Where to shred docs

I have several bags full of old bills, check stubs, used check books, etc – too much to shred by hand – any places near West Seattle to take to get shredded?

You might want to call your bank/CU and see if they have something similar planned. I think they often have these post-April 15th. My CU (Prevail, nee King County CU) has a bin where you can deposit limited amounts on each visit.

If you buy your own shredder (recommended), you should shred anything with your name, address, etc., incl. credit card offers, preprinted donation forms, etc. Crooks can be very creative about using a little useful data to cause lots of trouble. Plain paper can be included in your food waste bin; I would shred carbonless copy paper, etc. separately and include in the garbage instead because of the chemicals.

Yesterday, Confidential Data Disposal (425-827-5566) came to us to shred almost 50 boxes of OLD documents. It cost us less than $130 and included a Certificate of Destruction. I highly recommend them!!!

If you opt to buy your own shredder, get a crosscut one, if you can afford it, as opposed to a strip shredder.

Strip shreds could be pieced back together, and your private info taken from that, and in some cases, enough info can be gleaned from just one strip.

I’ve had my crosscut for a few years now, so don’t recall the cost, but as I recall, it didn’t seem like it was comparatively much more than the strip shredder I’d bought a few years previous.

I use American Data Guard on W Marginal Way S. They are associated with the Northwest Center. You take your material to their loading dock, and an employee will unload it and provide a Certificate of Destruction. Here’s their website for more information:

BECU will have a shredding party after April 15, the closest being at the Tukwila location off of Interurban.

I’ve had trucks come to my home and they charge about $25-50 (can’t remember) for a 32 gallon trash can full. Maybe a few of us could get together and have them come for a shredding party locally.
