BZooParticipantAny recent experiences with someone who can clean the moss off of my single story roof? Had an estimate of $225, but that sounds high – small house. Unable to do it myself, so I would like to call a reputable person. Any ideas?

KenParticipant225 sounds good.
I think mine was 249 or something close.
My three other estimates were higher. These guys were on time, fast and careful around the dog area. Gutter cleaning was included.

Why does the forum software keep hiding one of the phone numbers?

lucky chickMember$225 sounds great to me, but I’d get an estimate from Artisan Windows – they were fabulous and the lowest of all estimate when they cleaned my house (2 stories including roof). Highly recommend them! (Although not sure they are in West Sea – sorry if that’s not allowed!)

BZooParticipantThank you both. It was AA that I called – they were recommended to me by a neighbor who pays $109 for his – that’s why I was questioning it. I’ll call them again, and also try Artisan.

hoffanimalParticipantdoes anyone know the best way to do this if you want to do it yourself?

maplesyrupParticipanthoff I did mine this fall. I spent about $70 on the powdered moss killer (big roof) and then had to sweep it 3 weeks later. All in all it took about 4 hours.
Plus I spent a (very dangerous) hour cleaning my gutters.
I figured those services were super expensive but had I known we were talking under $300, I’d probably have hired out.

jwwsParticipanthoffanimal,
My husband used a pressure washer on our roof moss – did a great job but leaves some yard/deck/window clean-up afterwards. Also check with True Value I think there are some chemical treatments you can spray on to kill the moss as well.

maplesyrupParticipantAnother question – does anyone know if you can get a treatment to prevent moss for several years, and how much it costs if a professional does it?

I am pretty sure I saw zinc strips on sale on the front page of the mccleandos ad this week. Check your recycle bin.
Copper also works.

lucky chickMemberI believe the standard cleaning is supposed to prevent future moss accumulation. The one I got is.

KenParticipantThe spray on and powder treatments will work for maybe a year in this climate. Longer in less rainy areas.
Anything applied is going to wash off eventually.
The galvanized flashing works for decades in some cases since the zinc is leached out as it is combined with rainwater.
The 109.00 price might be for the annual re apply you can sign up for at AA.
I probably will sign up since it only took 6 years for the new roof to become infested and I don’t have any trees that shade the house…
This time of year the algea looks like it could become a problem and my station wagon has moss growing on the bumper.
The joys of Seattle climate are only appreciated after July 5th.
BTW: Pressure washing makes it look good quick but is not good for the roof lifetime estimate.

BZooParticipantThis has been so very helpful. Thank you. I have called AAwindowgutter – got on a regular program with them – the price went down. Nice. Did learn that the initial cleaning is more. But, I went on a twice a year program and think that’ll work fine. It’s worth it not to break my neck!

hoffanimalParticipantThanks all. I am assuming the powdered stuff isn’t too bad for the fishes and their friends. The section of my roof that needs it is pretty flat and low so shoudln’t be too hard (I have been up there before)

KenParticipantdetails on toxicity are in the link I posted up thread. Here it is again :)

sillygrrlParticipantPowdered laundry detergent will also kill the moss on your roof. I apply once or twice a year in the seams where moss grows and then sweep it off. I learned this trick from Home Inspectors that I have worked with.

cookie addictMember“Powdered laundry detergent will also kill the moss on your roof.”
Yes it does, but a soapy roof roof + standing 20+ feet in the air sweeping moss off = possible trip to the ER/your spouse collecting a life insurance check. Home Depot has a Moss out spray that attaches to your garden hose, but I have no problem paying a pro to do the sweeping…
