Mr. Transplantella had an eye exam yesterday and will be needing to buy new eyeglasses. He had the exam at a ritzy optometrist downtown, the exam was fully covered by his insurance but the glasses are not.The optometrist office showed him a bunch of high end frames and including the lenses, their estimated cost for his new glasses was $950. :>(

    Yeah, we can’t afford that……

So I’m looking for some recommendations for a good place to buy good quality eyeglasses with good service. The cost definitely needs to stay under $500.

    Good experiences? Recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

I got prescription elsewhere and glasses at Costco. They had a wide variety of frames (well, they had the purple ones I wanted :-) and the prices were reasonable. They don’t take VSP (don’t know about other insurance) so price WAS an object.

    Yup, we have VSP too.

So Costco is out I guess.

You can go to VSP website and search by zipcode. I know the one in Jefferson Square and Westwood take VSP. I got a pair at Westwood that was within their “allowed amount” for frames.

I know there are those that could disagree, but I like West Seattle Optix in West Seattle; have always had good service; and used our VSP.

I like West Seattle Optix too — they didn’t have any frames I liked last time but I’m going for eye exam Saturday. (I picked them originally because they were open on Saturday.)

I have gotten more compliments on the glasses I got last fall then all the glasses I’ve had since 1970. The RayBan sunglasses frames are also real popular. the lens are good and the adjustments were dead on. My insurance plan has very limited support but I can’t believe how much I like getting my glasses at….wait for it…Sears. Never would have thought it! Just spent this years insurance $’s there too. You can get any frame and lens right now for 199.

Husband and I both wear glasses and are fans of Davis Optical in the U. District. While we do have pretty good vision coverage, I’ve been in a position where I wasn’t insured and needed a check-up and new specs. They have some excellent staff, a fast turn-around time, a range of frames ($99 and up) and nice follow-up/aftercare.

Or, if you want to go another route (though I’ve yet to do this, since I really need to try frames on first), there’s also Zenni Optical. I know a handful of people who have purchased through them and were quite pleased.

transplantella, do yourself a favor and check out this article : http://www.slate.com/id/2198746/

A buddy of mine ordered 2 pairs online for a little less than $50! He’s been very happy with both of them.

I still haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but intend to do so this weekend.

2nd Zenni! Very happy with them. I printed out my email invoice and sent that to insurance co. No hassle, great selection and great glasses. Adding.. I am unable to afford anything @ WS Optix, where I had my exam, even with insurance, but I did find an affordable pair at Paris Miki in Uwajimaya if you do not want to go the online route.

Believe it or not, America’s Best down in Southcenter. Two pair for $69, and that includes the eye exam (which it sounds like you don’t need.)

They do not take insurance, but even considering that, they were 30% of what I paid at the place in Westwood Village, and I got two pair not one. I get compliments on them all the time, and they’re cheap enough that you can get trendier styles and switch them up once a year. Or get a pair of sunglasses and a pair of regular glasses.

I had to get high index glasses, and they were very honest about just how high is reasonable and where the cutoff was where I’d be paying a lot more for less benefit. Including scratch coating and very high index lenses, my two pairs were $120 out the door.

I’ll be trying mail order next.
