angelescrestParticipantI thought there was something odd about this post from the onset. And then all the anti-librarian/library rant that ensued: hello? Where in the world do you think people who don’t have the means (money/transportation–libraries are on main bus lines, aren’t they?–, etc.)go to select reading material? Well, it’s not to the local bookshop so many of us can afford to love. You should see what the librarian at my school does for the students and the faculty; she is a fountain of ideas and direction for kids whose ability levels are as diverse as their backgrounds. When you think that the city librarians have to deal with adults from the same spectrum as well as the kids, and act as after-school babysitters, as well as maintaining an encyclopedia of info in their brains, heck–no wonder they’re edgy. So Jade wants to torment a librarian? You got nothing better to do? Frankly, I’d prefer to think that that librarian might be helping someone find a job online, than dealing with someone trying to bait him/her by breaking the laws of the library.

ellenaterMemberI was just messing around, btw. This whole forum gets pretty absurd sometimes and I get a kick out of the whole thing.
I think libraries are indispensable and use them all the time. I really do think Oregon’s are better though.

TraciMemberThis whole thing is cracking me up!!!
I love libraries! They’re quiet and have tons of great old books and stuff.
The last time I was in the library, I was in this “I’m going to learn Spanish!!!” kick. So I got a beginners CD. But it wasn’t really a beginners CD… It was actually an advanced CD. I put it in, all PUMPED to learn Spanish, and was overwhelmed with advanced! So I went home, used the library CD to prop open my window (this later because a late fee) and Googled “how to speak Spanish”
I can now tell my friend lisa that she is a nurse.
Really though, I still want to learn Spanish.

FullTiltParticipantI can not believe this thread is still alive. The OP is either a spammer that wants to drive people to his Jade porn site, or really just needs to keep their smelly hippie trotters safely in shoes the next time they go out in public.
and, just because humor translates so poorly in a public forum… I feel I need to point out that the above is mostly in jest. Mostly.

TraciMemberYeah, spammer for sure. But thanks to the people that contribute to WSB, it ended up being funny.

ellenaterMemberya, the humor doesn’t translate. you put that in a blender with nicotine withdrawal and the just plain humorless and not a pretty picture it doth make. Whatever.

Mr. Goh,
Thank you for your email concerning the rules of conduct violation that occurred on November 6, 2008. Your email clearly illustrates the event from your point of view and I appreciate the detail in which it was written.
The Library sets rules for the safety and enjoyment of all that utilize our facilities and I would grant you that some of the rules of conduct may not seem to make a lot of sense to those who get caught up in a violation they clearly did not intend to commit or committed unknowingly.
In regards to the shoes the rules of conduct indicate that one would be in violation of the ROC for “Entering or being in the Library barefoot, without a shirt, with offensive body odor or personal hygiene or being otherwise attired so as to be disruptive to the Library environment.”
Taking you at your word in the account of the events it seems as though you may have been treated to the letter of the rule rather than the spirit of the rule, and while I support both interpretations, I when given the chance, always prefer to take the spirit of the rule approach. Others however, to avoid the appearance of inequity, will take the letter of the rule approach. Again, neither approach is in error.
Given this, even I however, would view the taking off of one’s shoes as a violation of the rule and the fact that a person has socks on vs. no socks would be a matter of semantics.
My conclusion in this matter does not lessen in anyway the importance of the points you raise. The Library periodically reviews its rules of conduct to ensure they are portraying the intent of the rule in question. Your email and the examples you raised will be used in this process when considering this particular rule.
Again, I thank you for your email, your illustrative examples, and your continued patronage of the Library.
Should you have any other questions or information in this matter please feel free to contact me at joe.fithian@spl.org or 206 386 4128

FullTiltParticipantLuckily the library has no rules about not wearing pants. SO as I write this in the Downtown Branch Library, I am wearing only shoes and a t-shirt. I call it “Doing the Pooh Bear”.

WSBKeymasterGJ, there are words in the deleted posts that are against WSB rules. Your use of some of the URLs also borders on spam. Please do not attempt to repost.

wingmeMemberpublic parks, public libraries, what’s the difference?
November 15, 2008 at 7:37 am #646727
ErikParticipantParking strips are public too.
Just got back from walking the dog where we came upon a young woman squatting in the parking strip, pants down round the knees, taking a pee.
I guess if the dog can do it.
