West Seattle Crime Watch: Open door, stolen purse

Out of the WSB inbox, from John, who says this happened between noon and 1 pm today:

Just a warning to other West Seattleites. My wife and I were both home (Oregon & 39th) [map] with the front door open letting the sun in. Someone walked into our house and stole my wife’s purse from a chair close to the front door. Didn’t see anyone suspicious around. Everyone be on the lookout for weirdos.

John, of course, called the police, and says they “mentioned an incident yesterday in the same area.”

Wow! I’m sorry! That’s pretty brazen!

Wow! I live on 42nd and oregan and Friday night right before bedtime (11ish) I went to close my kitchen window…and there was a man with a ponytail and backpack standing at my back gate staring at me! I stared back for a minute because it took me a minute to register the wierdness…then sent my dogs outside…and left the poor mutts out there the rest of the night!! Freaked me out!!!

I can’t believe that Seattle’s Mayor lives here, yet crime here is so bad that you can’t let your guard down for a minute.
Why isn’t more being done?! Why do we have to live always expecting the worst, or risk losing property or – God forbid – suffering personal harm?
This was a nice neighborhood (California and Findlay) 9 years ago, when I moved here from Alki to get away from the noise and “punk pollution;” now, I have whores brazenly walking into the properties adjacent to mine to relieve themselves on my neighbors’ properties, and young punks walking around doing what I can best describe as “hazing” anyone that they come across.
If Nickels’ inaction while this problem has grown progressively worse under his watch isn’t reason to boot him out of office, I don’t know what is.

i think that it’s a big problem that may take us to fix… the mayor can’t control who’s doing what. (i am neither a supporter or non supporter of MN) i feel like more people being dilligent, more people being outside- let people in your neighborhood know you’re all looking out for each other. call the cops more- make sure everything is logged.

the person in this story- well there’s really nothing they could have done- i don’t know how often i leave my front door open to have a nice breeze- ugh it really stinks.

the sad truth is that most of us are too busy to have a night or two a week to contribute to a neighborhood watch co op…. and shoot- it can be scary- who knows what ppl are willing to do!

Yes, it was scary when my wife asked me if I’ve seen her purse (that was RIGHT there) and realizing that someone was in our house. What if I came in the room right when that person was there and confronted them? What if they had a weapon?
Supporting our neighbors is a BIG one. When I asked our neighbor to watch our house when we went up to Home Depot to get new locks, they said yes but were lounging in their back yard when we got back. Big (sarcastic) thanks!
I told the police officer that there seems to be a big upswing of crime in this area. He told me that there must be something that is attracting crime to this area. What does that mean? My neighborhood hasn’t really changed since we bought 3 years ago.
Now we’re off to replace the car locks & keyless entry buttons $$$

So sorry to hear about this! I just wrote a message to WSB about OUR break in on Friday evening, right up the street from you (45th and Spokane). Just went out for a little while after dinner and came home to find that they came in through an open back window and took electronics, jewelry, purse, etc. Then went down to the Shell at Morgan Junction to buy gas using my credit card. I feel like we have a number of vigilant neighbors, but even that’s not enough if people are being SO brazen about just coming in during broad daylight and when you’re home!! FYI–police were very responsive and went down to the gas station to look at surveillence video.

Sorry, comment time is over.
