West Seattle, Washington
11 Monday
Almost impossible to believe, with this weekend’s sunshine, but the official end of summer is less than a week away, and a change-of-seasons tradition is now officially on the schedule: West Seattle’s NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen has announced her Fall Equinox Sunset Watch for next Saturday at Solstice Park (behind the tennis courts across Fauntleroy from the north end of Lincoln Park). It’ll be the first sunset of fall, which officially arrives at 7:49 am our time Saturday morning. Alice advises arriving around 6:45 pm. (Here’s our coverage of her summer-solstice sunset event. At right is Cathy Jaramillo‘s photo of her that night, showing where the setting sun should have lined up if it it had been visible that night. Will it be visible next Saturday? Too soon to say!)
From left, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) proprietor Lora Swift and Skylark Café and Club proprietor Jessie SK led the way as the first-ever West Seattle Junction Car Show afterparty scooter rally left the Hotwire vicinity just after 4 pm.
We rolled video as the riders rolled away:
Right now, they should be enjoying music and more at Skylark – you’re welcome to join in, even without a scooter – and then the fun heads to the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) for “Quadrophenia” at 8 pm.
(SDOT “live” camera looking north along 99)

Just in case you wondered. We’ve been out here at the West Seattle Junction Car Show all day and heard it – and several people have pinged it since. Thanks to Damon and Patrick for the quick answer when we put the question out via Twitter. (added) Also via Twitter, there’s one report it was two F-15s from a New Orleans-based group.
11:16 AM: We’re live on site at the West Seattle Junction Car Show (and proud to be a co-sponsor again this year) – and lots of people are out and about! Here’s the “live” look from SDOT’s camera by KeyBank, pointed north:
The first raffle winner (ticket sales benefit Pencil Me In For Kids) has just been announced. We’re right in front of Easy Street Records and Café:
(Those are our first-ever freebies on the table – not sure how long they’ll last, but we thought we’d offer something practical, since winter weather – as unthinkable as it seems right now – is a place where WSB community collaboration has always shone!) Right around the corner from us is where you’ll find the raffle tickets, at a booth on Easy Street’s south side. Adding more photos shortly. Tip: Don’t wait till the last hour to come down – in the past, we’ve seen early departures. Also, in case you’re wondering about music, it’s classic oldies – ’60s and ’70s.
ADDED 11:56 AM: Zucchini 500 racing at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market around the corner!
The zucchini celebration even extends to the 50-pound version that you’ll find at the ROckridge Cidery booth:
Even though The Junction’s streets are closed (same “footprint” as Summer Fest), the Farmers’ Market is on, full strength, till 2 pm as always. Thanks to all the cool people who have stopped by to say hi – including a dozen or so who told us they moved here recently and use WSB (even before they got here) to plug into what’s going on. Also just talked to longtime WSB sponsor BJ from Brunette Mix, which is here in The Junction (on SW Oregon). Great to see EVERYBODY who is out and about – lots of smiles regarding the great weather. We’re gathering more photos right now – adding shortly.
12:53 PM UPDATE: Show organizer Michael Hoffman tells us they’ve set a record for registrations – 222! This year, you might recall, motorcycles and scooters were welcomed too – here’s some of what we’ve seen so far:
And of course – more cars! Here’s a 1963 Imperial Crown, entry #105:
Also from ’63, a Mercury Monterey, entry #66:
All the cars look great, gleaming in the sun … now we’re at the time of day where it’s shining on both sides of the street:
2 PM UPDATE: One more hour of prime viewing time before the awards! Here’s a 1974 Volkswagen Westfalia, entry #36:
And a ’65 Mustang, entry #163:
Previous photos are by Patrick Sand; next two are by WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli, with a closer look at some of the beautiful details:
]
Remember the scooter rally’s coming up right after the car show too – one of the organizers, Hotwire’s Lora Swift, is here chatting with us now; they did a dry run on the route, and she says it was “awesome.” Get your scooter to Hotwire at 4410 California SW by 4 pm. (Whether you’re rallying or not, you’re also invited to the “Quadrophenia” screening at Feedback Lounge tonight!)
3:38 PM UPDATE: The show’s wrapping up with the final award having just been presented – we have recorded video of the entire ceremony and will add that later (added – here’s that video):
Among the many winners, this 1934 Pontiac convertible:
The cars are still on display – the timing’s worked out better this year, along with the increased turnout and great weather. The announcer just noted the street will reopen by 6 pm, so take note of that, in case you were wondering. The raffles during the day raised $700 for PMIFK. Watch for more photos later – either added to this story, or in a “Report #2”! (And if you have a gallery of your own – we know a LOT of people were out taking photos – send us a link, so we can include it!)
LATE-NIGHT NOTE: Updated fundraising total – between the raffles and the “50/50” drawing, $950 raised, according to organizer Hoffman – and that, like the registration total, is a record, he says.
With two months to go till completion, the Harbor/Urban all-apartments development Nova started leasing this weekend in The Triangle, and has launched its website too. We visited the 62-unit building this week, in advance of the milestone. See our photo tour ahead:
That’s a “live” look at the heart of The Junction (courtesy of SDOT’s traffic cam), where the fifth annual West Seattle Junction Car Show is under way till about 4 pm – with afterparties this year! Here’s the full lineup of highlights from the WSB West Seattle Events Calendar:
TRAFFIC ALERTS:
*California SW is closed Oregon to Edmunds and SW Alaska 42nd to 44th for the car show.
*If you missed it last night – the northbound 99 weekend closure is OVER – the highway reopened Saturday night.
*However, there IS a Sunday night southbound 99 closure, as is usual lately – 9 pm-5 am, between the Battery Street Tunnel and West Seattle Bridge.
(More of the earlybirds in place even before 8 this morning!)
WEST SEATTLE JUNCTION CAR SHOW: Under way till 4 pm in the heart of The Junction. Classic cars, motorcycles, and scooters this year – come see who showed up; the streets are closed and it’s free to wander. (added) Here’s video as entries were rolling in this morning:
At car-show central by California/Alaska, come buy tickets for the fundraising raffle (benefits Pencil Me In For Kids) and come see us as we cover the show “live” from the WSB booth after 9 or so (right by Easy Street Records). We’re offering the first-ever WSB-branded freebie:
First-come, first-served, limited quantity, and all that boilerplate – hey, it’s going to get cold one of these days. And if you throw it in the glovebox, you have our number handy, any time. P.S. The car show has afterparties too – later in this preview …

8:06 AM: A few reports in so far (from various spots around West Seattle) of loud explosion-type sounds. We’re monitoring the scanner and the 911 log and so far no related incidents have been reported – here or anywhere else in Seattle, anyway. Just wanted to make a note here in case you were wondering whether anybody else heard them! Please comment (or e-mail us) if you have any more info – we’ll update if there’s anything to add.
8:35 AM NOTE: Still a mystery – nothing locally or regionally. If anything ever emerges, we’ll add it here; otherwise, it’s in the “mystery boom” file …
(Early photo by WSB’s Patrick Sand, added 7:06 am – participants arriving)
Before we get to the full daily preview – a quick reminder that the fifth annual West Seattle Junction Car Show is an hour and a half away, 8 am-4 pm in the heart of The Junction. If you have a classic car, motorcycle, or scooter that meets the criteria, there’s same-day registration – info’s here. If you’re interested in going – it’s free (but bring $ for the raffles, which raise money for Pencil Me In For Kids). Whether you’re going or not, remember that California SW will be closed to traffic from Oregon to Edmunds, and SW Alaska from 44th to 42nd. But the weekly West Seattle Farmers Market IS ON, 10 am-2 pm as always – featuring the annual Zucchini 500 “races” for kids. Co-sponsors for this year’s Junction Car Show again include WSB (full list here), and we’ll be there reporting live all day. Two after-parties are in the works, a scooter rally and screening of “Quadrophenia” – more on those in today’s preview.
Parade season’s not over yet, as the Denny International Middle School community knows! The first two photos from Saturday are courtesy of Denny principal Jeff Clark, who reports:
The Denny International Middle School scholars did a great job today celebrating Fiestas Patrias in the South Park parade. The band sounded terrific and the Dolphin pride was loud and clear. Thank you to all the students, families, and staff who joined in this fun and important community celebration!
It was a spectacular parade:
That photo is by contributing photojournalist Nick Adams, and we have 20 more of Nick’s photos – dancers, musicians, spectators, more – in a gallery published on our partner site The South Park News; see them here.
At West Seattle Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Seattle Lutheran High School‘s Bryce Morgan and Jake Lamb provided the Saints with an offensive one-two punch, but their A-game wasn’t enough to beat the Eastside Catholic junior varsity. Eastside rolled up a big early lead and hung on to finish with a 40-26 win. Eastside ran out 26 quick points in the first quarter, while Seattle Lutheran had only one touchdown in that quarter, scored by Bryce Morgan.
The Saints had a much-better second half, which saw Lamb lead the offense on the ground.
Lamb picked up a touchdown after Lutheran’s defense managed to contain Eastside on several drives. This was the last non-conference game; the Saints return to conference play against Concrete next Saturday at 1 pm, which is also the homecoming game.
Highway 99 between the West Seattle Bridge and downtown is open again in both directions, with this weekend’s closure ending early as crews finished connecting the new northbound section through SODO to the rest of the roadway. Ahead, the detailed announcement from WSDOT:Read More
Luthier Todd Baker was doing some restringing when we stopped by the first-ever West Seattle Guitar Show and Sale at Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) this evening. As the original announcement explained, this is a show *only* for West Seattle guitar makers, sellers, and tradespeople. It’s continuing into the night, with Aaron Daniel performing at 9 pm. It’s co-presented by West Seattle’s Thunder Road Guitars:
Thunder Road is online-only but looking for a place to set up bricks-and-mortar business, according to proprietor Frank Gross, who says they’re “actively searching for a retail storefront / showroom … Ideally, something along California Avenue that is between 500 – 1000 square feet. If you know of something opening up, feel free to send e-mail at hello@thunderroadguitars.com.”
If you’ve read the notes that have been up on the windows/door of temporarily shuttered Jones Barbeque in West Seattle, you might recall a reopening date of September 15th was projected at one point. We’ve been trying to get followup information to verify that – but we were unsuccessful until finally today spotting an open door on the restaurant at 4417 Fauntleroy Way SW. Not open because the restaurant’s reopened, yet, but they WILL reopen, we were told – they’re aiming for Thursday. Besides doing some work inside, they also had family matters to deal with – the death of co-owner Joyce Lee Jones (here’s her obituary). When they reopen, they’ll be known as Seattle Hog Heaven, the family says – the Jones Barbeque name will be incorporated, too.

Been to Alki today? Notice something missing? Thanks to volunteers including the ones above, here’s what you’re NOT seeing on and in the Alki Beach sand:
Today’s big work party for International Coastal Cleanup Day, led by partners including Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, is a wrap – but help ’em out and be sure to toss your non-recyclables and pack out your recyclables next time you’re there!
ADDED SUNDAY NIGHT: Thanks to Tom Foley for additional information and photos. He says about 80 people joined in:
And the cigarette butts alone totaled more than 30 pounds, Tom adds. Two unusual items recovered: a rusty hatchet and pocket knife:
Tom volunteers with Puget Soundkeeper Alliance.

The small stuff’s there too, of course. Commemorative spoons, anyone?
And it’s never too soon to get ready for Christmas:

(West Seattle’s Friday sunrise – photo shared by Ashley – thanks!)

If you like explosive, action-packed football, you wouldn’t have been disappointed if you had come early and stayed late Friday night at Chief Sealth International High School‘s road game against Rainier Beach HS. While RB scored on the opening kickoff and racked up 28 unanswered points by 30 seconds into the second quarter, the Seahawks made a go of battling back:
Two months ago, we reported on the city’s consideration of a system to automatically detect gunfire – and one vendor’s suggestion that it be purchased and placed in part of West Seattle, as well as two other “hot spots” in the city. (Here’s the story, which included the map you see above.) At the time, it was just a presentation – but now, Mayor McGinn says he is going to propose almost $1 million for a system – brand not specified, so far – in his budget plan for next year. Read the city announcement (which includes other public-safety-budget proposals) here.

Police were still talking to people at the scene, so we don’t have official information on how it happened, but a vehicle went up the embankment at Fauntleroy and Myrtle and took out one of the signs that the Gatewood Elementary PTA announced last February.

No injuries reported.
