Three ways to be greener

Three things of environmental note:

FREE E-CYCLING: This isn’t happening in West Seattle but it’s not far, and it’s free: 9 am-3 pm tomorrow, Safeco Field parking structure at Occidental & Edgar Martinez (map), you can bring certain electronic items for free recycling: specifically “any make or model of computers and related equipment, including monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, laptops, gaming consoles, and mobile entertainment devices.”

authentichome.jpgGREEN PAINT: The folks who run Authentic Home, the bright blue interior-design shop (AH-provided photo at left) that relocated to The Junction 2 months back, have a new line of environmentally smarter paint, described thusly: “Our new paint is Zero VOC and solvent-free and environmentally responsible. All 60 of our colors can be made with Authentic Home COLOR Paint GREEN and remain true to the colors and vibrancy in our original low VOC paint.” We’ll confess, we had to look up “VOC” (here’s the explanation).

SUSTAINABLE WEST SEATTLE: Want to get an early start on a New Year’s resolution for all of West Seattle? Be at the Camp Long lodge tomorrow, 9 am-2 pm, for the Sustainable West Seattle Open Space Forum addressing “How do we make West Seattle more sustainable in 2008?” Free breakfast and beverages (bring your own mug and utensils, in the sustainability spirit). don’t be mean to us, we’re sleep-deprived. we didn’t want to just use “as follows.”

Microsoft, Dell and Intechra are offering free computer recycling from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Safeco Field’s Safeco Parking Plaza at Edgar Martinez Way near Occidental Avenue South. To mark America Recycles Day, the collections event will accept any make or model of computers and related equipment, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice and laptops. Gaming consoles and mobile entertainment devices also will be accepted. Electronic items not accepted include televisions, stereo equipment, cellphones and appliances.

Participants are asked to remove all data from their computer’s hard drive and any removable media such as disks, PC cards, flash drives and CD-ROM’s. Drop-off is free, and all equipment will be refurbished or recycled. The first 500 participants will receive free energy-saving, compact fluorescent light bulbs.

If they wanna write “described thusly”, they’ll write “described thusly”. Nothing wrong with that. ;-) At least this isn’t a totally vanilla, dumbed-down site. You Go WSB!!

    Here you go Thomas!
Thusly was introduced in the 19th century as an alternative to thus in sentences such as Hold it thus or He put it thus. It appears to have first been used by humorists, who may have been echoing the speech of poorly educated people straining to sound stylish. The word has subsequently gained some currency in educated usage, but it is still often regarded as incorrect. In formal writing thus can still be used as in the example above; in other styles this way, like this, and other such expressions are more natural.

Does anyone have 1st hand experience with “envirnomentally smarter paint”? I’d love to hear about coverage, color match, etc. I haven’t been asked about it from clients yet but I’d like to be able to give an example w/o re-painting our house. I’ve gotten the sales pitch (ZERO smell, TOTAL coverage). But I’m not sure if I can buy that (no shade to AH… I’d just like to know real world w/o re-painting our house).

The Fauntleroy Y just finished some interior painting in our Weight & Cardio rooms. Our painter used Miller Paint’s Acro Pure line (http://www.millerpaint.com/Portals/0/pdfs/AcroPure.pdf)
No noticeable smell, excellent coverage, great colors, but I can’t tell you about wear and tear for a little while.

Sorry, comment time is over.
