kmMember“What is with the loud Harley drivers coming off the ferries and along Fauntleroy at 6am!! It’s too much. You can hear their little biker gang driving along Fauntleroy ALL the way up the hill and it wakes me up! Can’t stand Harleys! We can’t operate chain-saws until 8am due to noise violation laws…they shouldn’t be able to make so much noise with their bikes that early either!” posted by request from KM’s dad who lives on the hill above McDonalds.

WSBKeymasterKM, you might want to talk with the Fauntleroy Community Association, which has surfaced this issue many times before:

JiggersMemberNo need an alarm clock to get you up then.

karenParticipantIt might not be loud pipes. All the bikes are first on and first off – so it may just be that there are a lot of bikes at the same time.

ToddinWestwoodMemberI am a motorcyclist (no Harley) and I live on Roxbury. They do come in waves off the ferry and they are very loud. I does wake me up about 5:05, and 5:40 am.
Within the motorcycle community there has been many discussions about the need for legislation regarding motorcycle noise levels.
Here is a link to the AMA’s position:
http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/positions/sound.asp
* All motorcyclists should be sensitive to community standards and respect the right of fellow citizens to enjoy a peaceful environment.
* Motorcyclists should not modify exhaust systems in a way that will increase sound to a level that is offensive. This includes the installation of unmuffled exhaust systems.
* Organizers of motorcycle events should take steps–through advertising, peer pressure and enforcement–to make excessively loud motorcycles unwelcome.
* Motorcycle retailers should discourage the installation and use of excessively loud replacement exhaust systems, including unmuffled âstraight pipes.â
* The motorcycle industry, including aftermarket suppliers of replacement exhaust systems, should adopt responsible product design and marketing policies aimed at limiting the cumulative impact of excessive motorcycle sound.
* Manufacturers producing motorcycles that meet the appropriate federal standards should continue to educate their dealers and customers that louder exhaust systems can decrease the performance of motorcycles.
* Law enforcement agencies should fairly and consistently enforce appropriate laws against excessive vehicle sound and other sources of undesirable sound.
* The motorcycle industry and the safety community should educate customers and riders that excessive sound can be fatiguing, thus impairing good riding skills and judgment, making riding less enjoyable.

cjboffoliParticipantToddinWestwood: Thanks for including this excellent summary. I’m also in the camp of hating the noise pollution from loud pipes. But I’m all for motorcycle enthusiasts who want to ride responsibly. Not sure I buy the “loud pipes save lives” excuse.

JiggersMemberHahahahaha..I want to see someone tell a 6-4 220 pound biker on his Harley to be quiet in the morning please…lol

rockhillsMemberIs it the same bikers who like to blast out of the Junction late at night? Can’t tell you how many times they have woken me up.

KBearParticipantLoud pipes overcompensate for the under-endowed.

MargLMemberlol – we have a couple loud ‘cycle riders that blast up the hill on 104th to 35th. I always find myself muttering “Yeah yeah, we can all hear what a big man you are…”
I suppose that begs the question – what’s considered an “excessively loud motorcycle”? Harley’s are loud by -design-.
I find them excessively loud and annoying. Obviously folks that buy and ride them don’t think they’re too loud. They also don’t have a problem with buying them to use for commuting to and from work at 6AM.
Can the Government say “You can’t ride a motorcycle that makes a noise louder than ## decibels earlier than X-o’clock” without implying “Don’t buy a Harley”?

KenParticipantThe motorcycle pack from the ferry is just another annual sign of spring here in WS. It was larger and louder in the mid 90’s I think. There are fewer Harley’s now.
Is this your first spring here?
