I got a ticket mailed to me for turning right on the red at Avalon & 35th (without the full stop). Now I suppose I could have done a little roll on this, pretty safe to say that we all do at least once in a while but someone’s going to have to show me the some video to convince me.

Anybody have experience with these tickets? What kind of video do they have to confirm a full stop? I thought they were just still cameras.

    Thanks

hmmm…maybe not. Guess it’s time for you to come to a full stop, huh.

Sorry about the ticket…hope it wasn’t too much.

Years ago I was ticketed for rolling a stop sign, I decided to challenge the ticket (mostly becuase I didn’t have my insurance card and was ticketed for that too), after providing proof of insurance, I admitted that my stop at the stop sign was brief but I did feel that I had come to a complete stop before continuing. He reduced it to a non-moving violation. I say challenge the ticket.

I cannot for the life of me find the page where the specifics of how these work are discussed but yes, they have video and still capabilities and you should have gotten a link you could use to view the video, as seen on this Santa Ana, CA page – no?

Found it – see last part of this:

for sure, the one on 35th and Thistle is messed up. Going to fight a ticket there in a few weeks. Photo CLEARLY shows the car stopped. Sheeesh.

Yep, sounds like you needed to come to a *complete* stop. This topic was just brought up by miws here on the forums a week or two back. It’s become really dangerous for us pedestrians as people seem to be increasingly treating stop signs and signals as “rolling stops.” I never trust cars to actually stop while I’m in a crosswalk, as so many people planning to turn right just roll right into the crosswalk without checking for people.

If you did come to a complete stop, fine, but it doesn’t sound like it from your account. In that case, I believe you deserve the ticket.

Sorry about the ticket PDieter. It was I who posted extensively about these tickets. I spoke with the SPD guy in charge of this program. There are three pictures taken and examined before a ticket is issued. One as the car approaches the red light; another still photo taken as the car passes through the red light and finally a video of it all from beginning to end. I haven’t seen this, but I understand that ticketed car owners can view the pics and video online.

Fortunately the ticket is not a moving violation and therefor has no affect on car insurance rates. I haven’t heard reliably of anyone “beating” these tickets.

If you want, you can click on my name at the end of this post and read what I wrote several months ago. I believe I might have named the SPD employee who was very responsive and helpful.

grr: Wouldn’t your car always appear stopped in a still photo?

indeed :) But stopped at the line, NOT in the intersection.

    grr…

that is a point. i often pull into the crosswalk if it is unoccupied before i stop because cars parked on the streets often limit visibility.

i imagine that would be read as a rolling stop by those cameras.

good thing i almost never turn right at thistle since the visibility is often limited there and i use that intersection a lot.

pulling off of thistle going north on 35th, you have to pull into the intersection to see oncoming traffic. it’s a wonder i have never received a ticket.

    SarahScoot…

the crosswalk dance is a problem. i won’t enter a crosswalk unless the car is stopped either… which only slows things down further… even at a crosswalk with a light.

when driving i am similarly over-cautious with other cars.

i know that it slows things down and adds to the frustration drivers feel…

but it’s a crapshoot out there and i am going to do what it takes to increase my odds of surviving it.
