this is just huge. While not directly West seattle related, there are plenty of rescue organizations that could benefit from this.
This is just amazing.

inactiveMemberHey HH,
Thanks for sharing that for all. Though I did not go through it completely with a fine-toothed comb :), I noted a couple of things.
First, that in Dr. Wheedon’s paper, it states that this solution can be stored at room temperature, which would seem so much more practical and affordable (?) to rescue peeps?
I am wondering if tech’s will be licensed to do the procedure, because that would make it an even more accessible procedure.
Finally, if state Wildlife Services (hello!) people could trap coyote pups, we would be on the way to solving a national issue of population management. OR, alternatively, if wildlife rehabbers were licensed to do the procedure in conjunction with state wildlife trappers in urban habitats
Hope it is as good as it sounds and that our local WSB forum veterinary experts chime in…

hammerheadParticipantOnly a Vet, could do it.
As far as most vets go, well it cost about/average at a local vets NO coupons, about 200.00 for a spay if not more, and neuter as high as $150.00. While I do not like to “dis” vets they have to make a buck. (I can get it done for($15.00)
So we’ll have to see what the United States Vet association will say about it, just because it would mean less money for them.
As far as the wild life sorry you and I disagree on that one. I would rather fix a few more humans than the wildlife.
While I don’t know what is “native” or not “native” (yes I know feral cats are NOT native) coyotes, raccoon and some certain species of squirrels are native and other are not. Let them be.:)
This is just huge, it will be interesting who can buy who in the lobbying game of things.

DBPMemberThis has GREAT potential if it pans out. However, they are being wildly optimistic in their “vision” of “Full Adoption by 2015.”
I can guaran-god-dang-tee you that THAT ain’t gonna happen. Even if the injection has ZERO side effects and you give it away for FREE, you will ALWAYS have a certain percentage of people who will say: “No way. Not on MY dog you don’t.”
And no, these are not the purebred poodle owners, I’m talking about. These are the pit-bull owners who see the dog as an extension of their own manhood.
That’s not a reason to be against this new procedure. They just need to get real about the acceptance rate. I’m estimating that perhaps 50% of the pet owners who refuse surgical sterilization for Bowzer will go for this new injection sterilization.
In the meantime the struggle to win their hearts minds (and testicles) rages on . . .

hammerheadParticipantYes DP that is correct there are those who don’t not want to fix their males or females cats and dogs because their “manly” hood would go away. Hell I am more manly than most men. LOL They make FAKE testicle for dogs, seriously is it really that important? NO
I am very realistic about this, but if it can make it easier than great. Hell there are people who allow kittens and puppies being born in the “rescue” world and there is no reason for that either.
I see this more of a benefit for 3rd world countries where countless dogs and puppies are being born and just in horrible shape. (yes cats too but not tested yet on cats)
It is a big pipe dream and understand it is a just a DREAM. Sadly:(

service dog academyMemberSterilization isnt going to solve the entire problem. Education is the key.

hammerheadParticipantNo I disagree as DP says above there are those people who do want to fix their dogs or cats. All the education in world will not change that. As quoted in the article:
Ignorance does not relieve you of responsibility. We do not hold people unaccountable if they shake a baby simply because they claim they didn’t know it would cause damage or death. It is your responsibility to know these things.
We can not change people who abuse their animals. Puppy/kittens mills will never go away. I run into people ALL the time that say” oh the cat/dog should have at least one litter.
Again “rescuers” are part of the problem too. When the allow a litter to born ON purpose, because they don’t believe in aborting, they are basically “sticking” the needle in a animal that is stuck in a shelter waiting for a forever home. Yet they have adopt a thons trying to find home for animals that are already born. (Not talking about FCAT or FAF) Talk about all the work I do going s**t and a hand basket.
I appreciate you as a trainer and offering in the past to help those in need, probably getting the wrong breed but that dog was “cute”. Of course pits get the worse rap ever. Local rescues ship dogs from other parts of the country because all we have in local shelters are pits or pit mixes and no one wants a pit bull because they are to “dangerous”.
Then the purebred dog rescues most of those dogs that go in those rescue are SO screwed because of bad breeding again who wants to deal with that. Most people want that perfect dog right out of a shelter, like the article and trainers say, it is about training and getting the right dog for your home.

DBPMember>>Hell I am more manly than most men.
And I more womanly than most women.
Maybe we should hook up.
