Thanks. – TR

  • Laura April 10, 2015 (8:02 am)

Very scary. Hope all are okay.

  • MindDrive April 10, 2015 (8:03 am)

R.R.C buses getting through now from Morgan Jct. Still no sign of 116/118/119. Those might’ve gone express to downtown from the ferry.

  • steve April 10, 2015 (8:17 am)

You can smell the smoke up on 35th also, I thought someone was burning trash.

  • Clark Beck April 10, 2015 (8:24 am)

View from across Fauntleroy looking northeast. There is a dormer on the south slope of the roof. The firemen are below the dormer cutting into the first floor. Smoke was still coming from the dormer at the time I viewed the area, 0810 hours.

  • Lori April 10, 2015 (8:27 am)

Live very nearby and dealing with the re-directed traffic to our dead end streets. :/ Curious to hear what caused the fire. Hope everyone comes away ok.

  • Mary S April 10, 2015 (8:37 am)

Could smell this at Alaska and Fauntleroy, but not now. Hope everyone involved is okay, including the animals.

  • Jennhx April 10, 2015 (8:42 am)

Not one single C line bus came to Morgan junction from 7 am to 8 am. I’m sorry for everyone involved, but it seems like yet another failure on Metro’s part that not one of 7 busses scheduled could just take a re-route effectively.

  • Wsrez April 10, 2015 (9:05 am)

While it’s frustrating to endure the pain of being stuck on a bus with lack of re-route, consider how much worse it might be if your house burnt to the ground at 7am this Friday morning. I’m amazed at the lack of empathy and compassion our community is showing. I hope you got to work on time but more importantly I hope the family that lost everything are ok. Sending positive vibes.

  • Jennhx April 10, 2015 (9:14 am)

There is so much compassion here, absolutely. I wish them all well. And there is neighborliness too. I saw multiple solo-driver cars stopping at bus stops to give some people rides. So nice of people.

To me, that is a separate issue from whether a single house fire should keep busses from being able to do a re-route. I hope Metro bus drivers are trained for how to deal with this kind of scenario, but it doesn’t seem like they are. I don’t think wondering about our system’s flexibility makes me any less compassionate.

  • Marnie April 10, 2015 (9:17 am)

What a horrible thing. Hoping that everyone is ok (waiting to hear about the person at HMC and the second pet!)

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (9:21 am)

If you’re following comments but not the main story – Metro is back to regular routing. At least one lane is open; we’re going downhill shortly to try to clarify if it’s just one, or if traffic is going both ways with use of the curb lane alongside the park. Still no determination of the fire’s cause.

  • lives near junkie house April 10, 2015 (9:23 am)

Its worth mentioning that this house has been a nuisance property for a long time. Drugs, prostitution, etc. I suspect some clown falling asleep with a joint in their hand. We’ve been joking about when, not if, this place was going to go up in flames for a while.
    .
If it survives, drive slowly past it next time you’re in the neighborhood. There is usually a drug addict or 2 passes out in a car out front and some insane DIYJ (do it yourself junkie) construction happening on the outrageous front facade. Their 2nd floor is a daily source of amusement, they pile the contents of a bedroom onto an outside loft like a hay bale of laundry and scrap wood, and the next day it’s gone.

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (9:40 am)

We’re looking into the house’s history. So far most of what we have found involves complaints to DPD such as outdoor junk storage, inoperable vehicles, and that a dormer was added without a permit on record. Looking up crime reports is more difficult because SPD records block the last two digits, and the 80XX Fauntleroy address is also what shows for Lincoln Park, across the street. – TR

  • Linoln Park Res April 10, 2015 (9:33 am)

    Jennhx,
This part of Fauntleroy is a bottleneck with no side streets to escape the road closure. So I saw six Southbound buses waiting to turn around and they are using our small side street to do it. Must be just as many Northbound that can’t turn around either. My car barely fits down our street somedays and Metro is now using it. Watched two articulated buses already make this shoe horn manuever. Sorry that you were inconvenienced, but KUDOS to the metro drivers who are using this reroute and not hitting any cars.

  • flimflam April 10, 2015 (9:57 am)

an out of control fire is truly a frightening thing. I lived in belltown years ago when the Speakeasy (2nd and bell) caught fire. I left my apartment to take a look and was shocked at the heat produced – you could fell it a block away.

    .
anyway, that thought has me wondering why anyone would need to assume the cause of the fire – especially in disparaging tones.

    .
hope the injured are ok and that all animals made it out.

  • Josh B. April 10, 2015 (9:59 am)

To “lives near junkie house”, do you have proof of said drugs and prostitution? Are there records with the SPD of this? If not, then I would recommend to withhold judgement at the time. I live nearby and it would be easy to assume what you say, but these are people who just had their house burn down and at least one possibly injured.

On another note to WSB, I happened to be walking by the house around 9:30pm last night and noticed what sounded like an engine or possibly generator running inside the house somewhere. The garage door was closed, front porch dark. It’s possible all the lights were off in the house, maybe power turned off? Do you have a contact for SFD if this information would help in determining cause?

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (10:12 am)

Josh, fire investigations are handled by the Fire Marshal (who is or at least was at the scene at some point) and the SFD website lists their number as 206-386-1450, so please call them and refer to the 8022 Fauntleroy Way fire. The DPD file link I included in an earlier comment had something about an electric meter being removed – but that was 10 years ago.
      .
Regarding the other point … several people have brought this up in various venues and I felt we had to note that we are looking into it, but in the meantime, we now know two people are in the hospital, and a house is gutted, and that is the heart of what’s happened here, regardless of history. I hope that if it was a nuisance house, that someone was working with the Community Police Team and Precinct Liaison about it. I have only found one specific report with this address, a suspected theft case a few years back, but again, files are hard to search because of redaction of addresses – TR

  • G April 10, 2015 (10:40 am)

This is dangerous territory, people, when we start probing the history of the house and tenants. Let’s keep it at good wishes and prayers, for this is of concern only to immediate neighbors, and people who’s routines might be affected. At least wait a respectful amount of time before launching your inquisitions.

  • Josh B. April 10, 2015 (10:44 am)

Thanks for the information. I will give a call just to pass the info along in the hopes it might be useful.

  • Apey April 10, 2015 (10:45 am)

Kiro reported pretty early on that the fire was caused by a candle. Has there been any verification of this?

    • WSB April 10, 2015 (11:00 am)

Candles certainly are to blame in far too many house fires but our crew says that was a *rumor* going around on the sidewalk. We heard it too but we don’t report rumors without confirmation. I see it on their website without attribution (neighbors? person who got out of the house? or?). SFD couldn’t even get an investigator inside for a long time. When they announce what investigators have determined to be the cause, we’ll update the story. – TR

      • WSB April 10, 2015 (11:52 am)

In this case, the rumor was true, SFD says ‘unattended candles on main floor.’

  • Neighbor April 10, 2015 (11:02 am)

They were stealing electricity from a neighbors house! Bad news!

  • ca April 10, 2015 (11:18 am)

shame on you people! so what the historys house or better…accusations. Someone home burnt down, 2 people are in bad shape in the hospital. What ever happen to some compassion. Thank you WSB for all the updates.

  • C Swazey April 10, 2015 (12:37 pm)

Because people also want to know why it happened.
    There’s nothing wrong with that.

  • TK April 10, 2015 (1:06 pm)

Is anyone experiencing a lack of water in their building? I’m on 35th and Snoqualmie and we have no water in the building.. wondering if its the construction next door or if they needed more water to fight the fire..

    I wonder whats up..

  • tacitus April 10, 2015 (1:13 pm)

I like WSB, but I have to admit that I am definitely weary of the “looky-loo” aspect of the coverage of these types of events. It really just feeds supposition in the comments. You all need to chill out, because (1), unless you are a neighbor or know these people, it really isn’t any of your business and (2) specualtion as to someone’s criminal activity, unless proven in a court of law, is potentially libelous.

  • WS RES April 10, 2015 (1:14 pm)

I am absolutely appalled at the rude comments. Someone’s house burnt down and got hurt. Who cares how they live. I pray for those affected.

  • Joe dion April 10, 2015 (2:05 pm)

Dear “lives near junkie house”. I am a Seattle firefighter… I was one of the FOS (FIRST ON SCENE) EARLY this morning. Your comments are disputable… At best. These are human beings.. Perhaps your son, daughter, brother……suggest you do some internal evaluating to see just how perfect you REALLY are…..I suspect not. We ALL have issues and when I enter a burning building I really don’t care what your past is all about…. Hope you think strongly about this at your time of need.

  • JC April 10, 2015 (2:41 pm)

Joe Dion, well said! And I thank you for what you do out there!

  • WestSeattleMom April 10, 2015 (3:36 pm)

At 6:50am I drove by the home and noticed a lady on the sidewalk who appeared to be taking pictures of the home or garden. When I got closer I saw she was talking w another lady standing on the second tier of the rockery. This was just before the fire broke out I guess. Hope they were both okay.

  • C Swazey April 10, 2015 (7:26 pm)

Of course people’s first and foremost concern should be for the residents of that home.

But if there’s been safety issues then neighbors will want to know. For one thing, a neighboring house was also affected.

  • Kc April 10, 2015 (8:13 pm)

    Joe Dion,
Thank you for your service! Your comment is spot on!
Thank you to all the fire fighters and police officers that see things that most of us can not even imagine and serve with out judgment
Thank you for having the courage to ” run in to danger to save a life of a stranger when most of us only have the courage to run out”

Thank you on behalf of most citizens of the great city of Seattle, we all should sleep a little easier knowing you are just a phone call away and 4 mins to the front door should the need arise ready to help regardless of what may or may not be known about us
    Be safe out there!!
    Thanks again!!

  • Anne Pinney April 10, 2015 (8:46 pm)

Dear Firefighters, your work is tough, and challenging, and without you we would be much worse off. Thank you for your consistent help.I cannot dream of a city, town, or place without fire fighting ability. Well, I

  • thewellington April 11, 2015 (2:40 pm)

There are still fire trucks at this house more than 24 hours after the fire…. Wonder what that is about. Why so long after? Can this thing relight?

    • WSB April 11, 2015 (4:09 pm)

When there is a significant fire, SFD often does station an engine at the scene for a day or two later on ‘fire watch.’ We have noticed more of this since a fire in Arbor Heights a year or so ago that flared up a couple times.

      • WSB April 11, 2015 (4:25 pm)

… you’ll also notice them rotating the “on watch” engine every few hours. Just heard a dispatch right this moment (4:25 pm) to swap in Engine 32 (from The Junction) for whichever engine has been on watch up until now. Drove by a little while ago and noted the yellow tape is still up around the house.

  • Grace Thomas April 11, 2015 (8:11 pm)

  • mandy ginsberg April 14, 2015 (12:00 am)

That house was beautiful, and any allegations of drugs or prostitution, are untrue and sad. any real issues along these lines, occurred long ago when it was a rental. since owner took control, no issues other than a permit. I have seen the transition personally, and have also been inside recently. so nice…The long time remodel, was finally near completion, and was realistically worth 6 to $700,000 easily. As u can see the outside, including cedar shake, and landscaping, were added, and the home was to be sold late summer. owner lost half a million plus in contents, and $300,000+ in damages. Plus a treasured dog of 9 years. All that can be said, is shame on you heartless, gossip laiden, haters…

  • So Soi April 18, 2015 (11:20 pm)

This is very sad. I’m very sorry for those left without a place to live, those who are injured and pets that were lost. That being said, those who live in the neighborhood know the real story. This home and those who live there (a rotating populace) have been problematic for years. While this doesn’t take away from the grief, the truth of the situation does need to be recognized. If you want to know WSB, ask the neighbors who have dealt with the constant problems.

Sorry, comment time is over.
