So we’re not “grown up” without haute cuisine?

The Stranger is the latest to gush over Beato, under the headline “West Seattle Grows Up.”

Ate at Beato a few days ago – food is delicious but the portions are MINISCULE! We joked about having Pagliacci’s deliver a pizza. Prices are high for such small portions……

The author states, “If you didn’t feel like ogling the glittering skyline over a plate of king crab legs with the tourists and prom kids at Salty’s, you were pretty much forced to venture into the city.” That may be true….but “forced” is a bit strong IMO. I’m new to the area (1 year), and have become a rabid west-seattlite like most others. I love it here. But part of what makes WS so great is the short jaunt to other parts of the city, while feeling far away when we do stay here. That said, Beato is next on the list…but we’ll never stop heading out to new dining destinations outside of WS.

I’m sorry, but I can’t get excited over “the whole city…traversing the sweeping concrete arc of the West Seattle Bridge to visit.” Let’em stay on their own side of the concrete arc, grump, grump.

I quote “The osteria and wine bar occupies a nondescript, small building that was formerly the home of two small, nondescript restaurants that didn’t last long in the wasteland of real-estate offices and apartment complexes between the Alaska and Admiral junctions. ” So…Ovio Bistro was /is non-descript? It didn’t fail…it moved…to a better location. I guess I simply have reason to doubt people who don’t get their facts straight. I have not been to Beato, so I really can’t give an opinion…but…snob appeal is a term that comes to mind. Maybe my tastes are simply more “pedestrian”…but we have numerous good restaurants here in West Seattle. And the reports of high prices for “miniscule” portions keeps me away. If I’m paying those prices, I’d better damned well be full when I walk out…again, just my opinion :)

LOL at Katherine, “Let’em stay on their own side of the concrete arc”!

If I’m paying top dollar for a meal, I’d rather go to Jak’s or Ovio and not leave hungry.

Bayou..I couldn’t agree more…I just added up their bill…it was $109, before he even mentioned the 3rd, 4th, and 5th wine…for 2 people…that’s outrageous. The reviewer calls it “unpretentious’…somehow, I don’t believe that. I had a lovely meal , well prepared, at Circa the other night. With alcohol, the tab was more like 42 bucks. Perhaps I’ll miss out on the wonderful things that Beato might have, but my wallet likes Circa more :)

I take issue with the mention of 2 previous restaurants that didn’t last – Ovio is certainly doing well, and running O2 was just too much. I spent many evenings at O2 enjoying the staff, the food, and the full bar – which sadly, Beato doesn’t have. (Need vodka!)
I’m sure that space housed a few others over the years, but the author doesn’t make any distinction. It would be nice if he did.

West 5!! Matador!! Happy hour!!! :D

  • Eric April 5, 2007 (2:55 pm)

I wouldn’t call Jak’s or Ovio “Top Dollar” dining. Both are very reasonably priced when compared to comperable restaurants elsewhere in the city.

    Never mind Mashikos and Phoenicia?

I’m thinking I don’t want to grow up

Have you lot been to La Rustica?? Yum,yum…try the lamb shank, the bread, the vino, oh hell just go:))

  • Bill April 5, 2007 (5:34 pm)

La Rustica just didn’t do it for me the one time I was there. I think it deserves another chance though… Bizarro in Wallingford is our Italian place of choice right now.

  • eileen April 5, 2007 (9:05 pm)

La Rustica is awesome – Ovio, Endolyn joe’s and on and on…I agree…we’ll keep our “wasteland” to ourselves!

  • eric April 5, 2007 (9:59 pm)

I’ve been to bizzaro once and la rustica more times than I can count. Save yourself the drive to wallingford (unless you are going to tangletown)

  • The House April 5, 2007 (11:53 pm)

How could you not like La Rustica….it’s such a hidden gem! My wife ate at this Beato last week and said it was good, but she had to mortgage the small plate that she got…wine was good too.
If they don’t serve beer and let me come in wearing blue jeans, they can beato off.

  • Jiggers April 6, 2007 (7:52 am)

Hey Eric, Shhhhh…don’t say how reasonable or cheap they are.

  • Cruiser April 6, 2007 (11:39 am)

OH Bill,Bill.. the best fish n chips is at the place where the water taxi lands on our side!! Trust me,try it!!

  • Jan April 6, 2007 (11:56 am)

Cruiser….I’ve heard nothing but good things about the food at the place by the water taxi..I’ll have to meander down there soon. And, House, LOL….

  • Bill April 6, 2007 (11:03 am)

Before I get e-dogpiled, I didn’t say I didn’t like LaRustica…just wasn’t wowed by it. I will say we got some bad news earlier that evening that probably put a damper on the experience. We know the owner of Bizzaro and have gotten acquainted with the chef and some servers, so they treat us right. We’ll definitely try LaRustica again…soon. Last night we tried Sunfish for fish n chips…not impressed. For fast f&c, Spud is better. The old guy at Sunfish messed up our order and the fries were sh*te mush. It’s tough to beat the f&c at Elliot Bay and Circa though… :D

  • Bill April 6, 2007 (1:05 pm)

Cruiser…thanks for the recommendo. We’ll try it! My wife was just saying last night how excited she is now that the H2O taxi is firing back up…

My family of 4 adults took me to Beato for my birthday. I thought the service was mediocre (though the waiter had flair) and the food was just too little for too much ($327 for 4 people). I didn’t think it was anything exceptional and next time I’ll use my $ more wisely for a day at the spa.

  • Jen April 7, 2007 (8:27 am)

Beato is somewhat pricey, but I’ve also paid more for a meal. The food we had was good, not great, with the exception of the house-made sausage, which was incredible. I love eating out and trying new places, and IMO there are just too many other restaurants in Seattle that I want to visit to go back to Beato for quite a while.

  • Tonya April 9, 2007 (8:41 am)

    Hello Everyone –

West Seattle is now home for me and has been for a few months. I love it here and am kicking myself for waiting so long to move here!

I live just a few blocks down from La Rustica and I must say I love that place. Not only for the food but for that incredible smell that meanders down the street to fill up my place with the most enticing aromas you can imagine.

I’ve never been disappointed going to La Rustica.

Beato is on my list next week.

  • scott April 9, 2007 (7:05 pm)

La Rustica is one of WS’s hidden gems. I can count on one hand the times I’ve ordered off the menu, because their specials were so awesome. Let the unwashed masses mope about coming over the WS Bridge. More room at La Rustica for us!

  • mike April 14, 2007 (10:37 am)

I, for one, don’t mind paying a little bit extra for food that really wows me. Beato’s food does just that.

Sorry, comment time is over.
