Followup: 3 of 4 suspects charged in restaurant-owner holdup

gavel.jpgThree of the four suspects arrested in connection with the knifepoint holdup of the owner of Yummy Teriyaki are now charged with first-degree robbery – while the fourth, whose release from jail (after posting bond on $25,000 bail) we reported yesterday, is not charged so far, but remains under investigation. Since the three are charged as adults, we are identifying them: 17-year-old Bashir Mohamed, 16-year-old Burhan Mohamed, both Tukwila residents, and 16-year-old Abdisalam Yusef, a West Seattle resident. Prosecutors have requested their bail be set at $50,000 each. Court documents say Bashir Mohamed has cases pending for domestic-violence assault, malicious mischief and criminal trespass, while the other two have “no known criminal history.” However, the documents add, “… they are charged with a violent crime which appears to have been premeditated, as the victim was ambushed as he was closing his shop and in possession of the day’s cash. The victim’s credit card was used between the time it was stolen and the time the defendants were apprehended.” Notably to other stories we’ve covered, the documents also mention “an attempted purse snatch around the same time, same location, and with suspects whose description matches these defendants.” It’s not clear which incident that refers to – we will check tomorrow; besides the Gatewood purse-snatch attempt reported in this story today (which happened shortly before the Junction holdup, but more than a mile away), we also published word last week of a purse-snatch attempt closer to The Junction. As for the three charged suspects’ status, King County Prosecuting Attorney Office spokesperson Dan Donohoe says the three are scheduled to appear in court October 20th to answer the charges.

    Outstanding

Time for parents to serve time with their kids when they are not adults. Maybe then they’d raise them a little better. Pathetic.

amazing – 17 yo, and already domestic violence.

Amazing. With all the crime in West Seattle, people will start arming themselves. Good or bad. Have to wait and see.

  • 37Ray October 7, 2009 (8:54 pm)

Many are probably armed already. All I say to that is, take some basic self defense classes before/while one is rushing out to buy that “home protection” gun, and if/when one gets one, please go enroll in a serious firearm training class. I believe SPD themselves may even be offering one at their firing range. I would consider reaching for the gun a last resort though(!) there are other things you can do in “most” cases before it ever gets to ‘blast em’… but if owning one makes one feel safer that is why it is legal to do so… just my 2c

screw it–if they are this far along just blast em!–seriously–no one cares, you will be doing society a favor.

uh, no, not true. There is a fellow on trial already for having that attitude. Guys were stealing from his car, he confronted them, they ran and he shot one in the back and killed him. The charge is manslaughter.

  • 37Ray October 8, 2009 (10:25 am)

Dhg is obviously correct. There is no shortage of cases where a victim/property-owner have fired at a ‘perp’ and ended up being the one in court defending their actions against jailtime. Don’t be that person. If you ever are that person, there are nonprofits out there that assist in defense of legitimate self-defense claims, however, even they will tell you, it is a thousand times better to just leave the gun in the holster under ANY circumstance short of clear cut being shot at by someone etc and preferably with many witnesses to attest that you had no alternative whatsoever. This is not the wild west anymore, even if the bad guys act like it is, it’s not. That is why we must conduct ourselves differently, else we become no better…

I completely agree with Dale. You will be doing society a favor to remove them. We have 6.7 billion people on this planet. So what if three ‘adults’ get killed while they were robbing someone. It’s their damn fault for trying to take the easy path through life at someone elses expense. Their families will miss them heavily for a year and then they will fade away and be forgotten…..that’s life. Oh…and make sure to shot them in the front and not the back.

Everyone is entitled to their view (thats what these comments are for right) however my whole thrust, as someone non-politically “gun neutral”, is, if you are going to exercize your right to own one and to fire one in self defense, by the same token, you better own up then and be damn sure and responsible with that power. I am just saying. Who here wants to see the “good guy” go to prison for doing something in self defense that is at the same time not legally defensible?? No one, I think. You have to study all your alternatives with extreme care when turning to “firearm discharge” especially in town! There are simply TOO MANY THINGS that can “go wrong” you can not allow yourself to “go off half cocked” no matter how tempting the bad guy may be making that. It is not legally viable defense to just say the guy p_ssed you off. Your life has to clearly demonstratably and defensibly be in danger (not, “I thought…”) in the potential eyes of a jury of peers… if it were to go there. Please people if you are just venting frustration in your comments that is one thing but in actual practice if anyone here is considering “going vigilante” in WS, please think twice, three times, its not worth having the good guys go to jail, that would not be helping the community goals in any way at all. Just my opinions…

I exercise my second amendment right every day and encourage other responsible citizens to do so as well. However, I do reiterate the importance of taking some style of gun saftey/knowlege course.

Wow. Its getting harder to tell the crazies apart. Or easier. -g/ng-

Even with gun safety classes, this kind of thing can happen:
Homeowner Shot by Police While Holding Intruder at Gunpoint

  • andy parypa October 9, 2009 (6:02 am)

I am in total favor of citizens being armed. I am. However, one not only needs to be trained in how to shoot, but most importantly, when to shoot. That is if you want to stay out of jail. The guy who shot the car burglar in the back blew it. After the perp started running he was no threat to the car owner. If you use a gun in self defense it had better be because your life was in danger, or at least, in danger of grave bodily harm. Also, be prepared to shell out a whole lot of money to pay your lawyer.

  • Rob October 9, 2009 (7:03 am)

Washington State has no self defense law that allows someone to shoot at a person legally.

I was shot in the leg by a stray bullet 3 years ago in Burien by a homeowner firing at people stealing from his parked car. All of them went to jail including the homeowner, which now has his gun rights removed, served 18 months and paid me a hefty settlement.

I just think its sad that all of you so called humans feel the need to destroy these children or fault the parents. It really takes a village to raise kids these days and all of you are villagers. Lets get some affordable preventative programs for our children at an early age. I remember a scared straight program here years ago. They do deserve punishment, but death? I wouldn’t want their blood on my hands and neither would most of you if you have a soul. Seattle needs to figure out how to help our children not be juvenile delinquents, instead of profiting of of their delinquency. WE ALL NEED TO CARE

  • 37Ray October 15, 2009 (4:46 pm)

For the record I was speaking in general, not about “destroying” these “children”… fwiw…

Sorry, comment time is over.
