guidosmomMemberHas anyone ever eaten at the Yen Wor (I haven’t), and have you ever tried the “vegetarian” items? I have been getting their menu in the mail every month or so, and am always confused by the “vegetarian” items, such as vegetarian chicken, vegetarian beef, vegetarian pork. What does that mean? Is it really vegetarian? My partner ordered takeout from there once and was certain the vegetarian chicken was really chicken. Does anyone know anything about this?

ChessaMemberI have never eaten there BUT I have had the asian style mock meats in restaurants before – they are surprisingly true to their meaty counterparts! I had a general tsao’s chicken once that I really had to inspect closely to assure myself that I wasn’t eating chicken flesh. I think the veggie meats are mostly made of wheat gluten (like seitan, if you’ve had that)or possibly soy and then they just flavor them by cooking them in different broths. We were at Uwajimaya today and they had all kinds of vegetarian meats – even vegetarian kidney! Weird!

ACWSParticipantI would not eat at the Yen Wor unless it was very late at night and your options were limited. I haven’t had good food there. The fries are okay. I believe the karaoke and bar are their main money makers.

celeste17ParticipantI wouldn’t eat there either. Last time I ate there I got Food Poisoning. If you want a really good Chinese Food try Ho-Win Restaurant on California and Juneau. The make everything to order and everything is so good. When I am craving chinese this is where I go.

JanSParticipantlol…jiggers…that’s what we’ve always called it, too. The only thing that I’ve ever had from there that I really enjoyed was the Hot and Sour soup.

SuitsarenotBoringMemberThis very subject makes me snicker every time I get that postcard. I will say that my boyfriend and I love the bar for people-watching, karaoke-listening, and cheap booze (usually open until actually 2am), but not for eating. One time we stumbled into a birthday party in the bar – where they had brought in their own food. Not a good sign :)

JimmyGMemberThis KC Health inspector page pretty much sums it up for me:

It’s always interesting to look up the Health Dept’s inspection records for your local restaurant.

JimmyGMemberCompare the Yen Wor page to one of my favorite WS places (not Chinese) during the same time period–Ephesus:

JiggersMemberLots of restaurants get away with not handling food properly or their employees not washing their hands correctly with warm water and soap to rid of germs before they serve you. The problem is that the watch dogs can’t be everywhere at once unless a complaint has been made to them about unsanitized conditions.

JiggersMemberIn retrospect to yung whore, I went and karaokeed their one night and got sick the next day and suspected that those mics they used are nasty because I did hint a bad smell and most likely hasn’t been sanitized or cleaned in ages. I am sure they are ladened with Ecoli since those mics are communally used every night, and everyone’s hands and spittal goes directly to where your lips sing too. Karaokeeing is an easy way to get sick fast because of those reasons.

guidosmomMemberThank you all! I have done karaoke there, and it seems like no matter how little I drink, I still feel hungover after going there. Probably not a good sign…

HPMemberI did not want to bring it up myself… but…since everyone is talking about it ….. the food is bad there, I will eat chinese only at Tai Tung in the ID. Luck Toys food was awful too. But as far as the money made at yen wor the bar makes a ton of money and the owner makes even more by charging her employees if a customer walks out with out paying and tries any where she can to back charge the employees for anything I know a couple of the workers and boy is the owner something else… I stopped by one night and my boyfriend was drinking I was driving and said so and she charged me for my coffee anyhow. And she will overserve anytime to make a buck so I refuse to spend my money there anymore.

JiggersMemberAll restaurant and bar establishments makes their employees pay for any walkout bills. It’s their responsibility to make sure that they keep and eye on them at all times. It’s a way for the owners not to have to take the losses personally or they’d be out of business.

changingtimesMemberi dont understand HP you said she charged you for your coffee and your mad about it????

HPMemberChanging times not mad I am the des driver quite alot and many establishments dont charge DDs for their non alcoholic beverages. just as a courtesy. If i was mad I would have said mad about coffee charge I just dont like to spend my money where small business owners care not about their community ie overserving which is dangerous for all of us when they get behind the wheel and then not do a favor for desingnated drivers. thats all. maybe i am sensitive to overserving because my best friends mom was killed by a drunk driver.
July 2, 2008 at 6:50 am #629740
AnonymousInactiveI’ve never heard of DD’s not being charged for their non-alcoholic beverages.
That’s pretty cool. Which establishments do that?
July 2, 2008 at 8:32 am #629741
JiggersMemberHP, this is a capitalistic society we live in now, so what’s the problem? If you own a business, you have the right to charge anything and everything.
July 2, 2008 at 2:30 pm #629742
Bikefor1MemberNR, lots of places comp non-alcohol drinks for designated drivers: Safeco field (though you had to present a coupon), The bar at Snoqualmie Ski resort.
