My mom is coming to visit from out of town and is a big knitter.

Can anyone recommend some good yarn stores that are favorites here in WS or even downtown?

    Thank you!

My mom knits also… the “LYS Tour” (LYS = local yarn store) is over, but their website is still a great resource. Click on “Shops” at the top of the page.

    The store list includes:

    Seattle Yarn

I really liked the Seattle Yarn Store… They also have great buttons…

there is also one in Queen Anne that my daughter really liked…. and again. great buttons.

but the real gem.. for those who love yarn.. is a small store in Port Gamble that sells hand dyed, hand spun yarns… i have been there twice now and love it. it is open on friday, saturday and sunday…

hope your mom has a great time..

NR– Port Gamble would make a lovely daytrip for you and your mom. Take the ferry from Edmonds, drive through Kingston, take a right at the first light out of town, drive about 10 more mins and when the speed limit drops to 25 you are in Port Gamble. It is a lovely quaint little town that used to be a log processing port. Now it’s mostly tourism. A very fun day though!

My mom will be retiring out here in the next few years, so I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to meet. :)

And don’t forget the Yarn Gallery, right there on California near the Morgan Junction! Lot’s of wonderful yarn and accessories.

Seattle Yarn is the same store that used to be Yarn Gallery. They have a decent selection and really nice buttons, but I think the Fiber Gallery in Greenwood (7000 Greenwood Ave N, http://www.fibergallery.com) is fabulous–they have the widest selection of different materials I’ve seen, including lots of eco-friendly ones.

Acorn Street in the U District is awesome, also. They have a huge selection and the people working there are great. They also have great sales.

My Mom use to own the Yarn gallery. The people that own it now have done a nice job in expanding the selection and making it a nice store. We still miss it but glad that we no longer have the day to day of having to pay the bills and order the yarn. We sold it about 10 years ago.

I knit a lot as well and the two yarn stores where the majority of my yarns come from are the Yarn Gallery here in WS and Tricoter at 3121 E Madison St. Tricoter was a sentimental favorite because it’s where I used to get my “fu-fu” yarn when we lived on Capitol Hill. I do have to say though that the Yarn Gallery here in WS has made it so I don’t have to go anywhere else for a great selection of fun yarns and really friendly staff.

Of course, for huge projects, it’s always my choice to go to Michael’s. Probably if your mom is a regular knitter she already has a lot of “ordinary” yarn.

Regarding Yarn Gallery, right at the front counter, they have some GREAT hand-spun yarns that are sold for a good cause. I love to saturation of the colors and the quality of the yarn. Might be a fun thing for her to add to her collection. I haven’t even decided what to do with mine and I have several hanks of it.

I was just reading that tomorrow (6/14) is “Worldwide Knit in Public Day” – go to http://www.wwkipday.com for info and to find local events. I’m not a knitter (I used to crochet though), but thought I’d pass this along.

    JT..

thanks.. i would have had to look it up for spana…

it is a great store.. there are some rather spendy felted items.. lots of wonderful yarn and dyed fleece including a basket of remnants that are affordable for felting small projects…

They also spin and weave in the store..

i love visiting their store… and i love visiting Port Gamble.

there are also antique stores, specialty stores, a tea and chocolate shop, a general store with a museum downstairs and a huge shell collection upstairs, a co-op sort of gallery and a wonderful farmers market on the weekend… from 10 to 4, i think.. that had hand carved teak furniture as well as smaller crafts and fruits and veggies…

it’s the sort of place where you want to take a camera and spend some time.

you can even picnic from the deli in the store..

Wow, what a great thread, thanks JoB and JT for that info about the Port Gamble store! A new excuse to go up to that area!

Lots of great advice on the thread already, and I have a coupla cents to add. NewRes, if you do go to Port Gamble, another possibility would be to go via Bainbridge and stop at Churchmouse Yarns & Teas in Winslow. You can google them for directions. (I would recommend doing any trips across the water on a weekday if you can.)

There’s also a nice shop on 1st Ave. downtown in the block between Bell and Battery (I think, or maybe the next block north). Sorry I can’t remember the name. But definitely do check out Seattle Yarn here in WS. The one on Queen Anne is called Hilltop Yarn, and I second Acorn St. All of these shops have web sites with directions. Have fun!

Another Port Gamble tip for fiber arts fun: the lovely little Port Gamble Historic Museum has just a few handmade lace collars and at least one beautiful needlelace fan, as I recall.

Didn’t know about Knit in Public day! Hmmm… I think we should have a “Lace in Public” day….
