Rant. To the Jeep driver at 3817 Admiral Way who seems to always park on the sidewalk (actually on 39th) despite having 20+ feet of empty driveway to use. A double Rant to SPD who never seem to follow up on the complaints. At least 2 elderly handicap live close by and either use a walker or a wheelchair and can’t get by the Jeep.

have you left a message on the windshield? i had a similar problem with an housing complex that never trimmed their blackberries and they were covering the sidewalk. i called their for rent sign, left a msg about how my service dog was going to be injured walking on their blackberries and they cleaned them up within a couple of days.

That’s my experience with the police: At public meetings they are Officer Friendly and tell you what the laws are and encourage you to call about parking problems but the reality is quite different. When one car was half-blocking my driveway, the police drove by and did nothing. When one car was completely blocking my driveway, the officer yelled at me! I got questions like, DO YOU USE YOUR DRIVEWAY? asked in a loud voice 3 times, with people standing by watching, before she finally ticketed the car.

    Carson..

    leave them a note…

    a nice note

put it in a zip lock baggie if it is raining.

calling the authorities first is not the way to get someone to do what you want…

    dhg..

i’m guessing your driveway didn’t look like it was in use by the repeated questioning…

most municipalities train their officers to stay out of neighborhood disputes because they tend to escalate…

Sorry, but I disagree. It doesn’t MATTER whether the homeowner uses the driveway, blocking it is an infraction. It’s SPD’s job to leave a “note”.

While I might forgive a car (or Jeep) parked in a low traffic (foot traffic) area once in a while, this Jeep was parked in a very high traffic area and is there several times a week. I will keep calling SPD until either they get sick of me and ticket the vehicle or, unlikely, the vehicle owner gets a hint.

I’m with KBear. No, I’m not going to “leave a note” if you park illegally like a self-entitled ass. I’m going to call the non-emergency number and report it. In my experience, the person who answers has been friendly and thanked me for reporting the infraction. Most recently, a couple months back, it was a car I watched park on Cal. outside Zeek’s – at the end of the block in a non-spot, blocking half the crosswalk and the entire curb cut. It pissed me off, because not only was she parked way too close to the intersection, but she was impeding anyone who might need to cross California in a wheelchair or walker. No, I’m not going to leave a note for that, I’m going to call the police and request they cite the car’s owner.

    Sarah..

i agree when it comes to parking infractions on main thoroughfares…

but if the person parking illegally is a neighbor..

it certainly isn’t going to improve your relationship to send the cops after them…

escalation of that kind of neighborhood dispute can get pretty nasty…

    and downright dangerous for you.

if a note fails, then by all means take the next step. but try the note first.

While I certainly don’t appreciate people who think they can park anywhere they want, I’m not a fan of calling the police to ticket people when most of the time the situation can be resolved by good old fashioned face to face interaction (or by note, in this case). While by all standards this person is in the wrong for parking like an idiot and are deserving to be ticketed for the infraction, you’ll probably have a lot more luck with a personal message rather than waiting to see if the police show up in time to ticket them (if they show up at all).

Considering the WSB’s rule for posting reviews for businesses and having to bring the attention to the owner/manager before going on rants, we should consider having to confront the issue before our complaints are logged.

Unless the person who drives the vehicles seems to be threatening, leave a note. If that doesn’t work, then take further steps.

Yes, if it’s a neighbor, I’d probably say something to them or leave a note. The first couple of times. If it’s a car I don’t recognize, I am not going to waste my time trying to figure out who it is. I’m going to call Parking Enforcement.

They are not a neighbor, they are 2 blocks away from me. I don’t know them at all, but I do know they constantly park on the sidewalk, they never bring their garbage cans in and they do nothing to upkeep their house or even pick up trash on their property. Call me jaded, but I don’t think they care at all. I called SPD and will call every single time. Next time you drive down Admiral check the house out, then you might feel a little different.

    Carson…

i still would leave notes before calling the police…

if that fails.. then you end up with no choice but calling the police… and in your case.. maybe you need not worry that they know where you live…

but.. it does seem like you have a much larger issue with these folks than just that where they park.

there is a fine line between reporting offenders and harassment…

i am always reminded of the parable about people in glass houses throwing stones… seems like a good idea at the time.. but the consequences can be a real B ;0

I don’t care how they keep their yard, it was a simple point that they don’t seem to care. The only issue is the parking, and I know the easiest solution to fix it, and I did and will continue to do so. Gee, harassement???

I guess I’m missing the part where calling the police vs leaving a note is dangerous for the complaining party? I mean, either way is pretty anonymous, right? Do the police require you to give your name/address when you make such complaints?

@Carson…I know the house you’re referring to. They did, in response to a city complaint, cut back the huge hedge along Admiral that was encroaching on the sidewalk. The owner doesn’t live in that house, but it seems complaints to the city does lead him to act.

When you call you eventually get to non-priority 911. They only ask for your name and phone, not your address. It took about 2 minutes to wade thru the prompts and wait. It seems like it might be renters, all young males, more than a few alcohol bottles around.

how about a note that tells them why you would like them to move the vehicle and a “by the way, parking enforcement has been notified.”?

So go home, in the rain, write a note, walk back in the rain, leave the note, walk home? No. If you have 20+ feet of empty driveway and STILL park on the sidewalk, you deserve the ticket.

    I’m with you, Carson.

And whenever I see a cop or parking enforcement officer working in that kind of weather, I think, “You made them get out of the car in the rain. You are SO getting a ticket!”

Carson, it seems you have dedicated a substantial amount of time to repeatedly calling the SPD to report a parking infraction (they must LOVE you by now), fixating over the unkempt appearance of the offending house, and reading and responding to the comments on this forum.

Just wondering if it might be more productive for you to go over to the young males’ house (yes, possibly in the rain) and simply ask them to move their car off the sidewalk? You might even ask them to mow the lawn if you are feeling adventurous! This is just a bit too much Seattle passive aggressiveness for my liking.

By the way, I love the fact that “young males” must be renting the house because there are alcohol bottles on the property. Darn kids!!

MSfan. It takes me about 2 minutes to call SPD, it would take me about 5 minutes to walk there and back. I am by no means “fixated” be their mess, just pointing out the obvious. Like the young men I see hanging out there and the booze bottles. It has nothing to do with being passive agressive but more to do with whats easiest for me.

Calling Parking Enforcement is not “harassment”, JoB, nor is it “passive-agressive”, msfan. Parking on the sidewalk is illegal and a public nuisance. We pay taxes for Parking Enforcement. It’s their job to come out and issue a ticket. If they get annoyed by multiple calls, too bad. They should come out and do their job.
