Alki Surf Shop: Aloha, new West Seattle Blog sponsor!

Just in time for your local holiday shopping, we’re welcoming Alki Surf Shop to the WSB sponsor team. Here’s what they’d like you to know:

Ever since Alki Surf Shop opened, people have been asking, “What’s a surf shop doing at Alki Beach?” The standard answer is, “No waves, no worries.”* But there’s more to the story than that.

The owners, Kahuna Dave and Terri Nakamura, are both from Seattle. Terri grew up on Beacon Hill and Dave claims to hail from “the ancient Hawaiian kingdom of Burien.” Longtime veterans of the Seattle graphic design and advertising industry, they wanted to use their skills to launch a local business of their own – something fun. And what could be more fun than a surf shop, right in the heart of Seattle’s favorite beach?

Alki Surf Shop is a dream come true for us,” Terri says. “We’ve been able to create a unique, inviting experience to add to the Alki Beach neighborhood in West Seattle. People come in and say, ‘Wow, what a cute shop. How long have you been open?’”

The shop features their exclusive Genuine Alki brand tops, designed and produced in Seattle. A great selection of Alki gifts, including mugs, shot glasses, totes, cards, and wall art. Beach essentials, such as sunglasses, volleyballs and kites. Plus jewelry and cool new gifts for the holidays.

Kahuna Dave also wrote “The Alki Beach Song” and produced a short music video to go with it, which can be seen on YouTube:

It’s all part of the fun at one of West Seattle’s newest businesses, located at 2622 Alki Avenue SW (between Homefront Smoothies and Alki Beach Miniatures.) If you hear the sound of someone blowing a conch shell, you know you’re getting close. At the Alki Surf Shop, that’s how they say mahalo!

Alki Surf Shop can be found at alkisurfshop.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/alkisurfshop. Or join them for a holiday Tweetup by following them at twitter.com/alkisurfshop.

We thank Alki Surf Shop for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

  • i don't get it December 4, 2014 (6:43 pm)

So, it’s a surf shop with a touch of a Hawaiian theme, that doesn’t actually sell or rent surf gear?

  • morgan December 4, 2014 (8:53 pm)

I’ll be buying. Stuff is sick.

  • annaeileen December 4, 2014 (9:34 pm)

  • Meg December 4, 2014 (9:45 pm)

Absolutely love it- Great place for unique, fun gifts! They have something for everyone!

  • Kahuna Dave December 4, 2014 (9:52 pm)

Ever since we opened, we noticed that West Seattle people are different. Friendlier and more easy going than in other parts of Seattle. We love being part of the Alki Beach community and are honored to be part of the WSB sponsor team.

Paddleboard rentals would be good. $$
Cheaper for West Seattle drivers licenses
    1/2 off.

  • chusaca December 4, 2014 (10:20 pm)

I don’t get it either. But I like it.

  • Terri Nakamura December 4, 2014 (11:03 pm)

Guys, thank you for enhancing our contribution. Especially love the Easter egg (“No waves except…”)!

Surf is a frame of mind as much as a sport, and we’re hoping it comes across in all we do.

We’ve been in talks with paddle board manufacturers, hand board makers, and will continue to sell skim boards. The big hurdle is our physical space — 400 square feet!

    Keep the suggestions coming! Mahalo!

    Terri

Terri, When you and Dave reach out your hands to welcome people from all over the world, some kind of magic sparks! They bring their world into yours, you bring your world into theirs. It is a beautiful thing. I love the Slogan, “For People Who Love Alki Beach”. I have been watching everyday to see what it would be! I like it! Interesting how the saying, “Surf The Web” is as common as the wheel. Get your Dream Catcher, you will need it! Love to Kahuna Dave and Mademoiselle Terri! i am blessed to have you in my day. Mahalo!

  • sophista-tiki December 5, 2014 (3:50 am)

If you ever want to get in on a West Seattle art walk let me know. I’m probably WS only internationally famous tiki artist.

  • Diana December 5, 2014 (6:20 am)

  • Jennifer December 5, 2014 (12:16 pm)

This shop is a little gem and a great addition to West Seattle. Don’t be fooled by the name. They carry more than just beach items. I’ve found some very tasteful and unique things here…a beautiful scarf for me and fun makeup bags for my daughters. There are super cute hoodies and Alki t-shirts. This place is so lovingly put together and the owners will make you feel happy that you stopped in!

  • Terri Nakamura December 5, 2014 (12:53 pm)

Rose Red, I hope our love for all things Alki shows! It is the most magic place in Seattle and we feel blessed to be there. Mahalo!

  • Terri Nakamura December 5, 2014 (12:54 pm)

  • Terri Nakamura December 5, 2014 (12:55 pm)

Jennie, thanks so much for the support and shout!

  • Terri Nakamura December 5, 2014 (12:57 pm)

Jennifer, thanks for the great comment. We make a lot of effort to find things we hope West Seattle (and the world at large) will love!

  • hopey December 5, 2014 (2:39 pm)

Looks fun! We’ll have to stop by.

  • NW December 6, 2014 (10:37 am)

On the right north to northeast winds and if it’s 35 knots or higher the point produces and I have gotten long rides you take advantage of the natural landscape and can pick of waves for a good distance on a longboard or even just kneeboarding it. Also years back when the passenger ferries produced a larger wake I have seen the point firing off clean rights around threes four ft totally rideable. I am not the only person who has surfed it on the strong northerlies.

  • Bill O' December 7, 2014 (7:37 pm)

Awesome little store, cool shirts, hoodies and jewelry, I loved it, really fun spot to shop.

  • Melissa December 8, 2014 (8:00 am)

What a wonderful place to spend time on a blustery winter afternoon — absolutely perfect Christmas gifts abound, ultra cool Alki-themed gear, the beautiful beach and water, and delightful, funny shop hosts — Kahuna Dave and charming Terri! LOVE YOU GUYS!

  • Terri December 8, 2014 (12:33 pm)

Hopey, we HOPE-Y you stop by!

  • Terri December 8, 2014 (12:33 pm)

NW, I think I heard about a storm one year when people actually surfed at Alki

  • Terri December 8, 2014 (12:34 pm)

Bill, so glad you liked it!

  • Terri December 8, 2014 (12:35 pm)

Melissa, I think it’s a pretty unique place. We are grateful to you for your support. Thank you for all you do for us! WE LOVE YOU, TOO!

  • George December 8, 2014 (8:52 pm)

I already invested in two Alki Surf Shop shirts. I plan on getting more. They’re different and not everybody has one yet.

  • Doug December 8, 2014 (10:42 pm)

Glad things are going well for you two. But I want to know why I am the only young person in the picture…..LOL

  • Jim Cissell December 9, 2014 (7:17 am)

    Kahuna Dave and Terri,
You two have done a wonderful thing. And even though some of the readers here “don’t get it,” genius is often misunderstood. You are bringing joy into the world, one shirt at a time. Your hoodies are awesome! Not only do they look sharp, and are a real conversation starter, they saved my bacon camping in my 4Runner in a sub-zero night at Oregon Raceway Park. Thanks!
    Jim

  • yvonne g December 9, 2014 (7:26 am)

I was born in West Seattle and lived just a few blocks from Alki Beach. So many great memories there. My family then moved to Burien where I soon met Kahuna Dave and future fellow Pirate. So proud of your great little shop Dave and Teri. Am looking forward to seeing you in the Spring. Love my shirt. It has travelled many places with me as Morro Bay Ambassador of Alki Nation.

  • Anni Leedy December 9, 2014 (10:01 am)

I love these guys and all the crazy stuff. And, with my own Alki Nation passport I am welcome anywhere! …I think

  • Greg Sinnett December 9, 2014 (10:41 am)

Mahalo…Kerin and I proudly wore our Alki Surf Shop shirts on a cruise from Seattle to New Zealand. People would ask us about Alki and wanted to hang ten with us. Thanks for making us such groovy shirts!

  • Kahuna Dave December 9, 2014 (2:22 pm)

We are grateful to radio and TV personality, Jim Cissell, for his kind words. Uh, Jim, could we do another take? This time with a French accent? Mele Kalikimaka!

  • Kahuna Dave December 9, 2014 (2:35 pm)

Pirates from the ancient Hawaiian kingdom of Burien have taken over the WSB and we dig it! Doug, you are young at heart. The rest of you is Jurassic. George, Anni, Greg, Kerin and Yvonne – mahalo for Keeping it Genuine from the Land Down Under to Cartagena to Chicago to Morro Bay.

  • Terri December 9, 2014 (2:57 pm)

George, thanks for the comment. You are absolutely right when you say we have Alki stuff you can’t find anywhere else. That’s cuz Kahuna Dave designed the screen-printed shirts and tops in the store. We hope you’ll return and find more things you like! Mahalo!

  • Terri December 9, 2014 (2:57 pm)

Doug, you are just lucky, I guess!

  • Terri December 9, 2014 (2:59 pm)

Jim, many thanks for the really nice feedback. Our clothes are made well and are meant to reflect the spirit of Alki and West Seattle, and we’re glad you “get it!” Thank you for being an ambassador of the Alki Nation!

  • Terri December 9, 2014 (3:01 pm)

Yvonne G, We are so happy you’ve found your way to our store. Thank you so much for visiting. And as a fellow Highline Pirate, (which somehow seems apropos since the Pirates land at Alki each Seafair) I know Kahuna Dave appreciates your support, too! Thank you for the shout here!

  • Drew December 10, 2014 (9:51 am)

Love the shop, with the tongue-in-cheek twist. Great products, lots of fun, genuine West Seattle. I definitely plan on stopping by.

  • Mary December 13, 2014 (8:31 am)

Love the Alki Surf shop. Fun place to pick up gifts or memorabilia of Alki Beach. One of my favorite places in Seattle. Got a cool sweatshirt designed from the famous Kahuna Dave.

  • Terri December 19, 2014 (12:33 am)

Drew, thanks a TON! I hope I’m there when you stop by, but if I’m not, Kahuna Dave will take good care of you :) Cheers/Terri

  • Terri December 19, 2014 (12:34 am)

Mary, thank you for visiting Alki Surf Shop. I hope you’ll stop by and see all the new “non-summer” stuff we have in stock. Lots of cold weather things & fun gifty things! Cheers/T
