Why procrastinate? Registration now open for West Seattle 5K

(May 2009 photo by John Loftus)
Last year, more than 1,000 people turned out to run, walk and raise money for West Seattle schools in the first-ever West Seattle 5K on Alki. Registration has just opened for this year’s second annual West Seattle 5K – May 23, organized again this year by, and benefiting, the West Seattle High School PTSA – and WSB has joined the team as a co-sponsor. There’s a 25% discount for early registration – you can start from this page.

Question: does this “raise money for West Seattle schools” per WSB description, or only for W Seattle High School, which is what the race website says.

Last year, they partnered with a few other WS schools to which participants could opt to donate, and that is what the opening line refers to. I just checked with Jo Bader from West Seattle HS PTSA and that is NOT in the works so far this year, so this year, as the website says, as of right now, it is a WSHS PTSA benefit. I will add a few more words in the line about this year so that is clear – TR

Does this also mean May 23rd is car free Sunday along Alki? It was last year.

Admiral – According to Jo Bader, the city hasn’t figured out if it will have car-free days at all this year – budget challenges, but they’re looking for sponsors – so that’s up in the air. She says they have a commitment that if car-free days (“Celebrate Seattle Summer Streets” last year, you may recall) DO happen, the Alki one WOULD be on the West Seattle 5K day … TR

I am hoping other WS schools join in, if possible. Kind of curious why it changed from last year.

Regardless, thanks for the heads up. I’m one of those who has never run a 5K, but four months should be enough time to train (I hope!) for a great cause in such a great location.

Sorry, comment time is over.
