Video: Tuskegee Airmen spotlighted at Denny assembly

No classes districtwide yesterday, so Denny International Middle School celebrated Veterans Day today. Our video shows the featured guest speaker, Tommie Lamb, president of the Puget Sound-based Sam Bruce Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, who made history in the 1940s as the first African-American pilots in the U.S. military. His speech was preceded by students talking about the Tuskegee Airmen’s history and accomplishments. Denny student musicians performed at today’s assembly too.

What an honor for those kids to meet the Airmen.

I must admit, I’m a bit jealous. They’re some of my biggest heroes. I can’t even put into words how proud and emotional I feel about them. My biggest wish in life is to leave an impact, and leave the world better for my having been here. These men have done that, and more.

Very well put Sacatosh. One of my most prized possessions in life was an autographed print called “Two down, one to go” that portrayed C.D. “Lucky Lester” in his P-51 Mustang. Unfortunately for me it was lost in a house fire. I have the utmost respect for these airmen and all of the men and women in the military past and present who have sacrificed so much for us to live the American dream…

These men are the American epitome!… they fought for their country without prejudice! they didn’t fight for a black man’s right… they didn’t fight against the white man… they didn’t fight on a grudge held against humanity… they fought galantly as Americans against oppression. Thank you Americans for your bravery and contribution to our country!
