West Seattle help for the holidays: Adopt-a-family, anyone?

We’ve received more than a few notices about holiday giving campaigns – a roundup with some of the newest ones is in the works, in fact – but we don’t know the definitive answer to this question from Gayle, so we’re putting it out in hopes that, if there *is* such a campaign, you’ll share the info:

In the spirit of helping folks locally, I wonder if you are aware of any West Seattle ‘adopt a family’ programs for the holidays? I’ve contacted the WS food bank about it but thought I’d check with you as well.

I think it’s such a great way to make a difference in these difficult economic times and can also be a meaningful way to teach children the spirit of giving.

Let us know – in the comment section, preferably – if you know of one!

I don’t know of one off the top of my head but if you contact the United Way I bet they can help.

Our family “adopts” a family in need every holiday season through Hope Lutheran Church’s Human Care Ministry. Mary Anne deVry at 932-5054 is the person to talk to.

The community centers normally have some names. One for sure is at Pathfinder K-8; near the holiday season, we build a list of families that need support. if you are interested in this list, please shoot me an email

Providence Regina House, a food bank in south Seattle, hosts an adopt-a-family program and coordinates with an adopt-a-family program in White Center. You might want to call Paige, the Regina House manager at 206-763-9204 for info about the White Center program.

We ‘adopted’ a family last year through New Traditions and it was a great experience for us. They are an organization with a mission statement to “break the cycle of addiction by providing abstinence based treatment that focuses on reconnecting mothers with themselves, their families and their communities.” Our contact was Heather Garcia. http://www.new-traditions.org/

I’ve participated in the Anthony Robbins Foundation Basket Brigade in years past. How it works is donors are matched with families in need. The donor gets information about the family; where they live and how many people are in the household. The donor then shops for Thanksgiving meal and deliveres it to the family.

    The website is

Catholic Community Services also coordinates an Adopt a Family program — (206) 328-5415 or katies@ccsww.org.

Safe Futures Youth Center on 35th provides support to many families. They work with at-risk youth and their families, and provide assistance in everything from tutoring, to holiday gifts, to thanksgiving dinners. In recent years, Safe Futures has had a decrease in donations, making it impossible to help the nearly 40 west seattle families, that they use to, around the holidays. Please consider donating time, $, or holiday food and gifts. I’ve personally been there when holiday meals were delivered to families, and also witnessed a single mom bring her two school age kids to choose some Christmas presents on Christmas Eve. It was extremely moving. Safe Futures does great work and is a valuable assett to our West Seattle Community.

I believe the WS Y could help match you with a family.

I don’t know if these organizations have such a program, but perhaps the American Legion, VFW, or West Seattle, or White Center Eagles?

Compass Housing Alliance provides a range of services and housing options to people struggling with homelessness and poverty in the Seattle area.

Compass manages 25 different programs in the Puget Sound area one of which is a permanent housing building in the White Center area of West Seattle. The Courts are a cooperative permanent housing community serving families many of which are immigrants.

We are looking for individuals, groups and families to adopt a child. Once you sign-up you will be matched with a child and given their wish list. We have over 120 children signed up for our program currently.

I have included the United Way Link here.

I’m helping to organize the West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA’s Holiday Giving Tree. Our giving tree supports West Seattle school children. We’d love to hear from any families, teams, or companies interested in adopting a family this season. Please contact us at wsdesk@seattleymca.org. Thank you for your support!

I am on the other side of the fence….in need of help. I have three children I am managing on my own and I do ok ( we have a roof over our heads, and food for the most part)but holidays are the worst. I have no idea how/if I am going to be able to pull them off this year.

Thanks to all who listed programs…I will try contacting them for the reverse. :0)

YMCA ALWAYS has Adopt-A-Family – we do it every year and it’s GREAT. You can call the main office downtown and they will send you a family bio – and then you drop off the gifts downtown as well.

p.s. you can request a W. Seattle family! Last year we requested a “single mom” family and they accomodated!

I am putting together the adopt-a-family program this year at New Traditions, currently we are helping 60 women and their children. Our clients have made a commitment to break the cycle of chemical dependency, making it difficult to hold a job as treatment services can consume much of their week. As a result most of our clients are either receiving limited resources from the state or are homeless. Please consider helping New Traditions this holiday season with our adopt a family program, our goal is to grant at least one holiday wish for each client and their children. If you are interested please contact me at leanne@new-traditions.org or at 206-762-7207.
    Thank-you and Happy Holidays!
