Update: Crash at 35th and Trenton

Police are still on the scene of what appears to be a single-car accident. An overturned car is blocking the two northbound lanes of 35th as investigators try to determine what happened. Witnesses on the scene reported that a single female occupant was removed from the car and was treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital. Police are not saying if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. 12:15 AM UPDATE: That report was from Christopher, this is an update from TR: We just checked the scene — the car’s been turned upright, and traffic was getting through on the southbound side of 35th – looked like the car would be towed and the north lanes cleared shortly. Information on the victim’s condition may be hard to come by but we will check again and post a followup when we find out.

The car is now turned back over and is being towed off. The road surface has a ton of glass on it and they are not yet opening Northbound 35th to traffic, but it will be soon.

It looked to me like she had hit a curb and flatted both passenger side tires and it sounded like she was going really fast. I heard two big thumps (one was her front passenger side hitting the phone pole) before the car came to rest on the road. She was conscious after the accident and seemed to be pretty ok. Though, if alcohol is not involved, I would be surprised. The DUI patrol was out as a part of the investigation. (as was the heavy rescue briefly) There were a whole mess of emergency vehicles out for it and then had the whole road blocked off for a while.

Not that I’ve attempted it myself, but it is not all that easy to turn over a car, especially a sedan like that. The center of gravity is fairly low and mid-size American cars are designed to be stable during emergency maneuvers. I expect she either had a lot of speed and cut the wheel hard or maybe hit a high curb at a sweet spot. Extra thanks to all of the WSB readers who commented with excellent info as this was happening.

I’ve flipped a coupe or two but never a sedan. It’s surprisingly easy once you get one side of the car off the ground, especially if there’s any sideways motion at all. Mr. Boffoli’s theory sounds accurate. Hopefully the driver is ok and has learned what not to do next time.

I agree with Chris, these things always amaze me. All in all there had to be a ton of speed involved, this doesn’t happen at 45mph with a car.

austin> I assume you were racing your coupes, not lallygagging at 25mph

I can’t imagine being able to flip a car at 35-45 on a straight street like 35th.

    @ Mike
‘this doesn’t happen at 45mph with a car’

Maybe not, but on this stretch of I-35,
    the speed limit is 35mph.

They all drive too fast, drunk or not.

Another piece of evidence why 35th needs to be one lane each way with a center turn lane, like Fauntleroy Way. Enough!

    Agree with Big Al.

    Shrink the 35th ave highway!
