WEST SEATTLE COYOTES: Two sightings

Two reader-sent coyote sightings – first one, around 8:30 this morning, near Fire Station 32 (37th SW/SW Alaska):

The reader said their dog noticed the coyote first. Meantime, this one is from Rob, a coyote seen about a week ago near The Kenney:

We’ve been publishing coyote reports for 18 years, archived here, for awareness, not alarm. (Learn about coyotes here.)

I often hear people say that coyotes were here long before we were. Actually, that’s not true at all. Historically,  coyotes were desert and prairie animals; only existing on the eastern side of our state. They expanded west of the Cascades after the eradication of wolves created an ecological vacuum. Wolves will naturally kill all coyotes in their territory rather than compete with them. I’m not saying they’re not cool and we shouldn’t try to keep them here, but they’re not native to this area.

Sorry, comment time is over.
