Update: Teen arrested after robbery at Super 24

(Cameraphone photo added 12:39 pm)
ORIGINAL 12:29 PM REPORT: Police are rushing right now to the Super 24 in the 5400 block of Delridge – where there’s a report of an armed robbery involving a suspect described as a black female in her teens who said she had a knife. NEW DESCRIPTION: Wearing a light gray zipper hoodie sweatshirt, turquoise shirt underneath, red-and-white-striped scarf around her neck, black pants and white shoes, large earrings, carrying a green bag with a black strap. This store was held up earlier this week (Tuesday night) – as of last night, Lt. Norm James told us at the Southwest District Council meeting, no arrests (two male suspects in that one). This is the same store whose owner has been working with community volunteers to transform it into a “healthy corner store.” 2:20 PM UPDATE: Seattle Police media unit Det. Mark Jamieson confirms they have arrested a suspect, who he says is a 15-year-old girl.

I drove by the Super 24 store about 20 minutes ago. There were several several police cruisers in or around the intersection of Juneau and Delridge and I witnessed a black female being placed into the back seat of one cruiser. She appeared to be handcuffed.

Thanks, William – police have just confirmed they did make an arrest – paperwork’s not in yet regarding what charges she faces. Have added to the story – TR

This is such a shame. I am hoping more business will come into the area since there are several store fronts empty.

  • cjboffoli February 4, 2010 (1:44 pm)

WSnewbie: It’s certainly not a strong incentive for new businesses when the existing businesses are getting robbed multiple times in the same week.

I have lived in West Seattle for over 15 years and I have never seen so much crime. It seems to be increasing and I am so afraid that this great area of Seattle will slowly become the “HOOD”.

  • Todd February 4, 2010 (4:17 pm)

I have been in here about as long too T-Rex and have the same fears despite my involvement in trying to make this a better place or atleast to try and keep it from sliding down hill which appears to be the trend thanks in part to development/density. The economy too.

Not knocking the WSB but I don’t know if the WSB makes it seem worse: I never heard about crime 15 years ago but now I do. Yet, unless I read the WSB, I don’t hear about much crime. So does it “appear” to be more crime because you hear about it, or is there actually more crime? The Delridge corridor was always known as a little rougher even 15 years ago. To me, I actually see it improving rather than getting worse (nicer stores and houses).

    • WSB February 4, 2010 (6:16 pm)

We’ve discussed that before. You hear about it more now and that certainly may make some feel like there is more. We believe “knowledge is power,” so share the info that others have shared with us. Stat-wise, we report trends as much as we can (see the most recent West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting report). Some’s down, some’s up. There’s a LOT of news, not just crime, that we report here – from neighborhood council meetings to new programs at schools, and a lot more – that isn’t reported anywhere else, so you can choose to not read and not know, or read and know. The good as well as the bad.
      .
“Compared to 15 years ago” would be interesting – I don’t know where I’d find that! But for example, the rates of homicide and stranger-on-stranger violence are EXTREMELY low. Property crime is higher and those are the ones that tend to affect people most personally … but the heightened awareness has helped people be on the lookout and solve more than a few cases. We’re “glass half full, not half empty” people ourselves FWIW … tr

Wonder if this teen aged girl hangs out with the 17 year old teen girl that attacked Officer Jason McKissack. Tough time to be a kid these days.

West Seattle is full of good people, sad to hear about the small minority of bad seeds.

  • mark February 4, 2010 (8:32 pm)

    Eric,

You make a great point, but I think, no. I am almost 50. When I was a kid I had no clue what a “predator” was, there was no Sex Offender Registry, etc. But we have moved to a 24/7/365 news cycle. The weekly newspaper I read as a kid is long gone, as the daily is also headed there. Its fast, its in the moment, our attention span is minutes, not days. No, WSB does not make is worse, but they do help to keep us better informed.

    T-rex,

Calling it the “Hood” is not condoning a positive image of the neighborhood in and around Delridge. There has been a lot of work to clean up the area and help the people of the neighborhood not be looked down upon and for you to call it as such is degrading and insensitive. Many people who live and work in the area wouldn’t want their neighborhood to be degraded simply based upon the actions of one. Exhibit some respect for your neighborhood and it will respect you back.

  • samson February 5, 2010 (6:14 am)

    Lee –

I have to agree with T-Rex – I moved here almost 6 years ago and I could see the difference from 6 yrs ago to present day. the crime has been increasing. unbelievable. he is right as its becoming ‘HOOD! Look at West Seattle and sit down and look at this West Seattle comparing your time of living here while back and right now, what is the comparison? I prefer old days than today. Crime is crazy and people are not getting any common sense to watch their backs and study strangers’ faces, West Seattle is not helping other West Seattle, they are hating each other, they are not supporting, they are not helping, they are not friendly! WHY? Thiefs and the gang are being selfish to host the “FORT” of West Seattle. you could see. more homework for you.

      For context…
      .
Anybody who has a little time – I will be checking this out later today but have an urgent “to-do” stack over at least the next four hours – can do a crime comparison by census tract going back as far as 1996 (or so the drop-down menu suggests) via this Seattle Police webpage:
      http://www.seattle.gov/police/crime/historical.htm
      .
Anecdotally, even further back than those stats, West Seattle had a particularly ugly summer in 1993. It was the first summer we lived in our house, two years after we moved to Seattle, and I was producing late-night TV news at that time so I had multiple reasons to remember it vividly. Anyway, almost everything since then has seemed quieter. The last paragraph of this archived story I just found gives you a hint at what THAT summer was like. Compare it to last summer, when that Alki shooting in early May led to a lot of concern it might be a bad summer – but it wasn’t.

      • WSB February 5, 2010 (7:13 am)

P.S. One more thing on historical statistics.
        .
That year I mentioned a couple comments ago, 1993? Seattle had 73 homicides that year.
        .
        Last year (2009) – 21.
        .
(Two were in West Seattle, both in February 2009, the Steve Bushaw shooting in The Junction and the Lavon Barrett beating in a Fauntleroy Way apartment).

  • waman February 5, 2010 (6:57 am)

Is this the same female that robbed the Chase bank in Thriftway?

    • WSB February 5, 2010 (7:06 am)

The description in that one, at least initially, was a woman in her 20s-30s. But we’ll ask.

  • T-Rex February 5, 2010 (8:58 am)

    Lee,

I knew I could count one at least one PC comment from my statement. And I am so sorry if I hurt someone’s feelings but it is what it is. When you combine people who do respect their neighboorhood with people who do not, guess who gets the most attention?

  • KathHP February 5, 2010 (4:40 pm)

Our daughter, who attends Sealth, told us about this yesterday evening. I’ll throw out a disclaimer since I’ve no idea if it is true or not, but she said the scuttlebutt was that the girl left school grounds, robbed the mini-mart, then had the audacity to come back to school.

If so, I’m so glad to know that robbery has become such a blase pastime.

  • Egigik February 6, 2010 (7:03 am)

T-Rex I’ve lived in west seattle all my life which is 60 years and I couldn’t agree with you more.My friends who live outside of west seattle have been calling it the HOOD now for the past 5 years. As soon as my wife retires were leaving the HOOD.

  • rob February 7, 2010 (10:56 am)

What? There was a time 15 years ago when Delridge was riddled with bullet holes and crime. People have short memories. Crime is now reported hundreds of times more than in the mid 90’s and it appears as though crime is increasing, but given the population increase and the public’s drooling desire to watch police and crime dramas, the media tends to over exaggerate figures to appease the waiting audience.

  • samson February 9, 2010 (4:17 pm)

people seems not having enough attention, so they behave out of control and not thinking twice as we have to pay the taxes for the police not going out on street while back ups are out there supporting. its so hard to believe and see the word “HOOD” so better make this word lower caps. its blinding my eyes! Sweep this word away to sewers to enjoy the smells!

Sorry, comment time is over.
