Is there anywhere I’m permitted to post this? Just thought it was a really wonderful story. I’m inspired by this woman’s courage and beauty:

Thanks mom2soren. I saw the story this morning too and was truly moved. I had thought to put it up here but I am so unfamiliar with the t.v. program (I can’t even think of the name) that I thought it best for someone else to post. Her simple story and beautiful voice touched me deeply.

Not only the look on Simon’s face, but even Piers Morgan looked gobsmacked! And Ant and Dec were rooting for her.

Britains Got Talent is still doing audition rounds this month, in May the serious competition begins.

check out the competition. Stavros Flatley cracks me up!

I see this clip on youtube but I ask, why so much fuss? Her voice is not the best or even perfect. I think this just make people feel better about how unattractive people are treated in our daily lives, but is not going to change anything once forgotten.

Maybe we can find more beauty in every day people all the time instead of passing a judgment by looking at them first?

“During [Susan] Boyle’s appearance on CBS’ The Early Show on April 17, [Patti] LuPone phoned in from Birmingham, Michigan to say she was moved to tears while watching the clip on YouTube with her husband. “Susan, you’ve got pluck, girl!” said LuPone, who explained the challenges of singing the song. “I saw it was pretty powerful on YouTube, so I can imagine what it was like live. Susan has so much courage.”

Patti Lupone played ‘Fantine’ in the original production of ‘Les Miserables’ on Broadway and made ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ her own.

Opinions can vary on the merits of Boyle’s performance, of course, but your suggestion that we would all do well not to judge people by how they look is one that I take to heart.

Thank you. Again, I cried. Britan’s got talent always makes me do that. Gin the dancing dog, Paul Potts, and now Susan Boyle!

Ditto TigreDelNorte. I think all the attention this woman is getting is ridiculous, and I’d feel hurt and insulted if I were her. Yes, she has a good voice, but the reason she’s considered newsworthy is because she’s a single middle-aged woman who’s never kissed anyone and isn’t conventionally beautiful and – my god! – she can sing.

Really? Since when is vocal prowess determined by being beautiful, young, or having a significant other?

This speaks more to the shallowness of our culture than anything else.

Apparently, most everyone expected a pathetic showing when she stepped on stage, and she exceeded their expectations… but please, think about what those expectations were based on. I find it really sad.

Edited to add: for those who have said she has courage, why do you say that? I’m not saying she’s not courageous (I don’t know her, so I really have no clue), but it seems people are saying she has courage because she was on national TV. Does that make everyone on TV courageous, or is it only courageous if you don’t fit a stereotype of beauty?

And edited again to add that I’m not trying to knock this woman down, as she is talented. I just think it’s insulting to hear everyone’s shock at how talented she is.

    she had a voice…

and maybe once she was almost pretty.. most women are when they are young…

and she had a dream.. to sing in front of a large audience…

    and people dismissed her.

not only did she achieve her dream..

but she didn’t give it up just because she got older and there wasn’t a make-over big enough to make her look like she should sing well

and she didn’t fold when given her chance…

i think that makes for a good story.

Sarah..u took the words right out of my mouth….lol I could add more, but ahhh…. I won’t since we have a lot of puffcakes here and don’t want to hurt their feelings.

    ROFLOL..

    Puffcakes?????

do you mean what is called a “traditionally built woman” in the Ladies Number 1 detective Agency?

jiggers..we rest our case…you dismissed her as a human being, a woman, and a talented woman, at that, because she’s a “puffcase”? Are you serious? How shallow can a man, a human being be?

Sarah…the courage of this woman comes from knowing exactly that, that our culture will dismiss her because of her outward appearance, not because of her inner beauty and talent, which obviously is great, unlike some on here, but I don’t want to add anything, because I don’t want to hurt their feelings.:}~

The probelm is she is not so talented when you get down to it. Being able to carry a tune does not a talented person make.

People are getting excited about this woman because she embodies imperfection in the way we (society) define it. Her fifteen minute of fame is almost over and you will not hear anything more about her after that.

Susan Boyle is “underdog” right now.

JoB and JanS… I think we’re interpreting Jiggers’ “puffcakes” comment differently. I don’t think he was referring to “women of size” but rather people who take things personally and/or offend easily. I could be wrong, though.

My inspiration from her has more to do with her attitude that it doesn’t matter what others think of me, I gonna do it anyways.

The most successful people are those that do the opposite of what others tell them to do.

I liked her ‘eff U’ attitude.

I disagree with those who think her fame is based solely on her appearance. She does look like a normal woman, sure. She’s a regular gal who was picked on most of her life, unemployed, took care of her ailing mother until she died, has never been kissed, had very little formal training, and has an amazing voice and courageous, spunky attitude. She’s making her debut at age 48! Also, she has thus far not received a makeover. I hope she continues to resist & just be real.

Also, I think the song choice hit a nerve for many people. Many (if not most) of us feel that life gets in the way of achieving our dreams.

You make a good point Erik. She did not care what they think, which makes her brave.

But what make me the most angry is people making a big deal over her when most the time they are not so nice to people like her anway! Maybe in private they are not so kind and just want to make a show in public?

“Maybe in private they are not so kind and just want to make a show in public?”

When I first saw the video (and times after that)I wept with joy for the personal triumph of this woman and the joy and pride she was feeling. I was doing this in private; not making a public show.

I also knew that there would be those who would spin this triumph in a different way. There are always people who wish to diminish “good.”

I would like to hear her version of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Ave Maria” and “He Will Raise Me Up on Eagle’s Wings.” And quite a few hymns from the Gather Hymnal.
