West Seattle snow aftermath: Anybody still waiting on UPS?

The inquiry we sent to the UPS media team last week just got answered – so we’re asking them, for starters, if their company considers this area to be all caught up, but if you know of any specific cases where someone’s still waiting – in West Seattle – please leave a comment or e-mail us.

1:44 PM UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who has left comments and sent e-mail about missing packages. We talked by phone with Ronna Charles Branch in United Parcel Service media relations. “Looks like we’re doing a good job today of getting through the packages that have been held,” she said. “We had several trailer loads of packages at multiple locations throughout the Pacific Northwest because we couldnt get through what we HAD sorted. Today in one particular Seattle facility, they’ve gotten through half, meaning they unloaded half the trailers, sorted those (packages), and put them out for delivery.” She said they think they’ll have “everything delivered by the end of the week” – but here’s an important caveat: UPS is closed Wednesday and Thursday (New Year’s Eve-Day). So if you don’t get your package(s) by the end of tomorrow, you won’t be getting them before Friday. No plans to work extra time over the “holiday” to catch up, we asked? No, she said. Also: Air/Express packages are being delivered as priorities – “the ground ones will trickle in by the end of the week,” she said. If you have a question about something you’re awaiting, the hotline is 800-PICK-UPS. We asked the question that some WSB’ers have posed – why did USPS make it to some neighborhoods that UPS has not served? She didn’t have an explanation beyond accessibility and truck size/weight, “being able to get up the terrain.” We also asked about perishable deliveries, since at least one WSB’er brought that up — her advice was to talk with the vendor, rather than UPS, about how compensation/replacement would be handled.

5:37 PM UPDATE: Went out for a drive a little while ago. Just before 5, saw a UPS truck coming off a side street onto Delridge just north of Arco/Home Depot/etc. Thanks for all the comments and notes re: UPS status – we plan to check with UPS again tomorrow to see if there are any additional updates/status reports.

7:36 PM UPDATE: UPS truck sighting just down the block from us (within a block of California/Thistle; map). We saw them during the storm, too – including one week ago, just after sunset, same time Seattle Public Utilities reps stopped by for an in-person interview at WSB HQ.

10:14 PM UPDATE: Got a message via Facebook (where we are WS Blog) that someone in Arbor Heights received a package after 9:30 tonight.

waiting on fed ex. was supposed to be delivered on 24th, but was not. not even delivered on 26th.

UPS on the other hand made it here on the 24th.

  • Sue December 29, 2008 (10:14 am)

My inlaws called asking why we never acknowledged the christmas gift they sent from Amazon.com that was to come via UPS. We had no idea we were expecting one, but apparently it is late. They are out of town so don’t have a tracking number to see when it was supposed to be here. Hopefully it (whatever it is) will show up this week.

  • pam December 29, 2008 (10:19 am)

we are still waiting on at least 10 packages… things that we ordered or others shipped to us, most things on the 15th but no later than the 18th of december. (and shipped as 2 day just to be safe.) after starting to get a little panicky on dec. 23rd, we rescheduled delivery so that we could pick the items up on december 24th at the ups center on 7th ave, but were then told that there were over 30,000 items that still needed to be scanned through and they had no way of knowing where ours were… a big mess really!! I can’t imagine that they would tell you they are all caught up with this area.

  • Yo December 29, 2008 (10:21 am)

Waiting on our wedding photos (DVD copies) that were to be delivered on Friday 12/19.

  • coffee geek December 29, 2008 (10:21 am)

Package meant to arrive the 22nd or 23rd is “out for delivery” today.

  • MargL December 29, 2008 (10:22 am)

My UPS package ‘shipped’ on the 18th has been Out for Delivery since the 22nd. Every time I look at the status page they’ve pushed the rescheduled delivery date another day. It’s marked as TBD today but I’m not holding my breath.

  • Oliver December 29, 2008 (10:27 am)

Still waiting for presents for my kids from grandma that were supposed to arrive before Christmas.

  • vmd December 29, 2008 (10:27 am)

We’re still waiting for FedEx packages that were shipped on 12/22 next day air.

  • Kathy December 29, 2008 (10:29 am)

We are the same as others. We can track our UPS package to see it has been in Seattle since the 22nd. We have asked to pick it up ourselves, but were told that it has not been unloaded from the shipping container yet.

  • DP December 29, 2008 (10:30 am)

I’m still waiting for 2 packages from UPS, both were to be delivered 12/18.

  • hopey December 29, 2008 (10:35 am)

YES. I was specifically told by a UPS phone representative that my package was “on the truck” on December 27th, even though the website did not reflect this fact. That same day, FedEx — who does not normally deliver on Saturdays — delivered another package I had been waiting less time to receive.
    .
I am now waiting for THREE packages to be delivered from UPS. One should have arrived long before Christmas.
    .
When both USPS and FedEx can make it down my street, I find it completely non-credible that UPS cannot also deliver packages.
    .
TR, email me if you want my exact address, and tracking numbers…

  • Tracy December 29, 2008 (10:35 am)

I am waiting on a UPS package which arrived in Seattle on 12/18. The last statement on the tracking is 12/19 Emergency conditions beyond UPS control. I have a little girl who would really like her Christmas present.

  • Dartanyon December 29, 2008 (10:35 am)

I too am still waiting for a package that was to be delivered on the 24th. I went as far as to drive around looking for the UPS person from 6-7:30 on Christmas eve. It says it is supposed to be rescheduled for today … but we are still waiting for our trash pickup from 2 Fridays ago, so I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • Renee December 29, 2008 (10:36 am)

We got a couple of packages from both Fed Ex and UPS on friday here in Arbor Heights. Still waiting on one package, but I don’t consider it late because we ordered it really late (right before Christmas).

  • Roger December 29, 2008 (10:42 am)

Still awaiting three UPS packages here.
Picked up 2 at FedEx in Georgetown on Christmas Eve.

  • jbar December 29, 2008 (10:44 am)

Still waiting on Fedex — shows “at the facility” delay beyond our control. It was due the 24th.

  • Mike Rutter December 29, 2008 (10:47 am)

Still waiting on three packages from UPS and two from FedEx. All were supposed to be delivered on/before the the 24th. I live on 36th/Alaska.

  • RobertSeattle December 29, 2008 (10:48 am)

I saw a UPS minivan at 7 AM at 36th and Stevens this morning! Whoa! Check your doorsteps!

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (10:56 am)

Still waiting on three from UPS. One is same as Tracy’s above (maybe locked in same truck!) with tracking showing last statement on 12/19 – emergency conditions beyond UPS control. Another scheduled for window ending 12/23 shows that it is out for delivery at 2AM today. Third is a Christmas gift from the east coast – ironically from a UPS employee – so we can’t see tracking ourselves. It doesn’t sound like they are even close to being caught up.

  • ellenater December 29, 2008 (11:01 am)

Waiting for one, says “out for delivery”. It went to Hermiston, OR during the storm. Sadly, it was my hubby’s presents. Hope it comes today!

  • Leslie December 29, 2008 (11:05 am)

We are waiting for 3 packages from UPS that were supposed to be delivered by Dec 18th. We checked our tracking numbers everyday from Dec 18th on and the date just kept being moving forward to the next day. On Christmas Eve when our online tracking report still said our packages were scheduled for delivery that day but they had not arrived by 3pm, my husband called UPS. After three calls in three hours, UPS confirmed that our packages were not on a truck but were at their 7th Ave S. distribution center. He decided to go down and pick them up himself but when he got there, the UPS employee looked up our tracking numbers and frowned. Apparently they got so backlogged with packages that they had to put them in storage trailers and could not even tell us which trailers ours were in. The employee told us that we would probably get our packages around Jan. 2. We were able to rearrange our gift giving so that “Santa’s” were covered. I can understand delivery being delayed, but I would have appreciated getting the straight scoop from the beginning. Plan B would have had more options on December 20th…

  • stb December 29, 2008 (11:11 am)

Still waiting for several packages that had guaranteed delivery by Christmas (both UPS & FedEx). Tracking shows one has been in town since before Christmas. FedEx package shows still in Portland. Unfortunately the missing packages are the “big” Christmas gifts for my 16 year old daughter and my husband. Hopefully they can have Christmas by New Year’s.

  • maverick202 December 29, 2008 (11:17 am)

My company was expecting a very important package shipped through UPS (Overnight). It’s not delivered yet. I can understand that because of horrible road conditions, UPS drivers can’t be fast. Atleast they should provide some facilities, if the customer wants to pickup the package at the storage location. I have called the UPS agent and she is so insensitive. She said that I cannot pickup the package from Redmond shipping center because there are too many packages.

I cannot pickup because there are too many packages, is completly unacceptable for a company like UPS. So, can we conclude from this that UPS can only deliver under perfect weather conditions or if the number of packages in a particular location is less than a particular number.
I will try to avoid UPS especially during winter and holiday seasons (since the number of packages may cross threshold that they can handle).

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (11:22 am)

Anyone know if there is any recourse for perishables that may have been sent with dry ice for instance? I’m especially thinking of packages that were “given up on” – locked in storage without attempt of delivery for a week.

  • Max December 29, 2008 (11:23 am)

On Friday, we dropped off a UPS package for pickup at the Admiral Junction Mailing Center. They are still waiting for UPS to arrive – today, they think.

  • AE December 29, 2008 (11:25 am)

I am waiting on a package that was supposed to be delivered on the 22nd and never came and by the 24th they said my package was damaged and was going back to the sender but today the 29th it says it’s out for delivery. So I guess I’m getting a damaged package.

  • Nate's Mom December 29, 2008 (11:25 am)

Still waiting for UPS to deliver “Santa’s gift” for our 2 year old. It has been out for delivery since 12/19. I’m not to happy with UPS right now but very happy with the USPS who did made it up our snowy hill with lots of gifts & cards!

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (11:25 am)

Might I add that I hope those rotting Omaha Steaks are enhancing the atmosphere at the UPS facility…but without permeating others packages :(

  • Brandon December 29, 2008 (11:28 am)

I think we share many of the same similar issues. We had a UPS package that arrived for delivery on the 22nd, 23rd,and 24th and showed on tracking “out for delivery, unable due to weather conditions”. Funny, but we had other UPS drivers deliver packages to us without problem. We even had a late night (around 8:30) delivery on Friday. We called UPS to get info and went down to the 7th Ave DC but our package was stuck in a trailor. It stinks that gifts had to be delayed to little ones for 5 days when its been sitting in a truck for 3. Next year, USPS all the way, we got mail every day. 3 cheers to our mail lady!

Why doesn’t UPS have some AWD backup? How do packages get prioritized for delivery (we got some ground deliveries, but not others)? I’d say UPS gets a black eye this holiday, along with our city government.

  • Krystal December 29, 2008 (11:30 am)

Waiting on UPS, last information on tracking website says delayed from the 23rd. Nothing since then.

  • lonnie December 29, 2008 (11:31 am)

on christmas eve, we were told by ups that there were 70 full ups trucks waiting to be delivered from 12/19 and that we had multiple packages on some of them.

  • nants December 29, 2008 (11:39 am)

OK, I work for one of the above mentioned shipping companies and hae been verbally abused for about 8 or so days and I too have been very incovenienced by the weather…garbage and recycle just sits, icy streets, taking my life in my hands getting to work and believe it or not, I nor anyone in the biz created this snowstorm and are innocent of any wrongdoing…..this time of year we are swamped with pkgs anyway and work hard to stay on top of it, but when there are 2 or 3 days that this freight builds up and we can’t deliver because the streets which should have been plowed weren’t, we are buried even deeper in the freight. We worked very hard to scan everything and stay as organized as possible and even opened all day on Christmas to be available for those who wanted to come pickup their pkgs. Yes, it took a long time to dig some out for some customers, but we did and also extednded our hours to be as available as possible. We did send out weekday pkgs on Sat just to try to get as many pkgs delivered which we couldn’t earlier because of the weather. So, please think about the storm and asking Mayor Nickels to get his city cleaned up in a much more timely manner and then we can deliver your pkgs on time.

  • add December 29, 2008 (11:45 am)

Today received a FedEx ground package from the east coast, shipped on 12/15. Should have arrived on 12/19 (or Mon 12/22 at latest). Glad to have received it!

  • Pat December 29, 2008 (11:47 am)

“OK, I work for one of the above mentioned shipping companies and hae been verbally abused for about 8 or so days and I too have been very incovenienced by the weather”

Garbage is a whole lot different than packages days before Christmas. The mail man showed up every day. What makes them any different from UPS?

  • Nancy December 29, 2008 (11:49 am)

Still waiting for 3 UPS packages that were supposed to be delivered on the 23rd (I paid for expedited shipping). It seems they need an “emergency” plan in West Seattle, i.e. stationing a truck on a main arterial so that we could have met the truck and retrieved them.

  • LB December 29, 2008 (11:58 am)

Still waiting for my UPS shipment due last Tuesday. UPS keeps saying it’s on the truck for delivery then says Delivery Exception due to weather.

Hoping it will arrive today, but UPS is NOT caught up with West Seattle deliveries by any stretch…

  • rockergirl December 29, 2008 (11:58 am)

Still waiting on 4 packages – 1 from FEd Ex which has been in KENT for 10 days! and 3 from UPS which have been delivered from Seattle to Redmond and now have to come back to Seattle! Bummer that the weather played havoc on all of our christmas presents – I printed out pictures to give to my daughter and hubby and will now have to pay for more shipping to get presents to her on east coast!

  • Will December 29, 2008 (11:59 am)

Still waiting too… what really irks me is that with all those waiting, UPS still took the weekend off and let even more packages back up – and despite what they say, those shipped UPS Ground will surely be set aside until the 2day and Overnight ones get sent out.

  • Al December 29, 2008 (12:00 pm)

Waiting for Fed Ex. Package went from AZ to TN to PA. Then to Seattle. Then back to TN. Then back to Seattle. We’re hoping to get it today, well over a week late.

  • add December 29, 2008 (12:04 pm)

UPS Truck Sighting! Heading west on Holly from 39th … hope it’s coming to YOUR house! :)

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (12:05 pm)

nants – all this goes to those creating the faulty system (incl. information to the customers), not those having to carry out the faulty system. I’m sorry you’ve been on the receiving end of some of the frustration. If I were you, I would pass along these comments to those who should be reviewing this event post-mortum so that improvements can be made. IMHO, there is no excuse for leaving packages locked in trucks for a week. If the roads were impassable, all those who weren’t out delivering could have been scanning those packages and at least figuring out what was where.

  • nants December 29, 2008 (12:05 pm)

NAncy, Will definitely bring that up….we did have a truck at the ferry dock for Bainbridge pkgs…Pat, the UPS trucks are much more difficult to get up and down icy streets than those mail cars or trucks and I also know of people here in my hilly area that didn’t get mail, so they weren’t everywhere either. Bottom line, The city officials failed us….the cleanup just plain wasn’t adaquate and the rest fell apart due to that.

  • Huindekmi December 29, 2008 (12:17 pm)

We’re still waiting for one package via UPS. It arrived in Seattle on the 21st. Every day, web tracking shows a redelivery date of that day, but the package has yet to ever reach the “Out for delivery” status. Hope they find the box soon.

As far as USPS goes, we were getting delivery every other day.

  • Preggo December 29, 2008 (12:18 pm)

We are still waiting for two different packages which should have been here before Christmas.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (12:28 pm)

I just heard back from UPS and will add the info to the post above in a few minutes … TR

  • R26 December 29, 2008 (12:42 pm)

Still missing packages from UPS – kids gifts from far away grandparents.

Don’t have the tracking info so I don’t know where it is.

We did get a UPS delivery in the thick of it – so they did try.

  • BG39 December 29, 2008 (12:52 pm)

I would feel more compassion for UPS’s plight if I got a straight answer from them any of the times I called. At first the packages were going to be delivered on the 23rd, the website said the 23rd, the automated voice at UPS said the 23rd, then the actual human I spoke with said the 23rd. Then around 9 pm on the 23rd I figured that my package was not going to be delivered. Then on the 24th the same thing happened, I had the website, automated voice and a human said the 24th, this was at 8 p.m. on the 24th, when I asked how long the deliveries are made each night she said that no more would be going out and that my packages would be delivered on Monday, I asked what happened to Friday, she said “oh yeah, maybe Friday”. So on Friday morning I called to find out if they had an estimated time for delivery so I could plan my day. They informed me that the packages were not in Seattle, but the arrival scan just meant that it was on it’s way to Seattle. So they have no idea where my packages are or when they will be delivered. I asked to be sent to the “trace” department and they told me a trace couldn’t be done because they don’t know where the packages are and due to the weather somewhere between here and Texas my packages would definitely NOT be delivered on that day (Friday the 26th). I asked again “so my packages will NOT be delivered until next week?”, the UPS guy said that was correct because the packages were not even in Seattle. So, before I left about 2 hours later I did a double check of the status, and lo and behold the package was delivered and sitting out on my front step.

  • Cami December 29, 2008 (12:55 pm)

Yep! Missing one Amazon package full of xmas gifts. I’m showing a second ARRIVAL SCAN today. I haven’t seen a UPS truck for days!

  • Gretchen December 29, 2008 (1:05 pm)

We have at least one package still to come from UPS and three from Fed Ex that keep getting pushed out. Even had an “undeliverable” note for the Saturday delivery this weekend that should have been fine.

  • Kimberley December 29, 2008 (1:57 pm)

You can call/email the shipper of your package and ask for a full or partial refund (especially handy for all those expedited packages that never made it). In the case of perishable items, try calling UPS and asking them to send a message to the depot that your item is perishable and list what’s inside. We did that with our Zingerman’s order and although we gave up on delivery, it arrived late (very late) Friday night.

  • Dano Beal December 29, 2008 (2:00 pm)

You know, the recent weather is not going to determine who gets my future business….. but the attitude and service provided by these companies AFTERWARDS sure will…

  • JH December 29, 2008 (2:11 pm)

Apparently there’s a UPS package at my house, though I’m not there to see it yet!

  • nuancedream December 29, 2008 (2:12 pm)

Still waiting for two UPS packages. One package was second day air and was out for delivery on 12/23. The other package was to have been delivered on 12/18/08 and then on 12/24. Haven’t seen a UPS truck since about 9:00 pm on Christmas Eve on Avalon Way. And the 2008 customer service award goes to…..

  • Rasmus December 29, 2008 (2:19 pm)

I’ve been struggling with UPS as well (2day supposed to be here on the 24th – not even an update on the tracking), so THANK YOU (!!!) for getting some answers out of them. When I tried, all I got was: The weather is bad. Oh, really? I hadn’t noticed. Idiots.

It makes me so happy that WSB can provide the service and support, that UPS seems incapabable of delivering. Go WSB!

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (2:30 pm)

Side note: A few have mentioned FedEx too – we’re not leaving them out of the party but the vast majority of comments/e-mails/Twitter/FB messages we’ve received have been about UPS, so that’s why we contacted them for info.

  • CMP December 29, 2008 (2:32 pm)

I received a UPS delivery on Christmas Eve around 6:30 PM. However, I was house-sitting in Magnolia so apparently it was easier for them to drive around that neighborhood. I know the same thing is happening in Portland so it must be one heck of a backlog on deliveries.

  • Mick December 29, 2008 (2:43 pm)

Thanks for checking into this WSB. What has been most frustrating is the lack of info available. Our packages were to arrive on the 17th and 18th (of December). The most recent status on one of them is Dec 23 – “Adverse Weather”. The others have statuses from Dec 19-21 “Out for Delivery” with no hint as to where they are and when/if they are going to be delivered. I didn’t pay for air express service, but I don’t think my packages should sit behind those especially since they are now 12 days late. I saw FedEx trucks all over Vashon 2 days after the storm and in the case where they couldn’t deliver, they dropped packages off at a local store and then called everyone to tell them they could pick them up there. UPS should have done this.

  • Alice December 29, 2008 (2:46 pm)

I talked to a UPS driver at my workplace today around 12:30. I asked if “they were getting caught up.” He snorted, then looked depressed and said no.

I felt sorry for him, the look on his face said he was getting a lot of flak. I told him that we know how he feels, we’re desperately trying to catch up from our snow days too here where I work.

  • amy December 29, 2008 (2:52 pm)

Waiting on a FedEx package that was shipped on Dec 13th from the East Coast. It sat 5 days in North Carolina and has since been in Portland, supposedly. FedEx is unresponsive to inquiries. I had no problems with UPS – even received an overnight delivery on Christmas Eve!

  • Stephanie Breslin December 29, 2008 (3:00 pm)

I received some packages and not others from UPS; according to the tracking information, one of the as of yet unreceived packages, has been “out for delivery” since 9:16am on the 23rd of December…I requested delivery and exception notifications for all my packages and only received one notification that a package was delivered – nothing for the none delivered packages aka exceptions, even though there were multiple exceptions on the same delivery…

FedEx took 5 days to get a package sent from Burien OVERNIGHT delivery So Cal with no explanation…and they are trying to charge me the overnight rate!

Now on the other hand our postal carrier was here every day bringing packages, like bank checks to the door because she didn’t want them to be left in the box! She deserves bonus or some recognition!

  • Brandon December 29, 2008 (3:31 pm)

I am sympathetic to the fact they are over loaded, but it still seems silly that some UPS trucks made it into our neighborhood with ground shipments, while others sat on 7th Ave for 3 days as undeliverable. Got Jesse?

  • Erech December 29, 2008 (3:56 pm)

I’ve been waiting since the 19th for a package that I ordered – and possibly longer for one sent by relatives for the holidays. Oddly enough, I saw a UPS truck in my neighborhood on Monday the 22nd around 8pm (near 35th and Myrtle), which contradicts what I was told when I called the UPS hotline a few days later.

UPS management screwed the pooch all over the country during the holidays though, and I’m not mad at the drivers in the slightest, but I’m definitely reconsidering ever using UPS again in the future because of this.

  • Sue December 29, 2008 (4:17 pm)

We received a UPS package today that was mailed from Pennsylvania on 12/17 and arrived in Seattle on 12/23. It had lots of notations of “out for delivery” and “adverse weather” on it. Fortunately we didn’t wait as long as some others for the package.

  • patrick December 29, 2008 (4:29 pm)

i have been waiting for 2 packages that were scheduled to be delivered dec 13 & 14th

  • raindance42 December 29, 2008 (4:33 pm)

I’m still waiting on a UPS package that was supposed to be delivered on 12/18 (we live on 26th near Trenton). My sister in law paid extra for three-day shipping to make sure it would arrive in plenty of time. My husband works in retail and is a daily UPS customer at work, and has never been able to get refunds for shipping upgrades (i.e. to overnight) when packages did not arrive on time.

It is especially unfortunate that UPS was not able to accurately track packages so that customers could pick up at a central location. That would seem to be a reasonable compromise for unexpected weather conditions–though IMHO, snow should not be totally unexpected for December!

  • Dave December 29, 2008 (4:36 pm)

Our package was supposed to be delivered 12/18. Christmas presents for my kids from their grandparents, who are here in town to see them open them – and now likely will not. Weather is uncontrollable, but even if we assume 5 lost business days to weather, these folks are completely unprepared. When I went to the service center on 7th Ave So, and told them the computer claimed the package was there, they just laughed. They were very nice to my kids though.

  • Preggo December 29, 2008 (4:43 pm)

Got one of the packages this afternoon! The guy rang the doorbell and bolted off before I could say thanks much less open the door. Poor fellow! Still haven’t received the Christmas box yet, so it’ll be an extended Christmas when we get that.

  • miws December 29, 2008 (4:45 pm)

Brandon, we don’t need Jesse, we’ve got WSB! ;)

  • cmc December 29, 2008 (4:50 pm)

We’ve been waiting for our holiday cards to be delivered from UPS since 12/19. And, I know some are throwing out kudos to the mail carriers but we didn’t have our mail delivered for about 4 of the non-holiday days! Frustrating all around…….but, the garbage collectors did pick-up at our house today! hooray!

  • Todd December 29, 2008 (5:07 pm)

UPS flat out lied to us on multiple days before Christmas about our delivery. The online tracking system was no help and neither were the reps we waited on hold forever to get through to. I hope atleast other parents can relate as to the inconvenience. We ordered on time then we were left wondering how to make our child’s Christmas special. Eventually having to run out at the last minute to buy gifts (again).

i called UPS on Friday of last week (we’re still waiting for about 10 packages) to see if we could come to the distribution center in Georgetown and pick them up and i was told no. UPS told me that they will not release packages at their center as it would overwhelm the facility with people coming in because there were so many people who were missing packages. it seems to me that it would make sense to have some extra hands on deck at the distribution center in times like these.

  • BG39 December 29, 2008 (5:24 pm)

I also have to agree with the person that said the USPS doesn’t deserve a huge recognition. mail wasn’t delivered here for about 3 days that were non holiday.

  • Caroline December 29, 2008 (5:35 pm)

My package has been out for delivery since 12/24. Was initially to be delivered 12/22 now scheduled for 12/29 but it’s 5:30 and no-show. I’ve seen multiple UPS trucks go by my house but none for me!

  • Lisa December 29, 2008 (5:46 pm)

Same with me: 2 Packages scanned in at UPS Seattle on 12/19. One package was out for delivery on 12/23, but never showed due to weather. The other package was delivered on 12/24, xmas eve day at noon. The remaining package shows ‘out for delivery12/29’. It’s 5:45pm, and I haven’t seen it yet.
You know I used to really like UPS; local company, cute drivers – Not this Christmas!

  • Tom December 29, 2008 (7:04 pm)

Remember that the guys who drive the trucks are not the same people who answer the phones, nor the people who run the online tracking system. And these are also not the same people who run the company. I saw one UPS driver trying to negotiate his way down our hill during the worst of the snow and ice, and he looked terrified. He almost tipped his truck over sideways as he tried to turn down a cross street. But he was still out there, doing his best in a bad situation.

UPS drivers are the front-line workers, and they’re really just doing the job they’re told to do. If their route is canceled, it’s not their call, it’s the management’s. If you have complaints, direct it to the corporate headquarters or the regional management. Or, as nants suggests, complain to the city about their inability to clear the streets. It’s not the fault of the drivers, and they shouldn’t be taking the flak for this.

  • Aiken December 29, 2008 (7:05 pm)

1 UPS package, due on the 19th.
6 UPS packages, due on the 22nd.
2 UPS packages, due on the 24th.

9 UPS packages in all, with about 85% of our family’s Christmas gifts.

0 UPS packages delivered since the snow started, through to and including today, the 29th. That’s zero, nil, nada. We have delayed Christmas morning, and at this rate, we expect not to have it until the new year.

0 UPS trucks logged in or out of our 240-house neighborhood’s gate since the snow started, through to and including today, the 29th. That’s zero. No trucks. No delivery attempts. Not one single truck. We typically see two per day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and sometimes one around dinner if it’s busy.

USPS missed only two days. We’ve gotten all of our outstanding USPS parcels.

Fedex has been here about half of the days. Plus, they opened on Christmas day and called people to tell them how to come pick up undelivered packages.

DHL was here today, at least, not sure about before.

My wife and I have resolved NEVER again to purchase anything online if it requires UPS shipping. Also, when things finally arrive, we’ll use the final shipping delay as ammunition to request refunds, and at the same time explain at length why we won’t buy again from their store if UPS is the only option.

There’s just no excuse for their inability to deliver anything at all for so long, with no customer notification at all. It’s not like they’ve never dealt with snowstorms before in other cities. And the customer “service” people are amongst the most unhelpful, dishonest, and rude I’ve ever had the misfortune to talk to. I had to find a dispatcher to get any real info, and only because he obviously hadn’t gotten the how-to-be-a-dickhead training the CS people must get.

  • yo December 29, 2008 (7:12 pm)

Our wedding photos arrived this afternoon, we’ve been waiting since the 17th.

  • Lisa December 29, 2008 (7:21 pm)

7:15pm – Just called 1-800 PickUPS to further check the status of my package that is “out for delivery”.

The automated system asks for your UPS Package #. After the search, the system replies with “Your package is on it’s way to you”.

Of course it’s on it’s way to me. It was shipped to me on 12/16.

    Absolutely laughable and NO help.

  • BG39 December 29, 2008 (7:37 pm)

Tom, I think the main thing people have had problems with is that when we call the line that they tell us to call for information, or we look on the website the information is totally different from what is actually happening. I know that the driver isn’t they guy putting the info in the computer or feeding lines to the guy on the phone.

  • Darren December 29, 2008 (7:48 pm)

i’ve been waiting since the 18th for a package. still nothing.

  • Darren December 29, 2008 (7:53 pm)

I just got off the phone with a non helpful UPS employee. She said that they WILL BE DELIVERING packages on New Years Eve. It’s just getting frustrating.

  • Lisa December 29, 2008 (7:56 pm)

After all my ranting & badmouthing UPS, my package was just delivered, at almost 8pm tonight. Thats pretty late, they must be really trying to empty their trucks. Good luck to everyone – there is hope!

  • Ken December 29, 2008 (9:07 pm)

My package was supposed to be delivered on the 19th and I still haven’t received it yet. It’s been so frustrating because I have seen UPS trucks drive by my house on 35th the whole time during the snow storm (and, of course, since) plus both Fed Ex and USPS made all their deliveries. Man, I never want to use UPS ever again!

  • Fritz December 29, 2008 (9:15 pm)

For a company that takes pride in delivering great service to their customers – and keeps reminding everyone about it all the time – UPS royally screwed up this time.

The “fun” part is that their attitude is to tell us that we have to suck it up and wait as long as they need to sort the mess, while all this time, they keep blaming it on the weather, on the city, and on the customers, who obviously have no right to bitch and moan over their pathetic little missing christmas presents…

It’s surprising how a company with the logistical and material resources that UPS has at their disposal can go belly-up in a moment, as soon as ideal working conditions aren’t met anymore.

What can Brown do for you? Nothing, obviously.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (9:23 pm)

Darren – I’ll check that with the UPS media people again. But I repeated back – repeatedly – “This Wed and Thurs? New Year’s Eve and Day? And you’re not going to work extra holiday time to catch up like, say, our local garbage pickup crews are?” and she reiterated, yes, Wed and Thurs were holidays (which she was the one who brought that up in the first place) and no, they weren’t going to change that. Will fire off another note that hopefully they will answer early in the day at whatever time zone the media unit’s in, also will ask if perhaps they can put us in touch with somebody more local (regional manager?) because there’s also the possibility that local decisions are being made without the national HQ communications folks knowing (I’ve seen that happen in a kazillion organizations).

  • heb December 29, 2008 (9:30 pm)

I am missing a FedEx package(was out for delivery 12/23). I emailed the company I purchased from today and they have rebated my shipping costs and show it coming by Friday. I had a UPS delivery out for delivery on the 18th. I still haven’t received it. It was my husband’s big Christmas gift. I finally was told by UPS today to have Amazon trace the package. Amazon shipped me a replacement TODAY (stating the package was “lost”) and they delivered it TODAY via Dynamex. Had USPS delivery all days. Our mailman rocks. But I know a couple of packages coming from Canada were delayed in getting here (looks like one got to the Post Office today).

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (9:35 pm)

FWIW here is the “holiday schedule” as posted on the UPS website:
    http://www.compass.ups.com/article/article.aspx?id=2289
New Year’s Eve (Wed) is listed as “Delivery of air and international packages only. No UPS Ground pickups or deliveries today.”
So if your pkg is coming by air – maybe you have hope on Wed – I’ll be doublechecking, as mentioned previously, in the morning. Thanks again to everyone who has shared their story. I do hope many more people get their packages tomorrow.

  • Ouchy December 29, 2008 (9:57 pm)

One of our packages came today, one still coming. The one today had no date of delivery, but magically appeared early today! Yay! The other was reschduled AGAIN for tomorrow. Let’s hope it happens!

My dad’s hill in Kent just got reopened yesterday so I hope they get all the multitudes he couldn’t get for 2 weeks and we can wrap up this Christmas. I’m SO over December. :(

  • Erech December 29, 2008 (9:58 pm)

Finally received a package delivery tonight around 6:30, although not one we were expecting so I have no idea when this was shipped.

  • BORNRAISEDWESTSEATTLEITE December 29, 2008 (10:01 pm)

I heard it from my UPS driver today that they are so backed up they have to work New Years eve and day, which is usually their holiday. UPS has things(packages) in large storage containers and have no idea when or where they are going to. So if you want something track it, call on it and you may see it…may not!!

  • heb December 29, 2008 (10:03 pm)

I should note that we did receive some UPS packages Friday. Most shipped later than the ones I’m still waiting on…

  • Ann December 29, 2008 (10:19 pm)

I’m in Interbay/Magnolia, and we got one of our 2 outstanding packages from UPS at 9:15 tonight — yes, 9:15pm! The tracking info for the one that arrived hasn’t been updated since 3:56am on Friday 12/26, when it was supposedly “Out for delivery.” We don’t have the tracking info for the other box (unless it’s the same number, in which case it’s absolutely no help…).

I can understand why UPS hasn’t been able to get as much out as the USPS can — they are set up differently (walking vs. driving) and presumably don’t have the same number of delivery people. And I can understand why they can deal with snowstorms in other cities but not here — this sort of weather is the norm in other cities while it isn’t here. But I don’t understand why they couldn’t have used the time they couldn’t deliver packages to at least organize things so that, say, all of the packages going to Neighborhood A are in this area, and all of the packages going to Neighborhood B are over there, so that we could come get them. And then once they could deliver again, so that the trucks could fill up with one neighborhood’s packages, so the drivers wouldn’t have to visit the same streets multiple times, and so shipments that were sent out together arrive together.

Seems like this was bungled on many levels — a bad situation made worse by the way it was handled.

  • Vanessa Fox December 29, 2008 (10:21 pm)

I have an outstanding UPS delivery that shows it made it to Seattle on Saturday, shows two “arrival scans” on Saturday, then a departure scan, then a note that it’s in transit, then another “arrival scan” today. So apparently, they put it in the truck on Saturday, drove it around for two days, then brought it back? Well, maybe I’ll get it tomorrow.

I did notice a FedEx truck making a delivery at 63rd and Alki at around 8:30 tonight.

  • Vanessa Fox December 29, 2008 (10:31 pm)

I hate to post twice in a row, but I just checked the UPS web site, and they note the package is out for delivery and is “on time” with a scheduled delivery date of 12/30. Except that I paid for overnight delivery and it was shipped on Friday. And according to the UPS web site “UPS Next Day Air” FAQ, I should have gotten my package on Saturday. I totally understand things being delayed by weather, but don’t tell me a package arriving on Tuesday that was supposed to arrive by Saturday is “on time”.

BTW, the package shipped via Dynamex arrived no problem.

  • Erik December 29, 2008 (10:32 pm)

I live in Magnolia, it’s December 29th, and I still haven’t received my package. My parents in Kirkland still haven’t received theirs either. FedEx has been delivering for five days now, USPS almost non-stop. Their customer service is useless, and won’t let me pick up my package. In my anger I wrote a blog: http://blog.filmjabber.com/2008/12/29/ups-is-holding-my-package-hostage/

  • bcoy December 29, 2008 (11:12 pm)

I too work for one of the above mentioned package delivery companies. I was out delivering until after 10pm tonight and I have to back in and at it tomorrow at 8am. Thanks to all my customers that received their packages today with smiling faces and understanding.

  • Brandon December 29, 2008 (11:19 pm)

Sorry Mike, but Jesse and TV trumps WSB.

  • Pam December 29, 2008 (11:32 pm)

I got 2 UPS shipments last week and the week before (I am on a large hill near high point and they got here). But, my FedEx package which was due on Dec 22, just got here today (Dec 29) at 5pm. I was ready to call after I saw it was not on the doorstep. But, my husband snuck it away to show me later. Glad it finally made it.

  • MargL December 29, 2008 (11:56 pm)

Well, the delivery date on my ‘in transit’ package was just pushed from today (12/29) to tomorrow (12/30) which may or may not be a holiday according to their media spokesmouths who apparently do not consult with their database programmers or website maintainers regarding shipping or holiday schedules. (Big breath, release).

  • WSB December 30, 2008 (12:00 am)

Brandon, if you think you’re getting better information from a TV station, then I apologize for letting you down here. Only thing the memorable Mr. Jones can do that I can’t, however, is the on-camera ambush interview. When it comes to digging for information off-air (or offline), I’m not doing it any differently or less professionally/thoroughly with a computer and phone in the home office than I was doing it with a computer and phone in a TV-newsroom office. Incidentally, a Seattle TV station DID finally try the UPS angle tonight – it wasn’t KING, though, but KOMO.

  • Gigi December 30, 2008 (12:17 am)

UPS is a joke! I am still waiting on an expedited package that was due Friday, December 19th. I’ve had 3 other UPS packages delivered on two different days (24th and 29th). FedEx was delayed one day, but they made it to my home on 3 other days that UPS didn’t.
I have been able to get out and drive every day since it started snowing, so I have no sympathy for them.
Who can influence UPS so that this sorting mess doesn’t happen again?

  • Margaret December 30, 2008 (6:53 am)

I’m in the suburbs, not Seattle, but I am still waiting on 4 packages. All were guaranteed to arrive by Christmas. One of them has been at the Redmond facility since December 20th. UPS made a delivery on the 23rd, but that package was not included… apparently it was sitting in a trailer. I have another package that, according to the tracking information, was shipped from CA to Seattle, then back to CA, back again to Seattle and then it finally made it to the Redmond sorting facility. This package had been sent 2 day air so there wasn’t really time for that nonsense.

UPS customer service has been very unpleasant to deal with which has made the whole situation even more infuriating. USPS and my local postal carrier have been wonderful and I plan to use USPS as much as possible and avoid UPS to the extent that I can.

  • Teresa December 30, 2008 (9:23 am)

I received packages that I ordered AFTER the storm already, but still haven’t received packages that are a week late. They’re trying to save face by delivering the new packages on time at the expense of little kids’ Christmas gifts. What an awful company.

UPS has melted down. They are worthless as a shipper, absolutely worthless. The worker bees aren’t at fault but the management flunked. I will never order using them again, if I can possibly help it. And I will refrain from ordering ANYTHING in winter if I HAVE to use them because the retailer won’t use anyone else.

  • Sean December 30, 2008 (11:09 am)

I think it’s pretty disgusting that they aren’t working over the holiday days. For a company who’s primary goal is delivery, their ‘service’ is almost non-existent.

In some cases, you could consider calling your retailer and cancelling your order. They have the ability to re-route a package back to it’s source. If enough people did it it would impact UPS.

We have a package that it’s been stuck in limbo since the 22nd (when it should have got here).

To anyone working for the delivery companies, the streets have been clear since at least Saturday (a lot longer in some cases), so please do something — that excuse no longer holds.

    Sean

  • Mrs. A December 30, 2008 (1:31 pm)

Still waiting! 3 packages due 12/22 and 12/24 have been “out for delivery” since the 24th. I agree with everyone who says this is shameful and the weather excuses are no longer valid. What consequences will UPS face? Anyone know?

  • Brian December 30, 2008 (2:57 pm)

Like others who’ve posted, I’m waiting for two packages from UPS — both of which were initially scheduled for delivery on 12/23 via UPS 2nd Day Air. In my opinion, delays caused by bad weather are excusable, but their inability (and, at times, their refusal) to communicate clearly with their customers is extremely disappointing. I check their website and call their 1-800 number daily, but I’m always given conflicting information. More often than not, I’m simply told “the package will be delivered today,” which never happens. And, when I tell them the website contradicts what they just told me, I get an insincere apology.

Surely, this can’t be the first time they’ve experienced bad weather during the peak holiday season? I mean, come on! They need to develop a contingency plan that enables them to handle this type of situation with more efficiency (rather than just tossing all of the packages in trailers).

  • mani December 30, 2008 (4:12 pm)

I have been waiting on a package that was supposed to be delivered on the 18th…no trace of it yet. Called UPS five times, they have no idea other than the generic “Emergency COnditions” message. USPS delivered every single day. I even see UPS trucks in my complex every day, but not my package. They are just showing how little they care about their customers by not opening up the 31st for delivery. This is the last time I use UPS.

  • mani December 30, 2008 (4:20 pm)

If this is the best they are doing or can do, they should stop their business and go home. If I had bought the item from a store 300 miles away and walked home with it (at 20 miles a day), I should have the item in hand earlier than these guys can deliver. The local management is being uncaring, unsupportive and disappointing. Thank you UPS for ruining Christmas and New Years for me.

  • mani December 30, 2008 (4:21 pm)

My package was scheduled to be delivered on 12/18. Not seen a trace of it yet….

  • Julia December 30, 2008 (4:25 pm)

I have about 10 packages that I’m still waiting on out in Vashon Island. The annoying thing is that packages that shipped later (ground) arrived on Friday. So now it’s Tuesday and I still haven’t seen any of my two day deliveries that are now over a week late. Why am I getting unimportant ground packages?

Each day UPS says the packages have been re-scanned and are out for delivery. But they never arrive. I expected to get them today at the latest. If they don’t come Friday, they’d better be able to re-ship them to Florida as they were presents for family that are visiting and leaving Friday night.

  • Aiken December 31, 2008 (12:24 am)

Still no sign of my nine packages, most of which were due on the 22nd.

Also, no update whatsoever on the website since the 26th.

A pathetic company. What can brown do for you? Ruin Christmas. That’s what brown can do for you.

  • Aiken December 31, 2008 (4:36 am)

By the way, having spent time speaking with the overworked people actually handling the packages and seeing their own plight, I want to be clear that it’s the people running the company that I blame. Competent leadership and planning could have averted at least some of the pain. Making Joe Driver take on triple the work is not the answer.

  • Allen December 31, 2008 (5:19 am)

The thing that bothers me is the lack of information available on the UPS website. I understand the problems caused by the bad weather during the Holiday shipping rush. The lack of current accurate tracking information is a sign that their system is in serious need of being updated to handle things when problems occur. The lack of information as to what is happening is simply poor customer service. Come on how hard is it for UPS to post what is going on. It is not like this is the first time weather has caused delivery delays. Seems like UPS could inform their customers in a timely manner rather than relying on blogs and a few news reports here and there. I simply cannot believe that the silence from UPS is caused by anything other than internal policies. Wouldn’t it be best to simply be honest and above board? FedEx delivered packages to me, one was a couple days late, but UPS has not delivered any so far since the 17th.

  • WSB December 31, 2008 (9:23 am)

Allen – That’s the question we are asking the UPS folks today, why the website info is completely deficient.
Side note, while “blog” is in our name (legacy from how the site started three years ago), WSB is a journalist-run news service (30 years in the news business between us), formally credentialed (and city/state licensed as a business), so UPS talking with us does not constitute “relying on blogs.” This is the format neighborhood-level news is moving to — and when it’s a combination of veteran journalists and an engaged, involved community (the other major example in Seattle at the moment is MyBallard.com), it can be more informative, thorough, and timely than the one-way media ever was.

  • Allen December 31, 2008 (11:22 am)

I should have phrased that differently, UPS customers are having to rely on blogs and news article to attempt to find information rather than simply going to UPS.com and clicking on a link or two to get accurate and timely information for weather related exceptions.

Some people state that UPS will be delivering on New Years Eve Day while other say they will not. Gets a bit confusing at times…

  • Charlie December 31, 2008 (11:43 am)

Five packages shipped overnight or second day air are still in limbo, all should have arrived days ago. Now we’re leaving to go out of town for a few days, and I don’t want them delivered this afternoon and sitting on the porch! So I called the 800 number and was told that under “normal conditions” they could get a message to the driver on my route to skip me, but their orders are not to send any messages of any kind to Washington. He suggested I leave a note on my door! Right. Grrr. I’ll ask a neighbor to keep an eye out and bring them in if they arrive, but it’s interesting to see UPS so blatantly setting up their customer “service” in their gatekeeper role with no recourse for sharing information or solving problems created by their astonishingly poor planning. On the other hand — all the FedEx packages were a few days late but are all here, and the last one was located by a very helpful customer service person at the local facility.

  • Tom CF December 31, 2008 (12:24 pm)

5 packages that were scheduled a week before Christmas, still not delivered. No one has any real information about them, or really knows where they are. The best answer we got was “maybe Friday”. Amazon and anyone else using UPS is not likely to get my business anytime soon. Every other delivery service managed to make it to our block.

  • Andrew December 31, 2008 (12:29 pm)

I ordered a package 2 day air that said it was “Out for Delivery” on 12/19/08 followed by “Exception”. No one at UPS could tell me where it is, when it will be delivered or even if I could come pick it up. I should note the same thing happened to me with Fed Ex and they delivered the package the next day (12/20/08). This whole UPS thing is laughable. I’m not even certain they know for sure what is going on.

  • Aiken December 31, 2008 (6:38 pm)

We got seven of our nine packages today, New Year’s Eve. Not sure where the other two are right now, but I’m somewhat reassured that they may eventually arrive. We at least have enough now to proceed with our delayed Christmas morning.

I wouldn’t be a UPS sorter/loader/driver for any amount of money right now. I think the suits screwed them over really badly this season, with a lack of planning and extra resources, and they’re taking all of the heat for it.

  • Allen January 1, 2009 (3:04 am)

All my packages now say “THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED / DELIVERY RESCHEDULED” and some list 1/05/2009 as the new delivery date.

I wonder who requested this, I know that I did not…

  • Allen January 1, 2009 (4:40 am)

I have been searching the Internet for what “THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED / DELIVERY RESCHEDULED” means in UPS speak.

Seems it means anything from “We finally found your package” to “We gave your package to the Post Office to deliver to you” to “it will be delivered on the next business day” or even “your package was/is buried in our system. We do not know when it will be delivered until we actually find it”.

I wonder if UPS management will improve their system and let customers know what is going on or continue with their current policy of misinformation. Hopefully UPS will use this as a learning event and improve things for the next time. Yes, it will happen again. Maybe not for years. But there will be a next time.

UPS has provided pretty good service in the past when everything goes well. Internal politics no doubt play a role when things go wrong.

UPS, please get your act together.

  • Allen January 1, 2009 (6:49 am)

I just found out that “THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED / DELIVERY RESCHEDULED” might also mean that emergency conditions are no longer a valid reason for not delivering a package. Same delay issues but an erroneous reason the package has not been delivered.

UPS certainly has mishandled all aspects of providing honest and timely information as to bad weather exceptions. Sigh.

  • Erech January 2, 2009 (6:19 pm)

Still waiting on a package from the 18th to be delivered. Tracking # was finally updated yesterday to say it was schedule for delivery for today, but it’s after 6 now so that seems less and less likely.

UPS =’s superfailure of the year, ew boy.

  • Wile E. Quixote January 2, 2009 (10:50 pm)

UPS is completely worthless. I had packages that were shipped next day air before Christmas and that arrived in Seattle on the 23rd and that still haven’t been delivered. I keep checking the tracking information for the packages and UPS keeps pushing the delivery date out. Originally my packages were going to be delivered on the 30th, then the 31st, then the 2nd. Now the delivery date is January 5th. Compare and contrast this to FedEx. I had packages that I ordered that were supposed to be delivered on the 24th. They weren’t, and I can’t hold that against FedEx because of the lousy weather. But FedEx did send drivers out on the 27th and my packages were delivered that day.

What the Hell is wrong with UPS? Is it management, labor or both that have made the company so worthless? Why aren’t they authorizing overtime and putting trucks out on the weekends to catch up on their delivery backlog? I have to say that it’s going to be a cold day in Hell before I use UPS again, compared to FedEx and USPS the brownshirts at UPS suck ass. “What can brown do for you?”. Well I don’t know, they sure can’t deliver packages in a timely fashion.

  • WSB January 2, 2009 (10:51 pm)

We have posted a separate semi-update tonight elsewhere on the site – for what it’s worth, there does appear to be overtime going on tonight – several people have reported receiving their packages, and we saw a UPS truck wandering around our neighborhood at 10 pm (less than an hour ago) – TR

I called UPS today and was promised that all 5 of my packages were on the truck and would be delivered today. Two of them show on the truck in the status, but 3 show no activity since the 30th. One package had an original delivery date of the 22nd.

3 of the packages were ordered 2 day air, this week. They got to Redmond overnight and have sat around since Tuesday.

It’s 11pm, no packages. So now they’re not just not delivering, they’re lying to you when you call and ask.

Oh, and when you call the UPS number, the recording says “all packages should be delivered by Jan 2nd,” even though it is clear lots of packages are not.

At least I know I’m not the only who feels lied to by UPS. Monday was told it was on the truck when it wasn’t (the hub hadn’t even been reopened at that time I came to find out). Tuesday was told I’d get it by Friday. Today the status was changed to “out for delivery”. Midnight… no package. Am told it was rescheduled for Monday. Never will I use UPS again. Oh, and UPS trucks were going up and down my street all day – saw at least 4. Apparently if your package isn’t a priority, it doesn’t matter that they drive right by your house. So long UPS.

Sorry, comment time is over.
