CarrascoMemberThis is an oft repeated complaint, but why aren’t the dog owners leashing their dogs in Lincoln Park?
Last nightI had a class of plein aire painters working near one of the paths and I counted at least 6 dogs off leash within 2 hours, and two of them, extremely friendly and rambunctious golden retrievers came over to visit and clomp all over the papers and brushes, paints and knock over water of my students. Their owner gave us an airy “sorry” and continued down the path with his dogs running free all over the place. This sort of thing has happened before.
I like dogs, and not like some people, am not afraid of dogs…BUT ISN’T IT THE LAW THAT DOGS BE LEASHED IN PUBLIC PARKS? Can this be enforced or is it a law that’s too hard to police?

Yeah . . . that’s about the size of it. There just aren’t enough cops in the world to police all the foolish, trashy behavior.
Maybe if more people would bust on the careless dog owners, but it’s hard, you know, when there are so many dog owners out there doing this. It’s a cultural thing, really, like speeding, littering, driving while yapping, spitting on the sidewalk . . .
It just ain’t gonna change until the culture does. And that’s a tall order.
I like the “wall of shame” idea, bebe. But you know what? None of the dogs or the owners on that site look very ashamed. In fact, the dogs look kind of cute.

queseraMemberI have a really old dog and was walking her in Schmitz Park. An off leash dog acted really aggressively towards her and the owner grabbed her dog and said “she never acts this way!” Of course, we saw the same dog 10 minutes later, still off leash, and this time she was even more aggressive. I really should have talked to the owner about “umm, you just learned your dog can be vicious. Put it on a leash!” I guess as dog owners, we need to drop our Seattle niceness and call each other out. If her dog had attacked mine, mine would have really gotten hurt. The owner was just choosing to be in denial.

anonymeParticipantI’ve found that confronting this entitled group of elitists rarely does any good at all. If possible, the best way to address the issue is by getting a license # and/or address and report them online. Animal control does actually follow up on these reports, but the offender will not be cited unless you sign an affadavit.

chrismaParticipantMaybe velo_nut was on to something with his 9mm solution for this problem.
Seriously though, people: call friggin’ animal control when you see this kind of thing. Everyone is walking around with a cell phone these days…put the number in your phone and use it.
I witnessed the staff at High Point Community Center do this very thing when someone was playing ball with his dog in the tennis courts there. The dog was fenced in on the court, but still off leash. Animal Control was there within 15 minutes and that guy got a $100 citation. Kind of overkill, in my opinion; the staff could have come out and told him to put the dog on the leash, but I’m sure it was a lesson learned.
If you feel that disregard for the leash law has become the norm (I would agree), do something that might actually make a difference.
Seattle Animal Shelter’s complaint number is: 206.386.7387 and here’s the page where they list what they enforce:
http://www.seattle.gov/animalshelter/animal-control-overview.htm
As always, if you’re witnessing or involved in a dangerous situation involving an animal, call 911.
Enough complaints seems to have gotten some additional speed enforcement on 35th, Admiral Way, and the bridge. If animal control gets enough complaints about specific parks, they may well do the same.

velo_nutParticipantThanks Chrisma!
I was walking my 11 year old boxer at Lincoln park last month and an off leash mutt came bounding off the beach towards us. I tried to put myself in between but it was to no avail. I ended up stomping on the aggressive dog and getting an earful AND threats from the owner and his sons.
I wish I could have stomped on the owner instead. My dogs face is still cut up and not healing correctly.

ElizagraceParticipantI would second what Chrisma said – call and file a complaint. I did and not only did the person on the phone help out and listen, they even called me back two days later to give me an update. They let me know that while they didn’t find the person I was complaining about – the repeat offender with two crazy hound dogs – they did ticket 3 other people, and they said they only were in one area.
What he did say that was really helpful was to call if I ever saw they get our of their house/car and give those details since then they could follow up with a personal visit… dum dum dum…
