wow, way to live up to all the stereotypes!! When I was YOUR age West Seattle didn’t SUCK so much because we only had GOOD people living here and the OUTSIDERS were kept in the ghettos where they belong!

“I AM A SNOB (about my town) and I AM entitled to my opinion”

Glad you realize it’s your opinion and not actually reality.

Ivar – criminals from White Center? Gee, funny that we aren’t having the reports of crime like you guys are and we live 2 blocks from there.

Another example of the racism and bigotry aimed at White Center and environs.

thanks JT…I have quite a few friends my age who are natives and would never think as these two have. Funny how some people think of themselves…I’m older than them, and would never, ever think that I was a “codgerette” ;-). Guess it’s all in the mind, huh….

    back to bbq…

i stopped by berry’t tonight. it didn’t smell like much from the street.. but the minute you step inside you know you are in a rib joint… a kansas city style rib joint with southern fixings thrown in…

we had ribs and pork and chowder and potato salad and beans and corn bread.

as good as the food was.. and it was good… talking with berry was better…

Wow — YAY for all of us in Highland Park! We bought our house here a little over a year ago and we love it. I had no idea there were so many of us on here!

And I jogged by the “Deli” this morning… there was actually someone walking out eating a sandwhich, so to each their own.

But I won’t be going there. Ever.

I think it’s worth stating again that they may do more business in the hood if they cleaned up and looked like something other than a bomb shelter.

Well Michelled, It’s too bad that you can judge that store so harshly by the look of the store. The people running that store are great people and I have been going there for years and will continue to go as long as I am in the area.

If you think that the look of a corner store affects the Highland community negitively, your wrong. It is the people that make the community and if you continue to hate on hard working people and not supporting them then this community will cease to grow.

ThunderStorm – I am sure the people who run the store are great. I’m not judging them. I’m only judging the look of the store, which for all intensive purposes is not nice. No one said they weren’t hard working.

I’m not hating on anyone, just saying that it would be nice if they cleaned it up. It would help their business and the community.

And I would say that it gives a negative impression. All of the neighbors living on my part of the street agree. But saying that is not the same thing as saying anything about the people running it. It’s the same when a house on your street is not taken care of. It just detracts from the appeal of the area.

I’m not saying I’m rooting for them to fail or that they’re not working as hard as the next person, or even that you shouldn’t go there. Just saying that I won’t be.

It’s about the smoked deliciousness of the pig, people! Can’t we get over this provincialism and focus on the ever-lovin’ smoke/pork/sauce combo the way that lil’ baby jesus wants us to? As for the looks of the joint, think of it as a theme restaurant, sorta like olive garden… but different.

I’m not provincial. And, still, I’m not stepping one foot in that building to spend one penny of my money there.

Even if the food is tasty, that is not enough for me. I support restaurants and other businesses for a myriad of reasons. My assessment and experience is that this business does NOT meet my standards.

However, the whole neighborhood and all of West Seattle is absolutely free to spend THEIR money there. I just am not buying in. I have other choices. Choice is good.

Also, Jesus could have been a vegetarian, ya’ know. I’ve heard rumors.

drove by today thinking maybe i would stop for lunch…

a foot in the door was followed with a foot out…

it would have had to smell pretty good and looked really clean to get me further…. it didn’t.

Thunderstorm – I’m curious. If you know the people that own the store so well, tell me why they have refused most attempts by the Highland Park Assoc. to help them clean up the outside of the business area to make it a more attractive part of the neighborhood? I realize they don’t have to, but doesn’t it make good business sense, especially if their closest potential customers would frequent more often?

On the other hand Thee – I have traveled to many spots in the world, especially markets in 3rd world countries where the smell could turn your stomach. But some of those “horrible looking” markets contain some of the best culinary jewels that I’ve found in my lifetime and it was worth the risk. So I think I’ll take the plunge this weekend and see for myself.

As was pointed out on another thread, food poisoning/bad food can happen in any restaurant or store anywhere, irregardless of aesthetic appearance. Haven’t heard any reports of people getting sick, so live on the wild side for a change:)
