    1. When you’re not at home, keep your blinds or drapes open.

Ask yourself what does a burglar like more than an unlocked door or window?

To operate without being seen, of course.

So when you leave your house, keep the blinds open so passers by or your neighbors can see what’s going on inside.

The excuse for keeping blinds closed, “I don’t want the burglars to be able to see my valuables” makes no sense. Most burglars don’t spend much time casing certain houses for particular things to steal. They bank on the fact that most of us have computers, electronics, jewelry and cash inside. They look in your windows to see if you’re home, not to take inventory of what’s inside.

This goes for businesses too. Keep your blinds open when you’re closed.

    2. Keep your porch/exterior lights on all night long.

Again, a burglar or car prowler doesn’t want to be seen, they want to operate under cover of darkness.

I’m always amazed to see my neighbors turn their porch lights off when they go to bed. When the police or your neighbors go past your house at 2 or 3 AM you want them to be able to see your house, not just darkness.

And if your address is posted on your house, keeping a porch light on allows emergency responders to see your address when you call them.
