West Seattle Hi-Yu celebrates the 2011 White Rose reception

(Photos by Ellen Cedergreen for WSB)
A celebration of tradition and history last night at Fauntleroy Church, as West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival royalty present and past gathered for the White Rose Reception. The highlights included a candle-lighting ceremony; above, Danette Carufel from the 1984 court, with 2010 Senior Court Queen Georgia Mitchell. More of WSB contributor Ellen Cedergreen‘s photos ahead:

Past Hi-Yu royalty is always invited and welcome as part of the celebration:

Above, from left: Pam Storz (1979), Angela Nichols (1990), Tiara Johnson Andress (1998), Danette Carufel (1984), Auburn Scallon (1999), Michelle Mierz (2000), Heather Cook (2000), Jill Cook (2001). The 2011 Junior Court entertained the crowd with a dance they choreographed themselves:

2010 Junior Court Princess Isabella Carufel took her turn at the microphone, with a cover of the Beatles classic, “Let it Be”:

2010 Senior Court Princess Kelly Nealson sang “The Rose”:

Music was followed by memories – not just those found in scrapbooks on tables at the reception:

Both senior and junior courts from 2010 shared some of their favorite memories, including the many parades in which they participated, riding on the Hi-Yu float. Senior Court Princess Veronica Pupava remembered the fun times she had both on and off the float with the rest of the 2010 court:

The White Rose reception is also a night for proud family members and Hi-Yu supporters to celebrate, and capture their own memories:

And the courts ending their reign welcomed the new one, both senior and junior, white roses in hand:

All together, those are the 2010 and 2011 Senior and Junior Courts. From left: 2011 Senior Court: Princess Victoria, Princess Rosemarie, Queen Kelsey; 2011 Junior Court: Queen Taylor, Princess Riley, Princess Kaitlin; 2010 Junior Court: Princess Kaitlin, Princess Isabella, Queen Kailin; 2010 Senior Court: Princess Veronica, Queen Georgia, Princess Kelly. And before the night was over, they posed with the past royalty:

As decided two months ago, Hi-Yu is changing its timetable for choosing a new senior court, so there will not be a coronation this year. But the junior court will keep the summer timetable, so the 2012 court will be chosen/announced on July 15th – the day of the Hiawatha Fun Fest, as always – and applications are being taken now; find them along with lots of explanatory information by going here. And watch for Hi-Yu reps at all the big upcoming summer events – buy a button and support the program.
