West Seattle Christmas trees: The 2009 price survey

treesgraphic.jpgIt’s another WSB holiday tradition, along with keeping a list of holiday events (the West Seattle Holidays page) – we’ve surveyed local tree lots for a sampling of prices, in case you’re going out tree-shopping soon and undecided about where to go. Go here to see the list of lots and sample prices; it’s also linked from the Holidays page so you can find it fast any time.

    What about McClendens hardware?

The furthest south we went is Holy Family, since that’s literally feet over the line. White Center has several Christmas tree suppliers – we’ve mentioned a couple of them on White Center Now, but it seems every time we drive south we spot another one – TR

We went to McClendens last Sunday and they had exactly 1 Noble Fir in stock. Home Depot trees were cheap but dry as a bone. Ended up buying one at Tony’s. Not cheap but a beautiful tree.

We also looked around, and stuck with Tony’s. It was a bit more expensive than the competition, but light years ahead in terms of quality.

We bought our tree at West Seattle Nursery this year (after years of H.R. trees.) Since plants and trees are their speciality we should not have been surprised by the fine condition and deep selection of trees. And I thought they would be more expensive and they weren’t. We had $$ left over so that’s going to the giving tree.

We went to Holy Family. We wanted a small tree. They didnt have any, but were more than happy to trim one down for us. They charged us just $20. I thought we would help them out this year since I think this is their 1st year selling.

Our family has found it more difficult each year to find the unsheared “Charlie Brown” trees–also called “natural”. We prefer the look and openness of these trees, dislike the unnatural look of the sheared trees, and don’t like the stiffness (or the stiff price!) of the nobles. I guess most people disagree, because the selection for “our” tree is slimmer each year.

Holy Rosary stopped carrying them, and the last few years we’ve had to leave West Seattle to find our trees at Herr Lumber in Burien, which has had a good selection. When we looked yesterday, they only had 4 unsheared trees left, all too small for us. Following a tip, we did find our trees at McLendon’s–of the last half-dozen they had.

I see West Seattle Nursery has some–we checked McLendon’s on our way back from Burien, and didn’t get that far. When we tried there a few years ago, they had a very small and not very good selection, but it may have just been the year. I’m glad to see they’re still carrying them, and we’ll check them out again next year.

At McLendon’s we ran into another gentleman and his daughter, also desperately seeking unsheared trees. So I know the fans are out there!

We still miss the Chubby n Tubby trees of yore, which I believe were “unsheared” and definitely “Charlie Brown.” Thanks for the update on what you discovered! – TR

We also wanted a Charlie Brown tree which has been our traditional tree, but had no luck finding one this year. We ended up buying a beautiful noble fir at Tony’s although more expensive than our previous trees.

Sorry, comment time is over.
