jspennyMemberI know its tough out there. The worst part is trying to find that one oppertunity.I meen deep down you know that your very good at what you do, its just trying to get people to put trust in your ability and give you a shot. Hey nobody said trying to be successful was going to be easy.
October 18, 2010 at 7:35 pm #705866
JanSParticipantbut don’t you know? if we leave the tax cuts for the wealthy, the jobs will flow, according to the supporters! what? are you saying that hasn’t happened yet?
October 18, 2010 at 8:56 pm #705867
B-squaredParticipantI’m amazed when folks complain about there not being any jobs. Or about needing a college degree to earn a decent living. We’ve spent the last 50 years automating everything or outsourcing it so we could have cheaper crap, the stockholders would get bigger dividends and upper management could become filthy rich. Even if we all had advanced degrees, where would we work? The jobs have been eliminated. Takes fewer people to do more. The only place i see growth is the service sector that caters to all the tasks people can’t or won’t do for themselves any longer. car repair/maintenance, home repair/maintenance, shopping, cooking, walking the dog, raising the children, etc.

redblackParticipantwell, they still haven’t built a machine that can lay bricks, form concrete walls, or clean up a construction site.
.
no, they figured out another way to break trade unions.

jspennyMemberI am one those guys that does the work that no one else wants to or knows how,the construction trade. I am just trying to see whats out there along with how other people are getting on.

SmittyParticipantHey JanS,
Maybe Republicans should start using the same line that Democrats do regarding jobs?
Tax cuts have “created or saved millions of jobs!”. Hard to quantify, no?
October 19, 2010 at 4:01 am #705871
BlendParticipant“they took errr jobs!!”
October 19, 2010 at 1:53 pm #705872
anonymeParticipantB-squared, good points. The fact that the only jobs available are in the service industry helps explain the burgeoning uneducated slave class. Was this accidental, or orchestrated? It just doesn’t pay to be smart in America these days. The only other industry with unlimited openings is the military.
October 19, 2010 at 2:41 pm #705873
redblackParticipantsmitty, it was federal spending that saved jobs, not tax cuts.
if you’re going to put words in our mouths, make them the right ones.
i notice that there are whole lot of anti-stimulus-spending republicans out there with their hands out, too.

sarellyMemberBuy American, buy locally from the Mom & Pops, don’t buy from the big chains, shop yard sales, buy used stuff. For starters – don’t feed the monster unless you absolutely can’t avoid it.

datamuseParticipantThe fact that the only jobs available are in the service industry helps explain the burgeoning uneducated slave class.
Really? How do you figure?
October 19, 2010 at 6:08 pm #705876
SmittyParticipant“smitty, it was federal spending that saved jobs, not tax cuts.”
What I meant to say was replace “federal spending” with “tax cuts” and use the same line.
I could easily say that without tax cuts we would have lost MORE jobs – just like the Left likes to say about the stimulous.
October 19, 2010 at 7:03 pm #705877
JoBParticipantSnotty..
Except.. big business and tbe very wealthy got not only tax cuts but tax incentives for moving all those jobs overseas .. which they Did with a vengeance.
Seems go me that I remember your bragging about your company downsizing … wall street doublespeak for profitability.
Trickle down is nothing more than a sales job. If it had been a viable plan it would have worked by now.
October 19, 2010 at 7:25 pm #705878
SmittyParticipantNever “bragged” about downsizing, and if I did I didn’t mean to.
IIRC the discussion had to do with downsizing as a result of O’s presumed policy decisions (made clear during the election) and their impact to biz on taxes, healthcare costs, etc. My contention (from just one company) was that job layoffs for Nov-Jan of 2008 could be attributed to O as well and not to W.
October 19, 2010 at 10:24 pm #705879
anonymeParticipantSmitty, I hate to tell you this but Obama was inaugurated on January 20, 2009. How is he responsible for layoffs Nov-Jan 2008?
October 20, 2010 at 12:19 am #705880
JoBParticipantAnonyme.
Didn’t you know?
Dmitri’s crowd thought the sky was falling so they pulled it down before it could fall on them
It’s Obama’s fault. If he hadn’t been elected they wouldn’t have had to do that.
Heavy heavy sarcasm report.
Sorry smitty but am posting by phone and it’s hard to get the auto spell to believe in you:(
October 20, 2010 at 3:31 am #705881
redblackParticipantsmitty: prove it.
show me how a tax cut ever produced a job.
anywhere. ever.
and don’t try using george w. bush. i’m on to that old trick. as a matter of fact, i believe i saw you try that one on usenet a few years ago.

JanSParticipantOctober 20, 2010 at 4:04 am #705883
redblackParticipantwell, there you go.
mint has proven that tax cuts actually kill jobs and increase poverty.
case closed, smitty.
it’s disgusting that any american would believe in supply-side economics after 30 years of this b.s.
October 20, 2010 at 9:52 am #705884
HMC RichParticipantInteresting conclusion. Let us clarify a few things. Extending the Bush tax cuts will allow tax rates to stay the same. Not much of anything will change. There would not be any NEW growth incentives. It would not be a tax cut. If not extended it would become Obama’s tax hike and it will affect everyone.
Allowing those tax rates to expire will hurt business confidence and stifle job creation. Confidence in the economy will shrink even more. Conversely when the business sector had confidence under Reagan and Clinton, we had some pretty good times and people were hired.
Small businesses hire the majority of the workers. Businesses cut staff even before actual revenue declines just from speculative economic downturns or major negative events (9/11)
For example, a few years ago I saw an article about Starbucks. They were going to cut some stores and jobs despite the fact that they were going to make (the exact numbers escape me) 63 million profit for that quarter? or year? which was a decline in projected numbers. Because projected revenues were less than anticipated the business took steps to minimize possible future losses in case the economy weakened more. If only government would act in such a way.
The sales staff I worked with a few years ago were deeply affected just because business confidence was low and budgets were excruciatingly reduced. In fact some people lost their jobs because the company I worked for did not make their goals.
So when Smitty said Oct/Nov of 2008, he was correct because once we knew Obama was the man and the financial meltdown started, executives went into cutback mode. During our current financial and economic recession, the only area where we have seen real growth has been in government jobs. Somehow that just doesn’t seem right to me.
Reductions in capital gains helps businesses and consumers. Obama wants to raise that rate and bring the death tax to 55%!!!
Such moves do not inspire confidence for the business sector. Couple that with upcoming health care costs which are already rising, you have a recipe for a minimalist recovery and possibly another recession.
Lowering tax rates at various times has spurred revenue to come into the federal government coffers. Kennedy, Reagan, Bush. Spending needs to be curtailed by our politicians.
Redblack, supply side economics did not cause other economic downturns throughout our history. Bad business and bad government have caused most of our problems. But wealth creation has also flourished under the free market system more so than any other. I salute the risk the small business owner takes.
Here is an article which addresses tax cut myths. http://www.heritage.org/Research/Reports/2010/06/The-Three-Biggest-Myths-About-Tax-Cuts-and-the-Budget-Deficit
I would ask you to read it.
Read this also from the CATO institute. http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=12172
Until businesses and consumers feel good about the economy, many of us will remain unemployed or…. many of those who are complaining need to retrain in areas where there is a growth trend which can be fairly difficult when you need to pay the rent.
October 20, 2010 at 1:27 pm #705885
redblackParticipantstarbucks is not a small business.
as i keep saying ad nauseum, obama’s “tax hike” won’t affect small businesses. he’s reducing – and even eliminating – capital gains taxes for the little guy and maintaining or increasing taxes for the top 2% – because they can afford it. in other words, the president is trying to encourage the wealthy to invest in the economy instead of taking profits, which will be taxed at a higher rate if democrats can break republican road blocks or convince them to play along.
and i really couldn’t care less about wall street’s confidence. the middle class is learning to fare for itself without those clowns.
here’s what i hear from conservatives, as translated by your latest post:
“we are going to hoard our money and not encourage economic activity unless we get our tax cuts.”
does that sound about right?
now please tell me when, since 2008, obama or congress has raised anyone’s taxes. and since taxes are and have been low, then the wealthy should have been investing in job growth like crazy, right? and tax receipts should have been exploding, right?
oh, i see. it’s just the threat of regulation and taxation that’s stifling the economy. it has nothing to do with wages, foreclosures, jobs leaving the u.s., profit-taking, or the supply side failing to supply.
October 20, 2010 at 1:28 pm #705886
SmittyParticipantHMC, spot on. We started anticipating an Obama victory in October and made contingency plans accordingly. Once elected, those plans were put into place, so those “cool graphs” that supposedly illustrate “saved or created jobs” should attribute Nov 2008 – January 2009 job loss numbers to BO, imo.
But get ready! Even though Jan linked to Huffpo you will get called out for linking to CATO and Heritage – what these folks don’t realize is that’s it’s difficult to link these kinds of stories in the LMSM because they don’t run them!

CarsonParticipantSmitty,
Is this the same fantasy fortune 250 company that you intimidate the employees and only hire women with, um, healthy chests? I always get confused when you get to story telling time.
October 20, 2010 at 5:01 pm #705888
SmittyParticipantThat may be my personal preference Carson, but I would never have that in the criteria for hiring practices.
I prefer healthy brains that help me mitigate excess taxes and healthcare costs……
