Tomorrow night, West Seattle Christian Church (WSB sponsor) invites you to come watch a movie, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” for free, 6 pm in the downstairs social hall, with concessions sold — popcorn, snacks, and Italian sodas — as a fundraiser for a special trip some WSCC teens are taking to Mexico this July. No, it’s not a trip to go lie on the beach; they will be driving from Seattle to Tijuana in rented vans as part of a 19-member group helping Amor Ministries build a home for a family. Above, you see some of the participants; left to right, they are 15-year-old West Seattle High School sophomore Thea N, 14-year-old WSHS freshman Miriam N, 13-year-old Madison Middle School 8th grader Lauren S, 12-year-old Madison 6th grader Darrian T, 15-year-old WSHS sophomore Dominique T, 15-year-old Chief Sealth High School sophomore Ian H. WSB interviewed three of them by e-mail with the help of WSCC’s Norma Hernandez, who says, “We’ve been told to expect the temperature in the hundreds; they’ll be sleeping in tents, with no running water or flushing toilets. The group is payig 100% of the cost of the materials, travel expenses, and tool rentals (manual tools, since no electricity is available).” Here’s what the teens have to say about their trip and other ways they’ve helped people near and far:

Lauren S., 13

Why are you doing this? Because I love being part of the youth group and this trip will help me connect better with them while being able to make this world a better place for a family in need.

What are you most looking forward to? The chance to get to meet and know the family in Mexico.

What are some of the volunteer things you’ve done before? I go with the youth group to work with City Team where we serve hot meals to homeless or poor people. We have cleaned out a food banks food pantry. We collect food for food banks.

What would you tell people are the top 3 reasons for supporting this trip? There is a family in need that needs us. It’s a good thing to do.

Miriam N. 15

Why are you doing this? I want to be part of building this house for a needy family and I want to have fun! God calls us who have blessings to share them with others.

What are you most looking forward to? All of it! I can’t wait to experience the whole thing.

What are some of the volunteer things you’ve done before? Give out water at the Summerfest. Collect food for food banks. Serve food at a shelter. I have also helped serve food to elderly.

What do you hope to accomplish? Complete the whole house in the 5 days we have. I would hate to have to leave and not see the family move in to a completed house.

Dominique T. 15

Why are you doing this? Because it’s a new experience and I want to help people.

What do you hope to accomplish? Have a good experience building the house and being with the family who we are go to build the house for.

What are you most looking forward to? The drive, it’s going to be a really interesting drive down there.

What are some of the volunteer things you’ve done before? Helped clean garbage for the city, helped build picnic tables for my old middle school, cleaned up vandalism (graffiti) off a local Junction business wall, and helped feed the homeless with the youth group.

What would you tell people are the top three reasons for supporting this trip? It’s a great expierience for us (teens) reminds us of our blessings, we get to help out people in need, and share the message of Christ.

Norma adds, “The cost of the entire mission project has gone up since this was planned last year, due to the increases of gas and food. So we need to raise as much money as possible (or those going will have to pay the shortfall themselves). The group is very excited to go but none more than the teens who are volunteering to go. Carlos Huizar, Youth Ministries Director at WS Christian Church, is the primary contact for this trip. However, the success of this trip relies on the help of numerous other adults who are volunteering their time to making sure this is a very memorable and life changing event. Without their numerous hours of work this would not be able to get done. But, in the end, the 19 going are the true heroes in our eyes. When other are trying to find ways to have summer fun these people will be sweating in the desert heat of Mexico.

“They have been doing fundraisers for a few weeks now, including Buy A Mile at $2 a mile (total miles there and back is 2600 miles) and Movie Nites. This is a great way to have a family night out or for teens to hang out at a safe place. We will be having a yard sale May 16th and 17th where we will be selling items donated by friends, families, and church family. Of course 100% of all funds donated go only to making this trip possible by covering expenses for the 19.”

“Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” — free admission, concession sales to support the mission trip to Mexico — will be shown 6 pm tomorrow (Saturday) night at West Seattle Christian Church, southeast corner of 42nd/Genesee, downstairs in the social hall.
