Okay, I know we were all a little crabby about losing ATM’s in West Seattle, but did anyone else see that you can now deposit checks by scanning them at home? How cool is that?!

Anyway, if the loss of the Safeway branch or the Alki ATM deterred you from getting a BECU account, I hope this restores some of your faith. This is going to eliminate my need to go to an ATM or branch pretty much ever again :)

Edit: sorry, I think I just posted this in the wrong section, and it won’t let me change it. Apologies.

My bank (USAA) offers that plus their iPhone app lets you take photos of a check (which is deposited to your account immediately). And because they don’t have local branches, they waive ATM fees charged by other banks (up to a $15 per month).

I bet my dad can beat up your dad too. ;)

I used it a few weeks ago (with BECU) and was so excited to be able to do it!

how did you learn about it? there’s nothing about this on my most recent BECU statement, so how would I have known? I rarely go to their website; is that how you found out? this is not a service I will likely use, but with all the fallout from recent Alki/Admiral closures, you’d think they would want to let us know about any great new features

Diane, I read a post somewhere online (forget where) that mentioned the online deposits, and sure enough, when I logged onto BECU, there is a tab that gives that as an option.

kellym, yes, it does require a scanner of some sort, as long as you can get the check into .tiff or .jpeg format. You can either use a scanner attached to your computer and upload it directly, or what I had to do is use our copier scanner at work which sends it to me via email, and then had to upload it as a file to BECU.

[snark]erin, obviously this still isn’t good enough! BECU needs to send someone in person to the homes of those who cannot walk to BECU’s ATMs or be bothered to look at the BECU website for this information.

BECU did not personally call me or send a hand-written letter explaining that I can now scan checks from home. That letter or phone call should have included step-by-step directions on how to operate my scanner, and a check to go buy said scanner. Obviously none of this is my responsibility![/snark]

I heard they don’t accept scanned checks from Alki residents.

JoB – absolutely correct! I’ve fixed that, though I opted for “snark” tags over “sarcasm” this time. ;-)

BECU requires those in West Seattle to register their Abacus before driving to Tukwila to make an in person deposit.

Sure, great, they will take my scanned checks and let me deposit them online, but will they send me cash via e-mail? Nooooooooooo! Talk about rotten customer service…

Ooooh, cash via email! That would be a nice feature. I could print it out on my color printer… Multiple copies…

Diane–If you don’t mind an e-mail a couple of times a month, you can sign up for e-news. I think mine came automatically when I signed up for paperless statements. They actually do keep their updates pretty minimal.
