kParticipantWe are seeking someone to do a one time trim of some bushes in our yard. Just a “clean up” before Fall. Can anyone recommend someone? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

He did some cleanup and shrub removal for us and did a great job, quickly. His true talent is in design and install of landscape (both hardscape and plants) but he is new in town and making connections, so smaller jobs are ok, it seems.
After a number of flaky landscapers, he was a breath of fresh air. Showed up when promised (to the minute) and worked efficiently even when we weren’t home. Others disappear when/if we’re not there, and don’t show up at all half the time.

sacatoshParticipantDreamscapes blew us away in a good way, at first. They showed up on time and Jake brought 3 guys with him to do a big cleanup job in our yard. He removed a few plants I wanted to keep, but promised bigger and better plants in their place. When he left, the yard looked GREAT! New compost laid down, everything tidy.
A few weeks later, I noticed that the guy who showed up for an hour (in swim trunks and no shirt, flip flops on his feet) was scraping the tops off weeds with a hoe, not actually removing them by the root. Guess what – the weeds came back. And then didn’t get pulled for weeks. Finally, another “big cleanup” and the yard looked neat and tidy again. We continued to use Jake for another two months, though the bills were quite a bit higher than the quote of $36/week and $50/month of “plant co-op” in which he was supposed to bring 7-8 new plants a month. I gave him another chance to wow me, assuming it was just one of his workers who was slacking.
Unfortunately, after about two months, Jake no-showed on us for 6 weeks straight, and billed us over $500 in that time. I sent multiple emails, and finally he responded and said he was “saving up” work to all be done at once (but pre-billing for it???) He showed up a week later than promised and did 4 hours of work – 2 hours with 2 people – and then stopped showing up again. I finally had to fire him. He never did respond to the firing, other than to continue not showing up.
I would not hire him again, but if you do, I’d highly recommend reading all the Yelp reviews and making his schedule very clear and putting it in writing with specific days, # hours expected, etc, if you’re going to work with him.
When he does bother to show up, he does a passable job; he’s just totally unreliable.
(note: this is a copy of my Yelp review. You’ll see I did complain to Jake multiple times, with the only resolution being to fire him after 6 weeks of no-shows.)

BreezyParticipantWe have just hired the crew from Essential Gardeners to do a large one-time clean up as well as some regularly scheduled assistance in our garden. Very positive interaction on the phone, via email, and excellent in person meeting with Lisa, one of their leads. Incredible plant knowledge…the clean up is scheduled for next week..I’ll report back here with the results!

sacatoshParticipantI wish those commenters who are “recommending” themselves or their families would identify themselves as such, per the posted rules. I see at least 2 or 3 above.

BreezyParticipantGood catch, sacatosh. Not only against the rules, but a bit unethical perhaps….

littlepickleMemberBreezy, did you end up having a good experience with Essential Gardeners? Also, were they expensive? I am also looking for someone to help me with my yard.
October 20, 2013 at 6:18 am #797605
BreezyParticipantGood thing I looked back at this…forgot I was supposed to review..Yes, they did an awesome job. Lisa, the lead gardener, was joined by 2 other workers. On time arrival, worked hard and quickly. Were extremely thorough. I can’t speak for whether they were expensive or not. I hired this company because of their education. The KNOW plants and I have a highly landscaped yard with many, many varieties of plants and trees. They will come out and do a walk-through, giving you an estimate for the work you want done. I do a lot of my own work, but they will be back to help me manage the work.

HawkeyeParticipantI’ve worked several times with Manuel (206-290-7899) to keep my massive laurel hedges trimmed, as well as build a small retaining wall and put in a paver walkway and I’ve been happy every time. He’s very experienced, his work ethic is terrific, shows up when he says, rates are reasonable, his crew is without fail polite and hardworking and he’ll gladly take the time to answer any questions.
