I saw the posts about Mountains to Sound’s gear swap this weekend. I’m a newbie skiier (taking my 3rd lesson tomorrow yay!) but have snowboarded (not well) for several years since college. I like skiing better and I’m wondering if this is a good place for a beginner to find skis without knowing much about what to look for? Or is this more of the kind of event where you already need to know what you’re doing to find what you need? Lots and lots of clearance sales at all the local gear stores so I might hit those up soon too, just curious if I need to set aside some time to visit the swap too since I’m heading up to the mountain for my last lesson tomorrow.

Hard to say, tricky but I’d suggest that you’d be well-served to have someone more knowledgeable about skiing with you.

The reason I say that is because there’s been a number of changes in basic ski types over the last decade – shaped skis, mid-fats, etc. that respond differently to different types of skiers and terrain.

Fortunately, most of the improvements have been to make it easier to get down the hill with less exertion but your height, weight and level of aggressiveness all factor in to picking something that not only works today but will last you a few years as you improve.

If you do go and pick up a pair of skis take them to a qualified shop for setup. That has to be done correctly for safety.
