2 links of note: HPAC jail-site page; salon-crash neighbor

LINK #1: Highland Park Action Committee‘s website now has the promised page compiling information in the group’s fight against the two proposed city-jail sites in southeast WS.

LINK #2: As a side note to this morning’s truck crash at Jan’s Salon south of Morgan Junction (WSB coverage here and here), salon neighbor Chill has posted a note to clients on its blog.

I just wanted to suggest a point for others who might be writing to Seattle about this. Highland park is pretty much forgotten when it comes to improvements. There is rubble in the streets, glass on the sidewalks, unpaved alleys(city property), deteriorating roads, atrocious drainage, and a weak response to car prowls in our parks. There is overall a lack of investment in the area. So when Seattle wants to use us as the place to dump the things that rich areas don’t want, we better see an increase investment in the area to offset the negative impact of a jail.

Seattle does not want to own the south park drawbridge, because they would have to fix it. In some senses this may be an opportunity to demand Seattle treat us like the more affluent neighborhoods.

To all those interested in the jail sites proposed for Highland Park and have just arrived to the West Seattle Blog, please know that there are pages and pages of stories published by WSB along with many comments.

To find these stories, from the homepage of WSB, search “Highland Park”, “Jail sites”. Most of these stories, except for some reason this particular update, are filled with links to background and previous discussion.

For any one reading this with an interest, it is absolutely worth while to go back and read these.

Until the Highland Park Action Committee upgrades their website or someone else takes the initiative and creates a temporary group on Google or Yahoo, etc., we are forced to utilize WSB space. I would encourage those who have volunteered to take care of that, to do so as soon as possible.

I am hopeful that the HPAC website will be able to immediately accommodate current and future discussion, or else immediately create it’s own discussion area, as mentioned.

Also, for folks just arriving to WSB, the next meeting of HPAC and any and all friends of Highland Park will be June 2 at 7:00 PM, at the Highland Park Improvement Club, 1116 SW Holden St. (about .50 mile from the West Marginal Way proposed site.

As always, thanks WSB for recognizing and addressing the fact that West Seattle’s eastern most boundary is the Duwamish Greenbelt and Highland Park.

Sorry, comment time is over.
