West Seattle weather watch: Spots of snow

snow2.jpg

As some comments have pointed out here, parts of West Seattle got a dusting of snow early this morning. Certainly a spotty snowfall — the photo above is barely a block east of us, along 42nd in Upper Fauntleroy, but there’s nothing on our street surface, just a thin layer on the car tops. Forecast calls for more tonight. 8:55 AM P.S. Looking ahead — a city news release reminds us that if you have a “street-condition emergency,” the number for reporting it is 386.1218.

Quick! Someone call Jim Forman! It’s WINTER STORM ’08!!!!!

  • RobertSeattle January 28, 2008 (8:27 am)

I noticed this peculiar “spotting” of snow as well. Very strange!

It was really weird this morning. I looked out all my windows and the was absolutely nothing. I walk across the street to the bus stop and realize that the side street had a dusting on the sidewalk on one side of the street, but not the other. And a neighbor had a dusting on their walk to the house, but no one else did.

The bus, however, was a mess (54X) – presumably because it’s coming from the north where the snow really is? When I arrived for the bus, it was apparent that the last one had not arrived – lots more people waiting (who I’d seen waiting there 10 min. prior out the window. When the 118 came and had seats, I just jumped on it to get downtown. Someone on the bus said that they had heard an announcement that all 54/55 drivers should pick up their handsets, and the 118 driver had no idea where the 54X was, so something’s up. Glad I didn’t wait.

The first #22 of the morning was 30 minutes late today as well, but we were told that the bus had mechanical difficulties. I assumed it was weather-related since it’s coming from the south so who knows? Odd that the rest of the buses were really late as well. There was no snow at the Junction or in Sodo, but I hear that Capital Hill and Green Lake received a few inches so that’s probably why Metro is delayed. Check the tracker if you can so you can avoid standing outside freezing for 30 minutes like I did this morning!

i am ready for a snow day. we need at least one this year right?

  • Sue January 28, 2008 (9:11 am)

k, the person who decides our snowdays would probably strap on snowshoes and walk 20 miles in a blizzard to get into the office and declare that yes, it’s easy to get in, so the office is not closed. :)

sue-that is soooo true. i grew up in illinois where it took a foot of snow to close schools. i so enjoy that 2 inches can shut us down sometimes. i am just having wishful thinking. it’s monday and all.

This snowfall localized “spotting” is interesting. I wonder if it has to do with different materials underground. Maybe places where there is rock ledge or clay below are more apt to freeze versus organic matter/soil.

Watch out for patches of ice out there – took a bit of a spill on my bike rounding the sidewalk at the corner of the bridge off-ramp to Harbor Ave on my way to ActivSpace.

I say *LET IT SNOW!!* It’s not winter without atleast ONE BIG SNOW.

  • Rick January 28, 2008 (10:17 am)

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! I had 38 flakes that hung out on my truck at Morgan for 2 whole hours! Wheee, get out the sled! Where is Parka Boy when ya need him?

My 125 bus didn’t come and there was hardly a dusting up in Highland park/Westwood. Co-workers of mine report 5 inches in the north end. I work downtown and there is absolutely zilch. Of course, KING 5 labels it the January Snowstrom. I just have to snort. Snow? What snow?

  • Jessica January 28, 2008 (10:30 am)

Here it comes! Admiral District is getting dumped on by what looks like a hail/snow hybrid. I’m sure it’ll stop soon, but for now it is coming down pretty consistently and covering the Safeway parking lot.

  • add January 28, 2008 (10:40 am)

And here on Gatewood hill – nothing. But I can see the dark clouds hovering over the north end…

  • Sue January 28, 2008 (10:41 am)

I’m downtown, watching the dark clouds rolling in ominously . . .

  • Jessica January 28, 2008 (10:45 am)

I can also see all the panic shoppers rolling in ominously to the Safeway parking lot…hehehe.

  • Sue January 28, 2008 (10:48 am)

Pretty heavy snow downtown now (Seneca & Third), but nothing sticking (yet).

  • Mr. JT January 28, 2008 (10:51 am)

Sue…It’s sticking here at 5th and University all the roofs are white !

  • Delivery Dude January 28, 2008 (11:53 am)

They’re calling for more “snow” tonight through tomorrow.

  • WSB January 28, 2008 (12:01 pm)

That was just a heavy snow shower – we walked out of the courthouse (where we checked in on the Dillard/Coxwell trial, about to add more details to that update) around 10:40 and right into it. Icy “flakes” too, not happy little fluffy flakes. Luckily it didn’t stick while we were driving around those downtown hills trying to get to another newsgathering stop …

  • Bobo January 28, 2008 (12:05 pm)

OH NO..IT’S SNOWING IN SEATTLE..THE WORLDS COMING TO AN END. HOW HORRIBLE!!

  • charla January 28, 2008 (12:16 pm)

Report from the hinterlands: I’m on the dread east side (Redmon) and, as we traveled here this morning, the snow got more and more pronounced and now I CAN SEE SNOW ON THE GROUND from my office window. If I didn’t know better, I’d think I was back in Ioway! :-)

There was no traffic on the way from Admiral, across the bridge and over 90. Radio voices claimed people were “staying home waiting for it to melt.” Looks like that may be later in the week.

I attempted to drive to work this morning in snohomish county. When I got to Lynnwood, the snow driving conditions were scary dangerous-limited visibility which caused me to miss my exit-I couldn’t see the road where my exit was since it was covered with snow. I turned around at 164th and headed home. The exit to I5S was blanketed with snow. If I had stopped, I probably would have spun my wheels and my car off the road.

  • Suits are not boring January 28, 2008 (12:50 pm)

Just a note on the bus situation – as a commuter on the oft delayed 55 – it turns into the 5 and when it snows at Northgate the 5 has a problem coming down, which causes 45 minute delays. Just a head’s up for anyone planning on the 55 today or tomorrow

  • Gina January 28, 2008 (2:22 pm)

And for all the stranded 56/56E/57 riders-those busses come from Ballard/Fremont.

So why was there only 1 bus between 7-8 AM this morning on the route? And a regular single bus, at that? A bus that was overfilled before it arrived at California from Alki? There must have been about 100 people left at the bus stops that we passed.

  • Barbara January 28, 2008 (3:50 pm)

I don’t get snow days, if I stay home because of the weather then I have to give up a personal day, so I don’t really care if it snows or not. I take the bus and work downtown, would much rather use a personal day on something other than snow.

Sorry, comment time is over.
