feefeelarueMemberHi everyone … My daughter and I have just moved here and I was wondering what there is to do that is fun with an 8 year old? … I haven’t been able to get out and do much exploring yet on my own but, from what I’ve seen it seems just completely awesome here .. I’m a former NY’er and so glad to be back in the city =)any reccommendations would be appreciated!! Thanks

WSBKeymasterOur son’s a few years past that but memories are fresh, and we’ve been here since before he was born.
*Ferry ride from Fauntleroy dock
*Every beach (Lincoln Park, Lowman Beach, Alki Beach)
*Water Taxi ride from Seacrest pier after the season starts again on April 5th
*All sorts of incredible activities at the local community centers – art, sports, you name it (the “combined brochure” for all West Seattle community centers is here:
http://www.seattle.gov/PARKS/centers/Alki/Spring09.pdf
)
*Explore Camp Long and its hiking trails
*Rent a cabin at Camp Long
*Go to an environmental education program at Camp Long
*Swim at Southwest Pool (West Seattle’s only indoor pool)
*Swim at Colman Pool when its season opens in late May
*Culture in The Junction — Twilight Artist Collective next to Easy Street — ArtsWest has a gallery in its lobby — many other local businesses display art
*Playgrounds at Whale Tail Park (Alki), Alki Elementary, Ercolini Park (West of The Junction), Lincoln Park
*Pinball and ice cream at Full Tilt (White Center but that’s not far)
just a few that come to mind.
Welcome!

AnonymousInactiveDon’t forget breakfast at Easy Street!!! It’s the most important meal of the day and everyone needs a new CD.

BonnieParticipantwhat about bowling at WS Bowl on a rainy day?
March 24, 2009 at 4:18 am #661567
AnonymousInactiveTotally.
Also, going to get lunch from the Westwood Village McDonalds since they’re a corporate store and have better deals than the franchise on California. Same product, just different pricing.
March 24, 2009 at 4:32 am #661568
BonnieParticipantThe McDonald’s on California (the Morgan Junction area one) doesn’t accept the coupons that are out once in awhile. At least they didn’t last time I tried to use one.

ps .. any good Chinese food that delivers here?
March 24, 2009 at 6:20 am #661570
WSBKeymasterHo-Win delivers. Haven’t eaten there in FOREVER so I’ll leave the reviews to others.
Thanks for the kind words. The people who collaborate with us – those you’ve been seeing here in the Forums, and thousands more – are what makes it rock.

Garden_nymphMemberLee’s Restaurant on California in the Junction. (I don’t know if they deliver since we either eat there or call for an order to go.)

WSMemberAnother East Coast transplant here and sadly, you won’t find good chinese delivery like you do there. The best chinese I have found is Snappy Dragon in Maple Leaf.
Asd far as other activities if you are looking for camps the YMCA summer camps are simply incredible and the Boat House on Alki does summer art camps as well.

RainyDay1235MemberGood idea to pick up a copy of the book “West Seattle 101” – lots of ideas of things to do (some seasonal so the dates help) and lots of kids stuff….there is a tab at the top that explains it more (WS101). Welcome! :)
March 24, 2009 at 5:20 pm #661574
JoBParticipantthere is also a book at Barnes and Noble that showcases “weird” stuff in Washington.
kids love weird…

EmmyJaneParticipantI’m going to throw out some great restaurants in West Seattle you need to try: La Rustica (fancy), Elliot Bay Brewery (kid friendly), Talaricos (adult bar with great pizza), Bakery Nouveau and Endolyn Joes (great breakfast.) Matador has great Mexican but not kid friendly.

AdamOnAlkiParticipantMission. Take your kid to Mission. Great Margaritas.

villagegreenMemberLuna Park down on Avalon is the holy grail if you’re looking for a kid friendly 50’s maltshop-like dining experience. Be forewarned, the kids practically outnumber the adults.
March 24, 2009 at 6:34 pm #661578
AnonymousInactiveBe sure to take quarters to Luna Park because they have a jukeboxes at the booths with all kinds of great songs like:
– Elvis Presley: Suspicious Minds (greatest Elvis song EVER)
– Roy Orbison: Pretty Woman
– Johnny Cash: Walk the Line
– Dusty Springfield: Son of a Preacher Man
– Van Halen: Tora! Tora! Tora!
– MC Hammer: Can’t Touch This
– NKOTB: The Right Stuff
– Flo-Rida: Low
They have great oatmeal as well!
