Well, that’s all we could think of for a headline, given that Beach Drive Blog already took “Tern, Tern, Tern” (here’s the soundtrack). Great pix on BDB: Terns over West Seattle waters.

Heh – fun to know we’re not the only ones who sing that song when we see a tern. “There is a bird, tern, tern, tern.”
I went to school in Northern California and heard this perhaps apocryphal story. In the eighties, the Eureka California police department had seized multiple tons of marijuana and had to get rid of it. Humboldt County is miles from nowhere, so the local sawmill offered to burn the pot along with the wood debris left over from milling.

The smoke plume of course was thicker than normal, and being on the coast, a number of seabirds were exposed to the burning Mary Jane. Of course, flying is very difficult to begin with so the local seabirds started falling from the sky to lay helpless on the ground, flapping around. Needless to say, the press got wind of this and eventually the police department held a press conference and took questions. Things were rather heated until the chief of police took the podium and sought to assure everyone.

He said: “The Humboldt Police Department is taking all steps in this matter to ensure that no tern remains unstoned.”
