January 21st memorial for lifelong West Seattleite Jack Hanning

One week from today, family and friends will gather to remember lifelong West Seattleite Jack Hanning. His family shares this remembrance:

Jack Hanning
“Maui Jack”
3/24/25-1/7/12

Jack was born in Seattle to Jack and Irene Hanning. He was a lifelong resident of West Seattle and graduated in ‘43 from West Seattle High School.

Jack joined the Sea Scouts and sailed on the Yankee Clipper; later in life, he served on the Sea Scout Foundation.

He volunteered for the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during WWII and served on the Pogy SS266 from ’43-‘46. In ‘47, Jack married Bettie McCoy, and they celebrated their 64th anniversary last June 14th. He graduated from the U of W in ’53, then worked for Benton Realty before opening Hanning Realty in ’56. Later he added Olympic Escrow. After 50 years in the business, he closed his office in ‘06.

Jack loved to travel. He and Bettie visited Hawaii every year for 32 years. They also traveled Europe, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

Jack served as President of the West Seattle Hi-Yu celebration in ‘73 and President of the West Seattle Lions in ’99. He belonged to the West Seattle Monogram Club, the VFW Farwell Roosevelt Post and the Alki Kids Breakfast Club. As a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII, reuniting with his Navy buddies at the National Submariner Conventions was a joy for him.

Jack was a loving husband to wife Bettie, loving father to daughters Jami (Jim) Vaux and Lori Hanning, and loving grandfather to Jeffrey Vaux. He is also survived by brother Rome Hanning and nephew Michael Hanning of Long Beach, California.

We wish to thank Val, Otelia, Dan, and Claudia at the Alki Adult Family Home for their loving and compassionate care of our Jack.

Memorial Service will be held at Admiral Congregational Church, 4320 SW Hill, Saturday, January 21, at 1:30 pm. Remembrances may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, PO Box 75169, Seattle, WA 98175

Bettie and Jack are just the nicest people you could ever meet. I loved spending time with Jack learning about his work, life in West Seattle and the history of Admiral UCC Church. His love for Bettie was enormous and he often talked about how they met.

We have had the pleasure of knowing Jack and Betty all of our lives. Jack and our father were friends in high school, and both families were active in the Orthopedic Guild and West Seattle Hi Yu, where our sister Saundra was a Princess. Thank You for this special relationship. The daughters of Rex Selle, Carolyn, Regina, and Saundra
