West Seattle biznote: Great Clips coming to Admiral space

The walk-in haircut chain Great Clips is opening a West Seattle outlet, according to that sign we spotted this afternoon in one of the remaining vacant spaces in the California-fronting retail strip built along with Admiral Safeway two years ago. The chain’s website says they have more than 3,000 outlets in the U.S. and Canada, and notes, apropos to this location, “… Our franchise hair salons are conveniently located in high-visibility strip malls …” There already are more than 60 Great Clips locations in the greater Puget Sound metro area. We have an inquiry out to corporate HQ to see when they’re planning to open.

Los – We checked in recently. Short answer, no. All the locations we’ve speculated on so far have been taken by something else – and yet there are still a fair amount of retail spaces open in good spots around the peninsula, so if they’re really committed, I’m sure they’ll turn up … TR

Bummer, Admiral doesn’t need a haircut chain.

What’s this “haircut” you speak of? Not familiar with the term.

There is already a hair salon next to Admiral Safeway. I’m surprised a lease would allow direct competition.

If you mean the one in Element 42 – that building was built separately from the grocery store and retail building (though it was in similar timeframe, and Safeway originally owned that land too). Madison Development owns Element 42 (same company that now owns and is developing the former “Hole,” now Spruce, on the Junction/Triangle border). American Realty Advisors bought the rest of the site, including the Safeway itself (which the grocery company now leases), one year ago. – TR

Weak sauce. Too bad it isn’t going to be another nail salon.

Way to many choices for haircuts! I heart my local salons vs chains.

There’s also another one across the street, next to Anytime Fitness. It’s very good. *sigh*

Madison sold Element 42. Figure it out people. The developers could care less, they just want to fill space, sell the project and make a profit. Obviously the leasing person has no connections or skills to get better retailers. At some point, just like Magnolia, we need to start taking control of the destiny of our community.

Skye – Sold to whom? I looked through the various layers in property records and wound up with 42nd & Lander LLC, for which Madison’s Tom Lee is a key player. (Same as The Former Hole/Spruce, which is technically 3922 SW Alaska LLC, but that also checks to Tom Lee/Madison.)

Yes, let’s get Chipolte like Nothgate Mall and every repeat center. Think about it, Ballard is getting all the good restaurants because the neighborhood does not like chains.

Now when the Sounders score three goals I may actually be able to take them up on their offer of a “free haircut”.

  • markinthedark July 23, 2013 (9:16 am)

You might be waiting awhile for a free haircut based on recent play.

For a real haircut, by a real barber, go around the corner to The Admiral, on Admiral Way, and see Richard! Great guy, great barber, great conversation, and great prices.

This just in……… if no one goes to Great Clips, say, because their clips aren’t so great, then they will close. The term for this is called The Free Market. We now return you to our regularly scheduled comment thread.

Sorry, comment time is over.
