West Seattle motorcycle crash victim ID’d: Former Tukwila councilmember Dave Fenton

The motorcycle rider killed on West Marginal Way SW in West Seattle on Sunday is now identified: 67-year-old Dave Fenton, who, The Seattle Times (WSB partner) reports, served eight years on the Tukwila City Council. (The photo at right is from his 2005 campaign, when he lost his bid for a third term.) The King County Medical Examiner’s Office lists the cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries; Seattle Police said on Sunday that the rider was killed instantly after hitting a pole and being thrown from his Harley (WSB photo above left) and that witnesses say the motorcycle and a black car were “racing” right before the crash, which closed the road for 5 hours. Tukwila records archives show Mr. Fenton’s focuses as a councilmember included crime prevention and telecommunications, as well as multi-family housing (he is listed as an owner of a large complex there).

ADDED 8:15 AM: Overnight, Mr. Fenton’s daughter Monica posted this comment following our original story:

This is tragic and my heart is broken. Dave Fenton is my father and he was the victim of this terrible fatal accident. My heart aches and I still can’t believe he is gone. He loved riding his Harley on beautiful sunny days and Sunday was one of those rare delights. He was 67, a trained rider, both participant and advocate of offered safety courses for ALL bikers. He LOVED to ride Alki and on a beautiful sunny day he was doing what he loved. There is more to this story and investigation. We will have a celebration of life ceremony on Sunday, July 1.

kinda skeptical that this man was “racing”…especially on a Harley…

I knew that comment was coming. Age means nothing.

  • jsw June 26, 2012 (8:34 am)

    velo_nut…

my comment had nothing to do with his age…had everything to do with himself and his Harley…they are not typically fast bikes…I have a Harley and they are too heavy to “race”…

I wouldn’t be surprised if he perhaps suffered a heart attack, causing an accidental “acceleration” of his bike (so it “seemed” he was racing)and he had passed away even before hitting the pole…

Ride-on fallen brother. Condolences to the family, and try to ignore ignorance.

Yeah – a 67 year old guy on a Harley doesn’t fit the profile of the young squids that race around Alki on crotch rockets. Could be a road rage related situation gone wrong as he tried to flee from or pursue the black car in question.

I just left the scene of the accident. It all just doesn’t make sense. We left a cross on the pole that was struck with his bike. The investigation is on going because after visiting the scene there HAS to be more that led to this accident. He was in good health, some of the best in his life. No heart conditions or concerns that would have led to his loss of control. God be with us on this journey. I pray for wisdom and discernment.

Was Dave from West Seattle? I knew a Fenton family who lived a couple of blocks north of the Lincoln Park tennis courts in the ’60’s….

  • David June 26, 2012 (2:41 pm)

Older man on a Harley racing? I’m having a hard time believing that.

  • yo June 26, 2012 (3:45 pm)

    May he rest in peace.

Another news site I saw had a reference to a witness who thought he was possibly being chased by the car/driver as opposed to a race.

No matter what the reason, I’m so sorry for your loss Monica. I just recently lost my dad, also WAY too young, and I know how horrible it is. Please know my thoughts are with you.

My heart goes out to Mr. Fenton’s family, no matter who was at fault.

I live just off of W. Marginal Way. That blind curve has been the site of more than one serious accident. Not only are the sight lines atrocious, but the trucks pulling out of the La Farge cement plant are washed down to clean off cement dust. The trucks drizzle water all over the roadway as they pull out of the plant, so that part of the road is often slick and wet, even in good weather. It’s especially dangerous during freezing weather. Another hazard at that spot is the fact that the Alaska Marine Lines trucks pull out of their driveway very slowly. If you’re driving too fast around the curve heading south, you can come up on one of them pulled out across the road.

Please be careful when driving on West Marginal Way, people. The life you save could belong to me, my family or my very nice neighbors. Thank you!

My father-in-law was a good and decent man who always got into things 110%. He was a good and cautious driver and had taken a number of safe motorcycle courses put on by the police. All things will be revealed in time. It is my prayer that the driver of the other car has a small grasp of the pain my family, especially Dave’s daughter is feeling. We are heart broken at the loss of a great man who easily shared his love with all of us. He was a man of great humor and unbounding charm. This is an enormous loss.

  • Monica Manthey June 26, 2012 (11:51 pm)

Thank you all for the prayers and even though knowing the scenario will not change the outcome, any information is appreciated. He will be missed more than you know and our heart will ache for many many years to come.

What a sad story. I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Monica Fenton Manthey June 29, 2012 (11:13 pm)

Every day is a better day and his generosity was far reaching. Gods providence TRUMPS the plans of man. Why does a tragedy like this open our eyes much wider to things we take for granted. He ALWAYS sent me flowers on
my birthday, valentines day, and now Mothera Day as I have been raising his granddaughter the last 5 years. If he was dining where fireman or police were, he often picked up their tab without them knowing. He gave more than he ever received. What a beautiful legacy for those fortunate enough to share in his moments. Love you Dad… Forever.

Sorry, comment time is over.
