Shoremont on Alki – a historic photo

shoremonthistoricphoto.jpg

After this morning’s report updating the plan by the design/development company that just bought the Shoremont @ 57th & Alki, Tom J posted a comment on yesterday’s report and subsequently sent us the photo he mentioned (thank you!). It’s his uncle and dad outside the Shoremont in 1946. Tom says his dad recently celebrated his 90th birthday. The Shoremont is a few years younger than Tom’s dad – county property records say it was built in 1923.

Cool. I might have some pics as far back as the 80’s with that place in the background. LOL!

It is a nice pic. They look like a couple’a Goombas. No offense intended, just an observation.

Great info. There is a neighborhood story that the building in some form was moved to the location from the other side of Alki. These moves, at least for my house, happened in the late 20s. This seems unlikely if the building was built there in 23.

Good thing people are taking photos. You better all get out there and take some more, since the rest of Alki is due to be torn down any day now.

It makes me ill that they’re tearing down this building. Green my a**.

Former NYer….As a former NYer myself, and someone not unfamiliar with eating gabba-goal sangwiches from time to time, I’d say the little guy on the left is a paisan but the guy on the right is too white, too square and too tall to be a “friend of ours.” My guess is that little Frankie there was driving old Sven around and they stopped at the beach to check out the goomahs.

Men’s fashion doesn’t change much in 60 years.

    Admiral Janeway…crack me up…hahaha..

Christopher…gabbagoal sangwiches…know anyplace in the hood where we can get good gabbagoal? Ha…no one’s gonna have a clue what we’re talking about…

Jan: Alas, despite the bright star of Salumi, Seattle is sorely lacking when it comes to a cohesive Italian-American community that compares with the likes of San Francisco’s North Beach, Boston’s North End or New York City’s Arthur Avenue in the Bronx (Manhattan’s Little Italy having devolved into merely a tourist trap). That said, I’m fairly sure Armandino Batali does do a cappacola. Not sure if you can get it in the form of a sangwich though.

I’ve never been to Salumi, but I’ve made his Italian meatloaf quite a few times…found the recipe in Bon Appetit…and it is absolutely the most wonderful, fattening experience that one can have…geez, there’s a whole pound of whole milk mozzerella in it..melded with Italian sausage ( I like hot myself), ground beef, sundried tomatoes…mmmm…just killer…I’ll have to go by there…

Sorry, comment time is over.
