West Seattle Crime Watch: 2 cases from Gatewood

First one is a purse-snatching attempt; second one, a burglary – for both stories, read on:

First, thanks to Desiree for suggesting we look into what she heard was a “mugging” on Saturday night. Lt. Steve Paulsen at the Southwest Precinct looked into it for us, and here’s the case that turned up: Around 9 pm Saturday, someone came up behind a woman walking in the 6700 block of 40th SW (map) and tried to steal her purse. In the ensuing struggle, both wound up on the ground; the victim screamed and kept trying to fight off the attacker. The scream brought out a neighbor, who yelled, which led the suspect to take off – WITHOUT the purse. No arrest so far; the would-be purse-snatcher was described only as “black male, late teens.”

And this came in from a WSB’er who asked not to be identified:

Gatewood Neighborhood – Back doors kicked in, coin jar taken

Break-in to report on SW Elmgrove Street. Occurred between 9 am and 4:30 pm on Tuesday October 6th. Lots of damage to two doors. Rooms had dresser and desk drawers as well as closet doors left ajar. Books and other items knocked over, lots of things rummaged through. Coin jar taken. Police think they were probably kids who were after cash and small valuables, and they got startled by neighbor, sound or mail carrier? Word of warning from nice police officer who took report: crime goes way up when school is out – between 2 and 5 in the afternoon. That’s a really sad statistic. :-( So be alert and stay safe out there WS Friends and Neighbors.

For the latest trends and a chance to talk with local police leadership face-to-face, be at the next West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting, 7 pm Tuesday 10/20, Southwest Precinct meeting room.

I am impressed with the purse lady. Good work! It seems like a lot of these crimes lately are kids who are just getting started. I like to see people fighting back (when appropriate).

Speaking of crime being way up when the kids are out, there is a solution for some! Madison’s YMCA partners are hosting events for Madison’s students to attend on all of the non-district-wide early release days that Madison has this year. Parents just need to sign their kids up. Call Rashida or Katie at 252-9200 for more information.

Break-in on the 7700 block of 46th Ave SW. We used to think we had a buffer from the more crime-ridden neighborhoods, but no more…

“Black male, late teens”. Seems to be a pattern here.

west seattleite – the key here is that “parents just need to sign their kids up”. That means parents need to parent, and one gets the feeling that is not happening.

Neighborhoods beware…if what the nice police said is true, Friday is a day off for SPS..an in service day for teachers. Make sure your doors/windows are locked, hide your valuables, and take them out of your cars.

Good tips on where they look – the obvious places where I have my stuff. Hope my dog bites the crap out of them if they try.

I can’t believe this purse-snatching happened in Gatewood. And at 9:00 pm? Lovely- sometimes I think my family would be safer if we moved back to Capital Hill. Lived there for years with no problems at all, then I move to WS and my car gets broken into repeatedly and I worry all day that my house will be too. And yesterday evening I saw very shady behavior happening by WS Elementary- several youths looked like they were up to no good, hiding on a staircase doing god knows what, all while little kids were practicing soccer all around. I hate having to be on the defensive so much when I just want to enjoy my neighborhood.

Yeah, we moved here a few years ago to West Seattle, I am thinking about putting my house up for sale soon, this is not the place for me. I would rather rent in a nicer neighborhood than own in a crime ridden area.

Sorry, comment time is over.
