West Seattle’s most famous bassets, up close and personal

Perhaps you’re among the thousands who’ve seen their “Bassets for Obama” video — now, meet Buddy, Barkley, and Stevo up close and personal, with one day to go in The Big Vote:

Walking through West Seattle’s Westcrest Park with the Off-Leash Area’s steward Steve “Stevo” McElhenney and his basset hounds Buddy and Barkley is not unlike walking into Cheers behind Norm.

There’s the Great Dane puppy, the professional dog walkers out with a brace of 14 clients, the guy with the infant twins in a stroller – they all know Stevo, Buddy, and Barkley, and Stevo, Buddy, and Barkley know them. It’s more of a relaxed reaction than a rock-star reception for the two West Seattle dogs who’ve been making the rounds on YouTube and Air America for the past few weeks.

For WSB video, Stevo explained where he came up with the idea for the Bassets for Obama trailer:

He added he got the campaigning idea after being approached about doorbelling in his precinct, pre-B4O – the thought occurred to him that something fun like this might be more effective in getting the message out.

Meantime, in news of a different election, Steve wants everybody to know that Air America’s still taking votes until Thursday in the video contest which features 10 clips including this one that started it all for he and “the boyz”:

So you have till tomorrow to vote (go here and scroll down to the “poll” area on the bottom of the sidebar on the right side of the page; note, it looks like they’re now requiring people to register with the AA website before voting).

What Steve doesn’t know yet is the status of adding the video to the official Obama campaign website. While he’s been contacted and had a couple of conversations with campaign workers, he hasn’t heard back from anyone. (Update: As of Halloween, it’s been added – see the link here.)

By the way, as Westcrest devotees know, Buddy had a bit of a health scare recently, but Stevo says Buddy is just fine now and back to his old self, as you can see in this video – sort of; well, Buddy IS getting on in years, after all:

At the end of Tuesday’s walk, Stevo noted the fog and said Seattle’s weather is taking a turn. Soon Buddy and Barkley won’t be out riding again until spring. But if the good weather hangs on for a few more days, Buddy and Barkley might just make one more “campaign swing” through the neighborhood.

Thanks for the tip on voting, couldn’t figure it out! B4O is closing in on the leader and AA’s “registration” consists of just one window – doesn’t even take your email address – so don’t let that stop you from voting for the boys! :)
