Volunteer opportunities to clean the oil mess in the gulf?

I’d love to volunteer to help clean up some of the mess BP’s gushing geyser is causing.

Do you know of any volunteer opportunities for those of us living up here? Most of the information I’ve found says they are trying to (very understandably) limit volunteers to those living in that region. I’m willing do everything I can from up here, but I’d also really like to get my hands dirty cleaning up.

Those pictures are HORRIFIC! What a terrible mess, My heart aches a little more everyday as this story continues to play out.

Thanks for the tip, LKT. I’ll take a look at the resources they have linked to. So far, it still appears that volunteers are being sought from the local/affected communities.

And EmmyJane, thanks for the offer! He’ll be just fine at home with my wife if I can go down there. And for the record, he is good with both cats and other dogs. :)

Hey Golfer, like you, I am so very concerned, sadden, outraged, it is too painful to go on. I am also, much like yourself, not willing to stand by & not get involved! I feel COMPELLED to DO something. I have thought a lot about this, think about it throught out my day. I watch the broadcasts of the BP vips, I have seen the pictures they haunt me! I have come to the conclusion that I need to do something about the future.

As I suspected much like with Katrina, physical help may not be needed yet,unlike Katrina, this is a much, dare I say, with respect due, bigger problem. I want to take what ever steps I can to make sure WE put into place laws that no longer make it legal to drill off US shores. No more. The dude does NOT abide!

OK so I am not the Sunday, banner carryin’ type, again respect, is there any petition that has been started? Perhaps my naiveté is showing? I want to learn how we move forward.
