Why in the world would someone order special “Square Dancing” License Plates? Is that really something you want to advertise?? Please, shed some light on this for me. I mean really…I enjoy playing Scrabble, but would scoff at the idea of ever paying money for a Scrabble license plate. Plus, it’s just ridiculously funny. There was a stand-up comic years ago who said that Square Dancing is for people with no imagination…they simply do what they’re told!! “Swing your partner ’round and ’round, now turn her ’round and upside down”. Clearly, I like to do my own dancing, at my own speed and preferably at a big club with drinks and stuff.

Don’t know, Square Dancing just strikes me as right-wing, middle-America, plain-vanilla HIGHlarious. And to think there are people in/around Seattle with Square Dancing plates? Brutha, please.

People like to “belong” and enjoy identifying themselves and finding others of a like mind. So why not? If someone has a chat in a parking lot with someone else who enjoys square dancing, then for that person it was worth the few extra bucks to buy the vanity plate.

There was a stand up comic not too many years ago who did a whole series of jokes about Scrabble players too. That doesn’t make that activity any more or less valid or enjoyable.

I don’t know if “NewGuy” says that you are new to Seattle or to the forums. But suggesting that Square Dancing is “right-wing” is way off the mark. There are a number of alternativey type left wingers square dancing every week in the greater Seattle area; and beyond.

Hmmmmm….I dunno….I kinda like the Scrabble Plate idea!

Of course, it could only be an option for Vanity Plates, and not the standard State issued.

It would be fun to try to figure out the owner’s message, from the scrambled letters! Although I can see a problem for the Police having to radio in such a plate….”1-Adam-12, in pursuit of a dark gray sedan Scrabble Plate: ‘V-S-E-L-I’, Now *I* think it’s ‘ELVIS’, but my partner thinks it’s ‘LIVES’.” ;-)

NewGuy – My knee jerk reaction is to agree with you because I personally cannot stand any external messaging displayed on a vehicle. That stuff just screams, “LOOK AT ME I LIKE THIS STUFF RIGHT NOW”.

However, as an admirer of all forms of dance, I don’t want to set sail on the anti-Square Dancing regatta because I suspect my RN Grandparents were secretly involved in Masonic Square Dancing rituals.

Let’s step back for a moment and consider the story of Lars and Barb Hansen as it relates to Square Dancing.

First a lovely picture of the Hansens in their Square Dancing attire:

Next, the brief but telling story of love once forgotten, born anew thanks to the majesty of Square Dancemanship:

I am seriously laughing out loud at work from that picture -with a little tear!! That picture ought to be on the license plate itself.

Okay, okay…I probably just lumped in my disdain for right-wingers altogether. Strike that. But I do stand by the ridiculousness of this form of dancing altogether.

    NewGuy..

saying that square dancers lack imagination because people are just doing what they are told is akin to saying that anyone working on a team building something larger themselves lacks imagination because they are following instructions.

clearly you have never square danced… if just one person fails to follow those directions accurately, complex patterns crumble into rugby scrums almost immediately…

it might be amusing to those on the sidelines.. but not to the dancers caught in the crumble…

i suspect somewhere.. there is someone.. wondering how you can stand to do whatever it is that brings you joy… and shakes their head when you dance to your own tune.

in my own house, hubby programs for all week for a living and still is never happier than with his nose buried in code for his own amusement or edification on weekends.

I shake my head wondering why he can’t find more entertaining things to do… and he wonders why i spend so much time just talking on the forum:)))

I’d sport a WSB Forum vanity plate… or at least a vanity plate frame… and i suspect others would too:)

    New Guy…

are sky divers who jump in unison to make patterns also ridiculous?

What about dancers on stage.. ballet.. jazz. hip hop???

although it is monday and i am lacking in imagination this morning.. i am sure the world is full of examples of things we stop to watch in awe that are nothing more than groups of individuals moving together…

like the flight of geese in the fall…

Its fine to “stand by” your belief that square dancing is not for you. For me, its the ridicule that makes it uncomfortable NewGuy.

As a matter of fact, those “Riverdance” troups also strike me as quite funny.

    shhhh..

don’t tell.. but right wingers in all forms are mostly people too…

ok.. some might be aliens or devils.. like cheney… i hope he’s an alien…. but most are people..

and even democrats do some pretty funny things…

I am always amazed at the endurance of those riverdance folks… that takes a ton of energy.

As a “right-winger”, I’m offended to be considered a square dancer!

J/K – This actually reminds me of my favorite lawyer joke.

A man walks into a bar, stands on a chair and yells, “All lawyers are A**HOLES!”

Another man comes up to him and says, “You know, that really offends me, what you just said.”

So the first man says, “I’m sorry, are you a lawyer?”

The second man says, “No, I’m an a**hole.”

    Ah, devil discomfort….

We’re never going to get away from it unless this country goes bankrupt and falls into totalitarian and / or ecumenical rule. Can you imagine what license plates would look like then?!?!

Perhaps one lesson Michael Flatley taught us was to “…keep on your toes, work your ankles, and as God is my witness beef up your thighs. Ok, from the top….5,6,7,8…”

do you have to use sports straps to keep the glasses on when you dance?

love the sense of humor this morning but i am going to have to pull my big girl panties up and go face the big bad world… got stuff to do.

    thanks for the giggles…

As a proud right winger, you had better watch what you say. If square dancers are organized enough to get a license plate, they might organize into a militia and those pirouettes could be dangerous to your health.

Now the only other problem is that there is institutional racism. There are no rectangle dancers, triangle dancers, and they certainly will not do the rhombus. Tread lightly newguy.

i really don’t know how to break this to you.. but right wingers don’t get to claim square dancing. square dancing isn’t political.. it isn’t even racist.. or ageist.. or sexist… or homophobic.. or…

they are much too busy having fun working as teams to be devisive… some of them have been dancing together for decades… in spite of political or religious disagreements that might otherwise separate friends.

the only thing to fear from square dancers is that their enthusiasm might infect you and you could easily find yourself hooked…

    square dancing is addictive…

I agree with JoB. Square dancing is the DMZ of dance.

Let’s not forget Lars and Barb Hansen, and the lessons they taught us through square dancing…

“Good things do come to those that wait.”

JoB you may be right but there are some very traditional ideas in this group but I concur and do not claim they are of one view. Here are some points about them.

Reagan signed an order making the modern square dance the American Folk Dance of 1982 – 83.

They have a 10 commandments list on behavior, like friendliness, acting thy age, even cleanliness etc.

    They have a dress code

The use of Alcohol and Drugs are strictly forbidden

    Traditional Gender roles are maintained.

8,000,000 have tried to learn square dancing.

Maybe New Guy was a bit right. I didn’t know.

I didn’t know they were that regimented. I will give them nod of respect and a wide berth, also because of the way the dresses puff way out.

Growing up Wisconsin, I was partial to the polka, waltz’s and a fox trot. Roll out the barrel! Loved those Polka Rendezvous or Friday fish night and then the accordian players would stumble in. I can’t remember any of it now.

Seems like the only Rock and Roll song they would play was WIPEOUT. Toothless accordian players trying to Rock Out. aahhh what memories.

Her Majesty’s Combine Rick – I am a HUGE fan of the wipeout and I believe it was by the Ventures, no? Duane Eddy is another great surf music guitarist and his stuff is #1.

Folks, I can tell you right now that if you want a wonderful brew, the Big Al’s is the palace to find it. I like it so much.

For the record, I like ALLYOU PEOPLE and I like you all RIGHT NOW.

Good Morning JanS – Let’s just say I’ve been programmed with an appreciation of all music; some new, some not so new.
