Low-low tide again today; sea-creature sights from Sunday

Thanks to Greg Wright for sharing photos from his low-tide sightseeing on Sunday; just before 1 pm today, the tide will be just as low as it was around noon yesterday (chart here), and that’s the lowest tide of the month before the low tides start getting higher again. A few more of Greg’s photos, ahead:

Four weeks from now, we’ll see the lowest low tides of the summer (here’s the June tide chart) – that’s when Seattle Aquarium volunteer beach naturalists will be back out again, too (this Google map shows locations, dates, times).

is there a better spot for viewing the beaches, meaning, Lincoln Park, Fauntleroy Ferry terminal (someone told me its great there), Alki, etc.

Low tide was great this weekend! I saw nudibranchs for the first time. So cool! Plus a ton of other stuff. I spent a couple hours at Constellation Park every day of the weekend. It was fabulous.

Walked along Lincoln Park’s beach during today’s low tide.

Saw about 5 starfish, IIRC all but one were the blue-ish knd). Three were in various places on the ground, two had themselves attatched to the side of a large boulder.

Also saw one crab. (The standard size, as opposed to a hermit crab). Don’t know if he was alive, because there was no movement. Didn’t want to poke him with my cane and annoy him ;) .

And, although I went on a couple of low tide beach walks down there last month, which were my first at any beach in many years, I noticed some camo seaweed! Hadn’t recalled seeing it before, but it had that blotchy camoflauge type pattern on it, and appeared to be in the same or similar colors used in much of the camo clothing. However, being red/green colorblind and otherwise having trouble identifying many other colors, my perception may have been wrong.

Thanks to WSB for these low tide alerts, and to them and the photo contributors, for posting the starfish pics, so that I remembered to actually look for them today!

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post, was an interesting sight.

As I was walking the beachside path south of Lowman Beach, north of Coleman Pool, a crow (not a seagull) was wrestling with a live fish, on the bulkhead. He took off with it, as I approached.

Too bad he didn’t leave it. I would have enjoyed a fresh sardine! ;)
