ghar72ParticipantSouthwest Library isn’t cutting it. Anyone know a place that is truly quiet? Are other libraries quieter? Had hopes for SSCC library, but turns out they’re closed on the weekends. Miss the days of being at college and the absolute silence of the library. And I’m not picking on the public library system and the noise (which isn’t extreme or anything); I just need some silence to concentrate and I can’t get that at home with two young ones. Thanks for any tips!

Talaki34ParticipantDo you need access to a computer to study?

ghar72ParticipantI have a laptop and so if there’s WiFi, that would be great, but not necessary. I’d probably do better without it b/c of the distraction.

Rod ClarkMemberSome newer types of earplugs are more comfortable, and might be enough to let you stay home or study at the Southwest Branch. Or a pair of cushy around-the-ear headphones might be enough, maybe in addition to the plugs. Some people use white noise generators. Presumably they make better, more polite, more accurate, less distorted, more soothing, less aggravating noise than tuning a TV to an unused channel.

ghar72ParticipantThanks for the tip, Rod. Might have to go that route.

mehud7ParticipantThe Burien Library is open until 8pm on Sundays. While the main library isn’t always quiet, they do have a quiet room at the north end of the 2nd floor.

ghar72ParticipantOh, thanks, Mehud! I’ve never been to the Burien library, but will be sure to check it out now. Quiet room, exactly what I need!

minionMemberI liked DubSea Coffee for studying. Headphones will definitely help too. I also have seen a lot of people studying at the Barnes and Noble Cafe at Westwood, I don’t know if it is actually quiet.

HmmmMemberI just discovered a half dozen really quiet study carrels in the West Seattle Library beside the Non Fiction shelves – along the northeast wall. Had no idea they were tucked in back there!

ellenpParticipantI have a huuuge problem concentrating when studying. I second the headphones, plus I downloaded a tiny app for my laptop call aire freshener. There is a large selection of white noise it can play. I like the ocean wave sounds with little birdies. It’s perfect for drowning out distracting background noise.
If you do download it, be sure to virus-scan it before you install it, cuz ye never know.

ghar72ParticipantThanks everyone for all the great ideas! I’m going to check out those study carrels at WS Library. If all else fails, I’ll be going for the earbud/noise cancellation route.
Study on!
