f your child is an elementary student in Seattle Public Schools, there is a good chance that your school will have the opportunity to replace your Everyday Math curriculum with Singapore Math (American version called Math in Focus: Singapore) starting this fall (2014-15).

Despite the overwhelming community support for Math in Focus (65%) district staff has put forth a recommendation of Pearson’s enVision Math. This decision was made without taking into account data from other districts currently using each curriculum and without the community input they half-heartedly collected.

The School Board is set to vote on an amendment to the elementary math adoption this Wednesday, June 4th. Due to the fact that community input was given 0% weight in the adoption process, many members of the School Board are looking to give schools the opportunity to choose between Singapore (Math in Focus) and the district’s suggestion of enVision.

The choice would come down to what is best for each school community. If you want Singapore for your child’s school, you must: (1) Tell the School Board and Superintendent Banda (2) Tell your school’s principal (3) Tell your child’s teacher and (4) Tell others in your community.

Unless you follow every minute of every meeting that goes on at the John Stanford Center, you may not know that this choice is even an option. It can be if you RAISE YOUR VOICE NOW.

Math adoptions last for 7 years. Let your voice be heard!

No matter what, the math curriculum for K-5 is changing this fall. If you have an opinion on Singapore or enVision, make sure your voice is heard before it really is too late.
